Re: Talking Baseball Players
Eliot said April is the cruelest month, but for baseball fans it's February. Here are guys I've been kicking around in my head. Last year I said he was a wasted pick in the first round and everybody said, "he's so safe." Man there's no such thing as safe. But this year he's a little more interesting...

Re: Talking Baseball Players
ok. good thread. thoughts on the 2 rd spread between Pollock and Blackmon? Hell, Betts, Marte, and Blackmon? food for thought i feel anyone else pulls a 17-43 season on the back of a 19-28 season would be thought of more highly. It's a good point about Blackmon. The market place is all about subtle...

He's always reminded me of Venus Williams to Justin's Serena. Whippet fast, mercurial, quietier, a slight air of mystery about him. The older brother. Justin the younger more brash, bigger in size and personality.

Re: A Rough in the Diamond
Hey Dan. Always appreciate hearing about stuff like this. My .02 cents. I'm all in favor of trying to game the system. There's money to be made by betting the show. Or maybe the place. I think there's a better punting strategy than this one. Punt saves. In 2011, the auction championship was won a gu...

Re: Sometimes, We Just Wanna Cry....
What do you do when you don't want to cry? My NFBC satellite team currently has the following pitching stats:
2.43 ERA
27 Wins
1.019 Whip
354 Ks
18 saves
It's going to be terrible to watch the regression.

Not Eddie Murray, jeez. Ahhhhhhhhhh.......finally came to me. Frank Thomas. Jeez, tough one. Very tough. By the way, didn't Juan Gonzales win back to back one time as well? Juan Gon won 2 in 3 years but not back to back. Had to look it up. It was a tough one but to me that's what makes a good trivi...

Re: Regression and Depression
Doesn't this also apply to the good? Does it always have to be bad? What about the guy that is under performing? The regression to the mean is based off of other peripheral numbers that indicate better things to come. Does this not suggest a regression to the upside? Yes it sure does. I would add t...

Glenn you did really well. It is Yogi. Morgan and Banks are right. Schmidt yes, Bonds and Maris and Murphy too. There are actually 3 at first base. You got one in Fat Albert 2008-2009. Mantle did actually go back to back in 56-57. Jimmy Foxx is another one of the first basemen. The other 1st baseman...

That's terrific stuff, Dan and Wayne. Dan, I think that you probably are real good at baseball trivia with your knowledge of the history of the game. It's not your fault most people do trivia wrong. Who led the NL in triples in 1996? That kind of thing is no fun. You either have it memorized or you ...

Solid Dan. Ichiro. As a side note he is also the current answer to the question who is the last player to win RoY and MVP in that same season. We all know the one before that, right? Wills is right of course. The other reason I wanted to hit you with this. I read your excellent WIlls stuff. Mickey C...

Heya Dan. You like baseball trivia? Hard to imagine you don't. I saw where the Indians signed a guy named Josh Judy. Unfortunately he's a pitcher so he can't be a true "Judy". Anyway, it inspired this question: Who was the last non-pitcher to win an MVP in a season in which he hit fewer than 10 home...

Re: End of Week Two Stuff
Hit a batter and it doesn't count against your WHIP. What genius thought that one up? I started playing back in '84 when the original rotissarie baseball book came out (fantastic book in so many ways). Back then we used to have to get the Sporting News through the U.S. mail in order to keep stats. ...

Re: End of Week Two Stuff
A team error can also be used on a fielder's choice, Steve. It would encompass some 'mental' mistakes which some fielder's choices are. In this case, the runner had already achieved second base when the errant throw allowed him another base. The error becomes irrelelevant in terms of earned runs as...

Re: End of Week Two Stuff
Thus, on a routine play in which someone should've been out, no out was recorded and all runs in the innings were earned because of it. It must not have been a routine play, otherwise the scorer would have simply awarded an error. When that is called it's usually because a player makes and ill-advi...

One more note by the way...Felix has thrown more innings than Verlander over the last 3 years. The King throws a pitch I don't think anybody else throws. They call it a two seam. Mark Ellis, the A's very fine 2nd baseman now with the Dodgers, used to say it was a circle change thrown hard. It has th...

Unlike you, I have not nostalgia for Saturday, when the games didn't count. Baseball...can't get enough. Co-worker came up to my desk after Kershaw homered and asked me who held the record for most home runs by a pitcher. I said Spahn. He's 3rd. I thought that was pretty good. Number 1 is Wes Farrel...

Re: 'Stuck in the Middle With You' & Missouri/Missouri 2013
Dough...one of the strange things about this game is that we watch these players from a distance and we try to understand them. I was on Ian Desmond last year because I read that he'd had a kid and was happy. It popped up in a couple different interviews and I got interested and I bought in. I remem...

Re: Spawned, Spammed, and Special
I'm trying to think, who in baseball is the anti-Swisher? The most selfish, or surly? The guy who just gives off bad vibes even in interviews when trying to be 'on his best behavior'. Of course, this would be guess work. We don't really know these players. But for me, some who put off that air of a...

Re: Spawned, Spammed, and Special
One other side note about Swisher. He's a surprisingly good first baseman. Good hands. Average at least footwork. Good stretch and good instincts. Always thought he was a better 1st baseman than an outfielder.

Re: Spawned, Spammed, and Special
You know who I like to watch play is Swisher. Not so much his play but what he's doing when he's not playing. Guy likes to have fun. It should be fun. He's mugging for the camera. Always talking to the guys on his team. Doesn't seem like he would ever like to be anywhere else. He's been a part of so...
