Re: DL spots
I have been playing fantasy baseball in some form or another for 30 years. I’ve had my share of success and also had more dismal seasons than I care to remember. Throughout all those years, I had always refused to use injuries as an excuse. Injuries are unfortunate, but they’re part of the game. The...

Re: Pace of live Main Event drafts
The number of draft sheets does reach epidemic proportions for some people. ... There's absolutely no reason you can't have one sheet with Infielders, one sheet with Outfielders, one sheet with Catchers & Utilities, one with Starting Pitchers and one with Relievers -- 5 sheets max, and even that I ...

Re: Pace of live Main Event drafts
[\quote] I find that when I do all of the things you are doing at the table and I used to by the way... is that it is like spending too much time on administrative tasks on my job and not enough on strategy. I would ask why do you need to track everyone's team by paper. Scratching out names off your...

Re: Pace of live Main Event drafts
Not trying to be all Gekko here... I love Mark for the record. If I am sensing that you are taking your time and do better at a slower pace why would I not try to do the exact opposite to you especially if we are on an end together and your picks can have an even larger impact on my draft? These pe...

Pace of live Main Event drafts
There was a comment posted on our league's message board which alluded to the pace of our draft. Since I have also been thinking about this, I decided to open a thread on the overall boards. As has been the case before, the pace of my main event draft this year was very sporadic. There would be a se...

Re: Impact of Closers
I'm not even thinking the solution is to add holds to the menu. How about just eliminating say Saves and Runs scored as categories? Just roll with 4 each! I simply interpreted this suggestion as facetious, made by an owner who is frustrated over how the saves category has gone for him this season. ...

Re: Lester
Lester is a very good - but not great - pitcher in my opinion. I think the Cubs way overpaid for him, but he will get better and be solid (but not elite) for them. Mike I concur with this assessment. As a Red Sox fan I appreciate Lester's contributions to two championship clubs. He's a gamer and he...

I am the proud owner of both Mat Latos and Steve Cishek. Cancelled out great performances the prior day from Johnny Cueto and Sonny Gray. The glass half-full outlook? At least these guys were pitching against the weakest hitting lineup in the league. Imagine how much worse it would have been against...

Re: On Fire!
My team batting average is .185, supplemented with a striking absence of power and speed. As such, a 1-for-5 with nothing across performance shows up as "on fire".

Re: 1st auction team how did we do....
I think you did pretty well with this squad. As someone else already observed, my big concern is your outfield. I keep expecting Father Time to catch up with Torii Hunter and you really can't afford to have that happen. I don't see Andre Ethier being much help, but I think you may have a solid repla...

Re: Between a rock and a hard place in NYC?
Stephen, Funny thing about that sixth round. I took Jason Heyward and you followed with Matt Cain. I was torn between taking Heyward or Cain with that pick. I decided on Heyward with the (slim) hope that Cain had a better chance of getting back to me in round seven. It turns out, neither one of them...

Re: Between a rock and a hard place in NYC?
I should also mention that our facilitators in NY 4 did a terrific job. The projected grid is impossible to see from a distance, other than the first few seconds when the pick is displayed. They ensured made sure we all could hear each selection as it was made. Thumbs up!

Between a rock and a hard place in NYC?
Today I made my annual sojourn into New York City to partake in the NFBC main event. I had the #8 pick in NY League 4. Fifteen minutes before the start of the draft, Tom Kessenich addressed the group. He singled out the two former champions in the room, Stephen Jupinka and Artie Rastelli. Each stood...

Eleven straight main events for me as well, all of them in New York City. I wasn't sure whether it would be a one shot thing for me back in 2004, but it's been a blast. After some initial success, I have been donating to the winner's pot for many years now. Each season I am convinced that trend is g...

It's very reassuring to read this positive report on Matt Harrison's condition. Otherwise I would have had to scramble to figure out who my first round pick will be in the main event!

Re: Potential fallout of Biogensis probe?
I truly hope that the players are strongly behind the effort to clean up the game. It will be very interesting to see what happens when and if these anticipated suspensions come down. I expect the union to fight the suspensions because historically that's what it has always done.

Potential fallout of Biogensis probe?
Much of the discussion in this forum has understandably centered around the impact that PED suspensions would have upon our NFBC squads. I find myself thinking along different lines, however. I'm concerned about the potential ramifications that such suspensions could have on the labor situation. Sin...

Jim Johnson blew another save tonight. That gives him blown saves in each of his last three outings. Friday he was torched for 5 runs. As if I needed any more tires to blow out on my sorry team. :x I picked up Darren O'Day on Sunday in the event that Johnson's troubles lead to either the DL or a dem...

Re: Free Agents and FAAB
If the likes of a Nolan Arenado was available, but I didn't have a real need, I would still place a bid. I'd probably go something like 50-60 FAAB. If I get him at that price, great. If not, that's OK too. At least I am guaranteeing that no one else gets him for a bargain basement price.

Re: $$$ Jose Valverde $$$
I'm one of the crazies who went all-in on Jose Valverde, investing $489. I wrestled with this decision all week. I knew I was going to place a large bid on Valverde, but large could have been $250 as opposed to nearly 500. The runner-up bid in my league was $408, so I needed the high bid to get him....

Re: $$$ Jose Fernandez $$$
Jose Fernandez went for $428 in NY2 with runner-up bid of $427. Too rich from my perspective. I bid in the low 100's. There have been lots of comparisons to Dwight Gooden, but I see big differences. Gooden pitched back when no one was concerned about pitch counts or innings limits. Fernandez looks l...

Re: Notes to Players
John Buck, I just want to reiterate our understanding that you are a mere seat-warmer both in fantasy and in reality. Once Travis D'Arnaud is 'ready', you're on the Mets' bench. Once Carlos Ruiz returns from suspension, you're waiver wire material in NFBC NY 2. This homerun-a-day kick you're on isn'...

Justin Upton is off to quite a start. I'd say he's surpassed John Buck and Carlos Marmol in the early NL MVP race!
