no more coin tosses

how about this?

no more OT for tied games in the NFL. we're going to call it "extended play". if a game is tied when the clock runs out, the game simply continues on. the clock can be turned off or add minutes and seconds just to track time. everybody understands the situation entering the fourth quarter and can coach/play accordingly. when the point comes to where the game is being extended, a team is allowed only one timeout per possession. the timeouts cannot accumulate, you get one per possession.

i am not for or against the present system, but this concept keeps the game rolling without a coin flip playing into the result.

instead of a team attempting a 60 yard FG with time running out, they would/could opt to punt and pin the opposing team down and play the field position game, in hopes of getting a better chance to score later.

just a thought.

I like it. I don't think the NFL would.

It would eliminate drama if a team is out of time outs and driving down the field with the game tied.

Most fans probably would not embrace it either. It would be hard to explain that the 60 minute clock doesen't mean anything when it's a tie.

It sounds good to me though. Like the Indy-SD game, it seems the first team with the ball has an advantage in the current system.

If I recall correctly...there is very close to 50-50 chance the coin toss winner wins in the history of NFL overtime. At most it's 59-41.

That's why defense wins championships!!! ;)

Ahhh, what the heck...this could be true...

The NFL has had 325 overtime games since the rule was adopted in

1974. The results:

Both teams have had possession 235 times (72.3%).

The team that has won the toss has won 169 times (52.0%).

The team that has lost the toss has won 141 times (43.4%).

223 games were decided by a field goal (68.6%).

86 games were decided by a TD (26.5%).

One game was decided by a safety (0.3%).

There have been 15 ties (4.6%).

~Lance Great digging for the stats Lance. As you know, I hate the current NFL overtime rule as I don't think it's fair at all. I like college football's concept and would do this in the NFL, starting both teams at their own 40-yard-lines to give the defenses a say in this.

Glad to see this discussion even on the baseball boards.
