Electronic Equipment Rule

Post by JohnP » Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:02 pm

Per the rules: "Electronic Equipment: Participants can use electronic equipment during the draft as long as it fits in the allotted draft spot at the table. There will be NO Internet connections or electrical outlets, so participants bringing laptops will have to supply their own power. Cell phones are allowed at the draft table, but we encourage participants to use them sparingly and not in a way that interrupts the draft process. We request that participants limit their usage to outgoing calls during the draft, not incoming calls, and anyone planning to remain on the phone for the entire draft needs to inform the NFBC about that ahead of time."

Can we change / amend this rule? It just seems like the whole "can't plug in thing" creates more problems then it is worth. Why not just let whomever plug in if outlets are available? Some of these overall competitions have leagues that are "online" leagues and of course they have plug-ins, internet, etc. Additionally, some of the leagues are a combo of live and "online" and do you really think that the "online" piece unplugs their computers? Just a silly rule. If I go to a live draft and there is an outlet nearby, I expect to be able to plug into it. If there is only one nearby and the guy drafting next to me wants to plug in - no problem - we can share, we can have multi-plugs, etc. If there is none available - I get that too. I imagine the intent is to create a "level" playing field when it comes to electronics. That went away with the online participation. Also...what does "no internet connections mean" - one can't use a wireless internet card? One can't be looking up info on their smart phone? I am sure this all isn't that important in the big scheme of things - just saw a "rule" forum earlier and it made me think of this one. Just my two cents. Thanks.

John, I'm pretty sure that no internet means that they will not provide it as a service for the draft. The hotel may or may not have wifi. So if you bring your own by all means use it. It's been done for years.

The no electrical outlets means that they're not readily available where you sit. They're not guaranteeing that they will have outlets for every individual. Just not feasible. If you find an outlet somewhere I'm sure you can use it. There are usually many in a conference room in various spots. To play it safe maybe bring a power strip. ;) Didn't hear it from me !
