Post by Winston's Empire » Thu May 24, 2012 8:58 am

Any Guesses how many Dollars / Years Cole Hamels gets next year on the open market?
Honestly, this guy is going to get paid like nobodies business and when the bidding starts its going to get nuts.

Here is your Top 10 to date:

No. Player/Team Salary
1. SP/LH Johan Santana, Mets $24,000,000
2. SP/LH CC Sabathia, Yankees $23,000,000
3. SP/LH Cliff Lee, Phillies $21,500,000
4. SP/RH Roy Halladay, Phillies $20,000,000
5. SP/RH Justin Verlander, Tigers $20,000,000
6. SP/LH Barry Zito, Giants $19,000,000
7. SP/RH Felix Hernandez, Mariners $18,500,000
8. SP/RH Tim Lincecum, Giants $18,000,000
8. SP/RH Carlos Zambrano, Marlins $18,000,000
10. SP/RH Jake Peavy, White Sox $17,000,000

Zito, Santana, Zambrano and AJ Burnett (#11 at $16.5m) are real bargains. Four of the top six are left-handers.

Let's put the over/under at $22.5. I will take over.

Oh yeah, let's say the over/under is five years. I will take the over there too.

I will even go a step further and say that it will be between the Yankees and Red Sox. Dice-K will be off the books after this year and they will buyout Yuk at 1mil so plenty of money available. It's also become obvious that Lester and Beckett are good pitchers but can't be counted on as the staff ace.

He's not leaving Philly. 6 years with an AAV of 23.5m when you add in the 7th year option buyout.

Opening Day payroll for the 2012 Oakland A's: $53M.
Down over $10M fron 2011.

Johan Santana Salary for 2013: $25.5M

I'll go out on limb here and say that Johan and Cole will make more than the entire A's ballclub in 2013.

Cole gets 7 years, $190M

I agree with this guess the most. So many Top Pitchers have been locked up in the past 3 years, when he hits the market NYY and BOS are going to be playing hard and he is going to get paid, maybe a record amount. Pitching from the left side does not hurt his chances of a record payday either!!!

Some assume that the Yankees and Boston will be shelling out big bucks again. It's not a foregone conclusion.
Since the elder Steinbrenner passed away, money has not flowed as it once did.
Red Sox owner John Henry seemed to be more interested in his soccer team than his baseball team.
Both are weary (wary) of the Luxury Tax.
They may be players for players like Hamels, but it can't be seen as a sure thing any more.
Just my pair 'o Lincoln's....

Then again, what do I know? I had Westbrook pitching tonight...

Good points Dan. Last winter saw the AL East stand pat while some big names signed elsewhere, and that could well happen again this winter. I wouldn't rule out the Angels, Rangers or Cardinals in the Cole-A-Rama!

Hamels is a So Cal kid. I'll predict Magic reels in his first big fish to Dodger Blue for 6/150.

Would not shock me at all if the Dodgers jumped into the mix for Hamels and Dough is right about the Yankee's and BoSox slowing the spending train down!

Will be interesting, but I honestly think he is going to break some records!

MLB is littered with 100 million plus contracts that have not or are not working out and returning sound value the past 8 years.

Me thinks Hamels may get 100-110M tops- if he gets an arm problem this year- forget it.

Busts/Bad contracts

Arod 275m
Pujos 254M- lead anchor for the next 10 years, they think Wells contract is bad, they havent seen anything.
Santana 137M
Mauer 184M
Texiera 180M
AGonzo 154M
Crawford 142M
Helton 145M
Soriano 136M
Zito 126M
Wells 126M
Werth 126M
Hampton 125M
Giambi 120M
Bletran 119m
Kevin Brown 105m
Carlos Lee 100M

Recent contracts
Lee- 5- 125M - probaly doesnt work out
Howard 5- 125M - will be a bust
Reyes 106m - may work out
Holliday 120M - probaly ok
Votto- 10-225M - will be a bust 5-6 years out...
Fielder - 9 - 214M will be a bust 5-6 years out...too FAT
Sabathia - 7-161M - will be a bust in 2-3 years- too fat
Kemp -160M - May work out
Tulo 10- 157M - possibly good value barring injuury
Carbrera - 8-153M probaly works out
Cain - 6 - 127m - pitcher, heacy innign already - could fall off the map in 3 years
Zimmerman 9 -126M - Bad contract- never done anything

Good contracts- production was there
Jeter -189M
Manny 160M
Braun -150M - production will be there

I agree that Dodger Blue is the most likely out come right now. The new owners will want to make a splash, and what a beautiful couple...SOCal's own Cole and glamour girl Heidi.... A geographic match everyone might want.

Cole was PO'd a couple years ago by the Phillies lack of stepping up for him...so it is definately not automatic he wants to stay there.

There is no way he gets out of Philly.

The current GM obviously believes in pitching. You think he is letting the home grown, World Series MVP, youngest of the three aces, and best pitcher on the staff for the past two seasons get away?

If the Phils budget and luxury tax sitaution is an issue, the more likely scenario is another trade of Cliff Lee.

The biggest mistake the Phillies made was waiting...the Cain deal clearly reset the market. Not in terms of annual dollars, but moreso in terms of the length of the deal.

They aren't trading Lee again in the near future. He left money on the table to sign with the Phillies. If they deal him again, that looks pretty bad on the organization, and will no doubt impact future potential free agent signings. He also has a partial no-trade clause and not many teams can afford to take on that commitment.

Amaro has said they can afford three 20M+ pitchers in the rotation. Blanton is coming off the books and they have a potential buyout on Polanco. That said, they have to make a decision on Victorino and need to lock up Pence. Their farm system is pretty poor as well, so it will be interesting to see what happens going forward.
