Introducing NFBC Draft Slot Challenge For 2013

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Oct 30, 2012 2:25 pm

In 2013 we are going to offer a few optional side contests that hopefully will make your national contest teams even more meaningful. We will announce two of those side contests today and if all goes well we will have one more later on that is pretty unique. We're still seeing if we have time to build that one yet.

Basically, what we are offering are opt-in side contests that use your existing rosters for the three national events. You compete against other folks who also opt-in for these season-long or weekly contests and we pay out the top winners with an 85 percent payout. You will have the chance to sign up for these side contests when you first register or even after you draft. Let's look at the two side contests and take your questions after that.

Here's the first one, a season-long side contest for three separate contests:

NFBC Draft Slot Challenge

Three NFBC contests would offer this side contest with individual prizes for each draft slot in each contest:

NFBC Main Event
NFBC XII
NFBC Online Championship

Each would have separate Draft Slot Challenges for the 15 or 12 draft spots in each contest. Entry fees would be:

NFBC Main Event $100 per team
NFBC XII $50 per team
NFBC Online Championship $25 per team

Payouts in each contest would be 85% and prizes for each slot would be based on number of entries. Payouts will be 65% of prize money to 1st place, 25% to 2nd place and 10% to 3rd place through the first 25 entries. Payouts increase to Top 4 finishers and higher based on 25+ entries for any draft slot.

Side contest premise: Using their existing team in any of the three contests, owners would sign up for the draft slot challenge and compete against other teams within that contest who drafted in the same slot. So all No. 1 teams that signed up for this in the Main Event would compete for the No. 1 Draft Slot Challenge. The same side contest would be there for owners from No. 2, No. 3, etc. through the final draft slot in each of the three contests.

The Main Event would have 15 Draft Slot Challenges; the NFBC 12 and NFBC Online Championship would have 12 Draft Slot Challenges. Separate standings would be available for all No. 1s who opted in this side game, and all No. 2s, 3s, etc. for the entire season.

Only teams who opted into the side contest would appear in the Draft Slot Challenge Standings. Registration will be available when you sign up for these contests and even after your drafts are held as long as it's done before Opening Day.

NFBC Weekly Prizes Side Contest

Three NFBC contests would offer this side contest:

NFBC Main Event
NFBC XII
NFBC Online Championship

Each Weekly Prizes Side Contest would have separate Weekly contests to see who can score the most Rotisserie points for that particular week. Contests would run every week of the NFBC season with Registration open every week. Entry fees would be:

NFBC Main Event $50 per team
NFBC 12 $25 per team
NFBC Online Championship $25 per team

Payouts in each contest would be 85% and prizes for each weekly contest would be based on number of entries. Payouts will be 65% of prize money to 1st place, 25% to 2nd place and 10% to 3rd place through the first 25 entries. Payouts increase to Top 4 finishers and higher based on 25+ entries for any draft slot.. Again, all prizes based on the number of entries for each week.

Side contest premise: Using their existing team in any of the three contests, owners would sign up for the Weekly Contest and compete against all other teams within that contest who opted to play for that week. Teams would need to sign up before rosters are locked on Monday. Overall weekly standings would be listed just for those participants who entered this side contest.

I'm interested in your thoughts on this concept and if you'd have interest in competing in either of these side contests. Thanks.

Interestingly, if you look at the overall standings for each of the contests now and click on the weekly rankings, you will see how many different teams had the top weekly point total during the season. In the NFBC, there were 26 different weekly winners out of 27 weeks. Only Jung Ryu had the top team twice in the NFBC Main Event and that was in Weeks 21 and 22. So if the Weekly Contest had been held last year in the NFBC Main Event and everyone had participated, we would have had 26 different winners and a nice prize pool.

Obviously, we know that everyone won't be competing in these side contests, but even if a small percentage do there will be a nice weekly prize. I know that we offered the prizes in the past and I'll continue to work on that for everyone competing in our contests, but this is another way for our participants to push each week for the best possible team and to even win some prize money when you might be out of the league or overall money races.

In the NFBC XII, we had 24 different winners through 27 weeks. I believe that Avi Weisfogel, Michael Edelman and Jeff Butler had the high scores twice each. Still, it's a different winner most every week even in the 12-team format.

In the NFBC Online Championship where we had 864 teams, it's not surprising that we had a different top team during each of the 27 weeks. That's a contest where the side contest prize pool could be pretty solid even if a small percentage of teams participate each week.

Just something to consider. It's something we're working on now and both contests will be available in 2013. Thanks for any feedback on both concepts. It is something we can do in the NFFC as well and will do in 2013.

What would the prize structure look like in the online championship if say a league reached 20 teams for the weekly contest? I would suggest capping each league at 12 teams, to make it more like the actual league(15 teams for the main event). So at 12 teams, the entries would be $300. So at 85%, you could pay the winner of the 12 teams $170 and 2nd place $85.

So just fill up as many of these leagues as possible, then if you have left over teams, create an alternative prize structure or the league just doesnt fill as would a satellite league if you dont get enough sign ups.

I dont have much interest in the winner take all aspect if under 10 teams. It would probably cause me to skip doing the contest. You scrapped the winner take all satellite leagues because of lack of interest. Thats what would be created here.

In the Main Event and the XII, I also think it might be difficult to reach the required teams for each slot. Last year their were 28 main event leagues, so only 28 possible teams for each slot. How about doing slots 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15.

Good point. I've changed both prize structures to the following:

Payouts in each contest would be 85% and prizes for each slot would be based on number of entries. Payouts will be 65% of prize money to 1st place, 25% to 2nd place and 10% to 3rd place through the first 25 entries. Payouts increase to Top 4 finishers and higher based on 25+ entries for any draft slot.
