Player Position Eligibility Questions: Post Here

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Nov 21, 2012 8:42 am

Okay, it's time to finalize position eligibility for our draft room and I need the help of those folks who have already gone through a 50-round draft or have been knee deep in player research. Our rules are pretty specific when it comes to position eligibility, but the one area where I need to make a manual call involves those players who had less than 20 games played at any position in 2012 and have multiple positions with the same number of games. We don't give those players dual eligibility; the NFBC makes the call on that one position.

For instance, Brandon Allen has 3 games played at 1B and 3 games played at OF. We will make him 1B only. That has been his main position in the minors, he played mostly 1B in 2011 and he shouldn't be anywhere near LF!!

If you see any other players like that, post here and I'll officially make the call. Thanks.

Remember that Victor Martinez is C eligible since that was his official position in 2011. He didn't play a game in 2012.

Post here and we'll get every player's position finalized in time to open the draft room. Thanks all.

The rule for all minor-leaguers who didn't reach the majors last year is pretty specific: "d) Players who played all of 2012 in the minor leagues will be awarded position eligibility for the 2013 NFBC season based on the most games played at all levels in the minors. STATS will determine that one eligible position before Draft Day and that will determine that player's status for 2013 once he is called up to the majors."

Go to www.baseballreference.com for games played in the field. Under Grant Green you can see he played 79 games in the outfield, 19 at shortstop, 19 at third base and 11 at second base. He would be an outfielder, even though he has a chance to play at 2B to start the year. Once he plays 10 games at any other position this season in the majors, he would add qualification at that position, too.

I think I know the answer, but please to confirm:

Adeiny Hechavarria - 3B
Steven Vogt - C
Mike Olt - 1B

Thanks
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Vogt played 7 games at C, 2 in the OF, 5 at DH. He is C eligible.
Olt played 8 games at 1B, 5 at 3B and 2 in the OF. He is 1b eligible.

Melky Mesa: CF 1, DH 1 (pinch hit 2, but the rules clearly state that PH is not a position): He is OF eligible
Kyle Blanks: That's a good one. 1B 1, LF 1. He was OF eligible in 2012, so let's make him OF eligible in 2013
Luis Hernandez: 3B 1, SS 1. Wow, I need help here. Did he play 2B at Round Rock and then play just one game at SS and 3B in the majors? I'll try to find his Round Rock stats to make the call here.

Keep 'em coming. It's great therapy for all of us!!

Greg any chance you will used combined games for MI and CI eligibility?

For instance with Heckuvashortstop - using that he would be eligible at 3B and MI (25 games between SS/2B)

No. I think our eligibility rules are very, very solid thanks to input from our customers. Tell Adeiny to play 10 games at SS this year and he will be eligible at 3B, SS, CI and MI.

Greg,

I don't understand the rationale in picking a SINGLE position for players who (a) played fewer than 20 games in MLB and (b) played the same number of games at more than 1 position.

Why not just give dual eligibility? That has been the rule in every other league I've played in, and it works great. No subjectivity. No need to make a call. Pretty straightforward.

Good Point - for example Kyle Blanks with one game at both 1B and OF should be eligible at both positions .... WHY have to pick one

That's great to hear. No, someone who played 1 game at two different positions doesn't deserve dual eligibility for the whole next season. They have one designated position per our rules and they can gain eligibility when they play 10 or more games at a new position. Pretty straightforward.

Okay, Luis Hernandez will be SS eligible in 2013. He played 1 game at 3B and 1 game at SS. Hernandez played 113 games at SS and 15 at 2B in the minors last season. He will be SS only to start 2013.
