Whither Chapman?

Post by Chris Hahn » Wed Mar 20, 2013 6:08 pm

From Reds beat writer John Fay:
John Fay wrote:The Aroldis Chapman Question is giving the Scott Rolen Question a run for the money as far as longevity. If I had to guess, I’d say Chapman ends up in the bullpen. But I think there’s a chance they don’t use him in the traditional closer’s role. Instead, he pitches two or even three innings at a time. That way he could transition to starting if Mike Leake struggles.
It's a long season, of course, and 2012 is a great example. But so far this year, Chapman's a starter (and being drafted as a high end one, of course). Then, he's a closer (behind only Kimbrel, it seems). Then maybe he's neither, and if so... stomach punch, right?

I think his ADP is too high, but I'd pay $14-$15 for him in an auction. That puts him in the low 2/high 3 SP range. I don't think anybody's predicting much more than 150-160 innings for him, but that COULD equate to 160-180 K's. He's going to walk people no matter what his role is. If he starts in the pen, or they put him back in the pen after a few starts, he COULD be a steal for $14-$15.
