Monthly Leagues?

Post by fwicker » Tue Nov 12, 2013 12:54 pm

At the recent Baseball HQ AFL meeting in Phoenix there was a discussion on monthly leagues. Just curious what the posters on this board thinks of them? I'm not a fan of daily leagues, to me it's pretty close to gambling, but I might see the allure of monthly leagues if all my season-long leagues were tanking. I wonder also if this is something that Stats/NFBC might look into in order to expand its menu.

OK, thanks for the response. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out.

I guess I'm another with no interest in monthly leagues. No objection if there is interest and the NFBC decides to offer them, but my participation will be limited to the season-long format.

Neither do I. It's like tearing a chapter out of a book.

Seems arbitrary.

Just to add a bit more context to this, Ron Shandler held a "birds of a feather" session for "monthly leagues" during one of the breakouts at BHQ's annual First Pitch Arizona meeting in Phoenix recently. Shandler had also hosted some free monthly leagues last year, and plans to host more this coming season.

One of the interesting sidelights to this hobby/obsession is to watch the evolution of the fantasy baseball gaming industry. So at First Pitch Arizona (Greg Ambrosius also attended) I noted was some interest in the monthly leagues (12-15 people in the hour at an outside patio table). There were also regularly scheduled sessions (in meeting rooms) on daily league strategies. Much more interest and attendance for those sessions. I had a pre-conceived notion that daily league demographics would run to younger players 20s to 30s and 40s .... but there were many folks my age (middle, late middle age) in those sessions!

I personally spend a lot of time on season long leagues and I doubt that I would really play in a monthly league; but I'm fascinated by the possibility of an evolutionary, hybrid game.

FWIW -- Ron ran monthly leagues last June and had over 400 entries. He did it again in September.

Plans for 2014 should be public soon enough.
