Greg,
Is this one of the biggest free agents in NFBC history?? Most of his bids were 400+ with some in the 800 range. He could be a big BIG waiver move if he lives up to the hype.

858 units in LV2 NL only Auction $1250 league.
That owner is in third, needs pitching, but also has 4 dregs on offense. He has 13 units left.
I'm a happy league mate.

WOW....I cannot believe how much he went for. He dominated at Scranton, which is a hitters park, and he did well the other night...but he is still a rookie...look at how hyped up King Felix has been, it's not easy making the transition to the bigs and remaining dominant...We'll soon find out if he was worth emptying the chamber on

I made a hefty bid for Hamels in NY2 and didn't even come close to getting him. He went for 402 and the runner-up bid was 401.

RSN2 -NFBC vegas league 2 (winning bid 631) I'm not sure what the record is, but I know we've had some 900 dollar bids in the past and one this year. Hamels has been absolutely dominating thus far and he pitched well in his Friday debut in terrible weather. If he lives up to the hype, he will definitely be a worthy pickup this early in the season. We'll have to see, I guess, which makes all of this so much fun!

Greg,
It would be interesting to see if he was the most overall dollars bid when you add up all the winning bids.

We snagged him for 826, which was only 425 more than necessary.
Needless to say, we like our chances. In Cole (and Prior, and Harden) we trust!

I bid 429 and lost...he went for I believe 441.
I'm going from rootin hard for him...to rooting hard against him...and will be comparing him closely to the man I'm filling his shoes with from my bench...Kerry Wood.
Fun, fun, fun!

This is a rare case where you have a prospect who emerged so impressively so fast that he warranted the high bids in every league. There is so much time left in the season that if he does what everyone expects, he could be a difference maker. We'll have to see if he lives up to the hype. I agree with Lance, fun, fun, fun.

I was hoping he would slip by to my $2 FAAB bid, but I was $400 short. Luckily I spent $500+ on Burgos!!

Couldn't resist being the accountant type, but of the 22 owners who purchased the services of King Cole, the $11,167 (if I didn't fat finger my 10-key) they collectively spent represents nearly 51% of their available free agent budget!
Good Luck!
Of the 330 owners, I wonder how many actually placed a bid on Hamels? I did (a paltry $121).

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I bid 456..lost out to 504..would have paid more if i thought he was gonna break 500
Sometimes I'm good and sometimes I'm bad....but I always try real hard.

I wonder what the closest runner-up was--and the furthest. I bid $60 and $80 on him. Fat chance there, though he went for just $313 ($279 runner-up) in my satellite league. That owner got a relative bargain.

I bid $300 and figured I had no chance at him but wanted to make sure he did not go cheap and he went for $504

I was going through my various NFBC leagues and one after another I discovered I bid far too low ($826 main, low $500's average), so I was shocked I got him for $313...time will tell if it is indeed a bargin or bust.

As the winning bidder, (a modest $858), I may not be the most un-biased ownerr; however, it seems clear to me that........ 1) Hamels has done all that could be expacted of him thus far.....2) He's a good fit in a 5x5 league..... I'm currently in second place overall, but last in wins and strike-outs....3) Nothing"s worse than 6th place on July 29th with $929 fab dollars and no chance of winning. It'll be interesting to see if an expensive, untested, injury-prone rookie can help me to a title.

You guys are talking to the man who bid 922 on Wily Mo Pena in the Vegas auction. He's made a difference, 320 , 4 hr's and 17 rbi's.Considering i have D Dejesus , who doesnt play , because of injury.Wily has been a nice addition, and yes im in 1st.Now on this coles fellow, i had no idea he would go this high.In the ultimate i bid 144 and he went 748 to red sox nation. In vegas main league 3 , i bid 177 , but he went over 700 again. We will see.

Good luck with Hamels guys...fyi have you seen his injury history? He has a terminally injured back which cannot be healed. He is receiving shots for the pain but they can only hope to keep the inflamation down since it can't be cured. He's bound to be injury proned his whole career. It'd be a shame to waste all that money just for the guy to have his back flare up like last year and end his season.

In the XM Satellite League I'm in, which is 15 teams and set up like the NFBC, my team is in eighth place and it badly needs pitching with A.J. Burnett and Eric Gagne on the DL. I bid $82 (out of $100) to get Hamels and I got him. But this league uses a system that Ron Shandler and a few other industry guys have been advocating, something called the Vickroy (I probably spelled it wrong). I didn't even know we were using it, but basically what it does is allow you to bid like normal and the player with the highest bid gets that guy for $1 over the next highest bid. In this case, the next highest bid was $53, so I got Hamels for $54. It's a savings of $28, which to me is crazy because I felt Hamels was so valuable to this particular team that I was willing to pay more.
I think I understand the reasoning behind this and I've read many articles by Ron about why he likes this better than straight FAAB, but in many ways I don't like it. I guess I could have bid $100 for him then and gotten him for $54. Anyways, I thought I'd throw this one out there since I know a lot of you guys are more familiar with this unique concept than me. I'm just happy to get Hamels and look forward to my lineup when guys like Burnett and Gagne get healthy again.

My gut feeling is I don't like it, but I'd be curious to hear the rationale behind it...

I guess I could have bid $100 for him then and gotten him for $54. Yeah, but if someone had bid $99, you'd have gotten him for $100 and wouldn't be able to pick up any players for the rest of the season, right? You still have to make a sensible bet.
I'm not against that system but the straight FAAB works for me and leads to humorous episodes where someone bids $300 and the next highest bid is $2. I like to laugh.
I do think of McLouth this week who has enormous value to me, depending on the team and league I would take him in. I'd hate to make a fool of myself and overspend on him. It would be a lot easier to get him at a cheap price but cover myself in case I have to pony up. At the same time, if others think the same he will go for a lot more than usual and overall that system would seem to inflate player prices, though it is not intuitive.
I do support the $1000 budget over $100.
