Radar Contact Wins Week 6 Prize
Doug McCready and Charlie Bennett had a simple plan heading into the Las Vegas League 6 draft in the NFBC: It was all about offense.
Last week, that plan paid off in a big way.
Paced by a standout offense that hit .303 overall, McCready and Bennett’s Radar Contact team in Las Vegas 6 topped the NFBC field last week with 2,772.5 points. Huge weeks offensively from Dave Roberts (.476, 7 SBs), Matt Holliday (.391-3-5), Miguel Cabrera (.346-2-9) and Rafael Furcal (.346-1-6) led the way.
On the mound, Dan Haren picked up 2 wins with 13 Ks, while Brett Myers fanned 11 and Jason Isringhuasen picked up 3 saves.
“Our draft day strategy was to go for offense first, as you seldom find any significant hitting on the waiver wire,” said McCready, who has been in the NFBC every year since its inception. “We had the No. 7 pick and took Derrek Lee, followed by Miguel Cabrera and Jeff Kent. The craze for speed was evident early, so we attempted to neutralize that by selecting Rafael Furcal, Julio Lugo and Dave Roberts in later rounds.
“A lot of things went right last week. Kent started hitting. Cabrera kept hitting. Holliday went on a tear. Dan Haren, Myers and John Thomson each had two starts and contributed to the pitching resurrection. Weathers wasn’t terrible. Both catchers delivered more than expected.
“It all seems so easy when everything falls into place, but the reality is that the team won’t hit .303 every week. We are praying for a safe and healthy return of Derrek Lee.”
While the offense has been in fine form even without Lee, pitching has been another issue entirely prior to last week.
“We thought that we had covered saves adequately with Jason Isringhausen and Eddie Guardado, but it is evident that we are still on the short side in that department,” McCready said. “The closer-in-waiting strategy worked with some success last year in the Mixed Auction, but those guys vanished rapidly this year.
“Pitching has been a weekly scramble. We are still trying to dig out of the hole that was created by Matt Cain, Carlos Silva, Jeff Weaver and The El Duque Experiment.”
McCready and Bennett are both retired air traffic controllers (“hence the team name,” McCready said). The two team up despite living in separate states – McCready is in Danville, CA while Bennett lives in Spokane, Wash.

Congratulations Doug and Charlie. I know that Doug is an avid Oakland A's fan, so those two wins by Haren were doubly sweet, right Doug!
Good luck the rest of the way.
