Start to slow draft

Post by Soupdog » Mon Mar 03, 2014 12:39 pm

Guy started slow draft out with Darvish, Scherzer, Bumgarner and Sale. Thoughts? He hasn't had his 5th pick yet (second last pick in 5th). Sure interested to see what his hitting line up looks like since he can't trade.

All he needs are four closers in the next four rounds, snap up the remaining speed guys and he can win 6 categories. Maybe cash in the league but not gonna compete overall.

Not my team, FYI.
I'm all done w/ DC slowbies til 'Nov.

I am sure we all thought it was your team. You are the only thing we think about. Next year it will be the NFDHBC.

I was going to say you should feel lucky to be in that league, I guess I should change that to "we" as I am in that league also :D

I would be more worried if he had grabbed a couple closers instead of those last 2 SPs. If he wants to compete in saves he will have to make 2 more pitching picks out of the next 8 rds to nab closers. If he doesnt get 2 closers, his 61 possible pitching points could possibly be not even the most in the league and his hitting will most likely be bottom of the barrel unless he gets lucky on a bunch of breakouts. Absolute best case scenario it's a 100 pt team.

I saw a guy start out a draft with Kershaw, Wainwright, Scherzer, Hamilton, Shields, Rosenthal, Uehera, Perkins, S. Miller. I thought he had a well thought out plan, will he win maybe not, will he money pretty good chance barring injury to Mr. hamilton.

It almost has to be the same guy. He just took Bos and S. louis closers in 5th and 6th. Almost identical guys.

The 'UC' factor always seems to torpedo teams like these.
While a well balanced team can take hits from UC ,a team set up like this one is only able to take two or three hits before being completely annihilated. When these type of rosters are constructed, they do not allow that they will lose at least 20 per cent of their star players for a time and that 35 per cent of their team will hit the disabled list.
The UC Factor is a bitch for these type teams.
And the funny thing is that bad luck will be blamed, not the drafting style.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Darvish/fernandez/holland/rosenthal/verlander / wacha seems like a much better start :D
injuries what are those things. They never happen and every player projection I make is at least 10 % higher than the year before.

The good old "Sweeney Plan." I know this has been used a fair bit by some in the past for the DC drafts. I experimented with it last year and cashed in two of the three leagues I used it in (end of brag). At first glance it looks crazy, however it's pretty effective if you're willing to accept that you have no chance at winning any kind of overall prize and are unlikely to win the league. Because of this, I think it's best to use in the leagues in which the payments are flat instead of tiered in order to maximize your value (sounds crazy to say a flat payout maximizes value, but with this it does). I have no data to back it up, but I would say in a vacuum, the odds of an average drafter cashing using a Sweeney plan is greater than that same drafter cashing using a balanced approach. I don't really see that it is any more susceptible to falling to the injury bug than any other strategy.

Edit- all that said, I didn't do it this yr. It takes a fair bit of planning and I just don't like the way it sets up this yr in comparison to last.

Strategy aside, there's a few risky players in that group.

Drafter is counting on Verlander to bounce back, Fernandez to repeat (or come close) a career season which just happened to be his rookie year, and Rosenthal who (I heard on XM this weekend) had more blown saves than Saves in the regular season.

I like the attempt at going against the grain but there are safer players than these which can help you get there. IMHO.

What are the odds he comes back in 7th and 8th with pitchers again? :)
