PhillyCheeseSteaks Wins Week 21 Prize

John Hogan is no stranger to success in the NFBC. He is a defending league champ, ranks 21st on the NFBC lifetime standings list and has already tasted the top spot in a weekly finish this year.

So it wasn’t a huge surprise to see Hogan do well again in Week 21. But it definitely was an enjoyable feeling yet again for the three-year NFBC vet.

Thanks to big weeks from Carlos Delgado (.389-4-11) and Jermaine Dye (.393-5-10, 8 runs), Hogan’s PhillyCheeseSteaks team in New York League 4 finished first in the NFBC last week with 2,846 points.

“It was a team effort,” said the 46-year-old Hogan, who is married and has three children and one grandchild. “Our whole team produced except for three players. We had a team average of .329 with 17 home runs, 56 runs, 57 RBIs, 4 stolen bases, 5 wins, 5 saves, a 1.00 WHIP and a 3.22 ERA.”

The pitching definitely came through nicely as John Smoltz won a pair of games and fanned 17 while Akinori Otsuka and Chris Ray had two saves apiece.

Week 21’s success was born on Draft Day when Hogan, who works for the school district in Philadelphia, and his co-manager (Mark Dickter) applied a balanced approach for their team needs.

“We wanted a balanced team,” Hogan said. “We wanted to try to get 12 points for each category with a target goal for each such as 270 home runs.

“We wanted to get all-around players. We followed a plan of a 7/3 or 6/4 hitter/pitcher ratio in the first 10 rounds. We are currently doing well in all categories except for Wins (2.5 points) and Stolen Bases (5).”

Logan has a baseball past, having played college ball at Drexel University in the late-70s/early-80s. The 54-year-old Dickter is married with three children and two grandchildren and works as a internal auditor consultant.
