Baseball is a changin

Post by Outlaw » Sat Sep 20, 2014 6:26 pm

The dearth of offense combined with the growing length of games has become epidemic in baseball. This is the first time in history the average length of games will exceed three hours. The 8.16 runs per game is the lowest in a full season since the 7.99 in 1976, according to the Elias Bureau. The 1.73 home runs per game is the lowest since 1.44 in 1992 and the overall major league batting average of .251 is the lowest since 1972 when it was .244.

Yeah, and lack of scoring SHOULD lead to shorter, not longer, games. Alas, the frequent pitching changes, coupled with batters seemingly stepping out of the box every two seconds, does cause games to drag on at times. Not sure what should be done about it - I'd like the games to move more quickly without really changing the game itself.

Also, although I suppose instant replay is better than no instant replay, this situation where managers take a SLOW walk out to the field after every close play does not help matters.

Steroids use eliminated or at least severely cut back.
Offense down to lowest level since 1976.
Coincidence????
