Jeter's Farewell

Post by Bronx Yankees » Fri Sep 26, 2014 6:28 am

Wow! What a game last night! I realize this doesn't have much, if anything, to do about fantasy baseball, but what a way for Jeter to go out at his last game at Yankee Stadium. In fantasy baseball, we are totally focused on the numbers - or at least selected numbers - and Jeter certainly has put up his share of amazing numbers over a long and storied career, but he also is a great reminder that, sometimes, real baseball is about more than just numbers.

I'm closing in on 50 and have been a lifelong Yankees fan. I've had three favorite Yankees: Thurman Munson, Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter. I still remember where I was when, as a young teenager, I heard the news that my first baseball idol had died in a plane crash. Always loved the way Mattingly played, but it was sad to see him go out a hobbled shell of his former self due to injuries, and a little bittersweet to watch the Yankees win the championship just after he retired. At least with Jeter, although there is no championship or play-offs this year (deservedly so), I got to see my current, and longest-tenured, baseball hero go out in an absolutely fitting way. If last night was a movie, it would have been panned as too unbelievable an ending. You can't script baseball, but in another sense, it was not particularly surprising to Yankee fans to see Jeter up with the game on the line and that he would hit a single to right field for that storybook ending. (What was surprising was to see Mr. Calm-and-Steady looking so nervous during a baseball game.)

It probably has been agonizing for non-Yankee fans to watch the Jeter farewell tour all summer. It did grow somewhat tired long ago, but last night truly was special. A great way for a great player to go out.

Very cool for sure. I found it getting a bit old but last night was really neat. What wasn't neat was Robertson getting the win! Remember the days when we just rooted for our teams and didn't care about who got a win or a save? Fantasy sports has forever changed that!

GREAT PLAYER, GREAT MAN.... Brought 20 years of fun to my family...and best of all, a role model I could speak to kids about on how to play the game the right way, how to act and respect others and parents. WELL Done DJ, You will be missed on the field. Watching Baseball will not be the same for this Yankee fan.. Us Yankee fans have been spoiled the past 20 years...

If ever a player had a chance at 100% vote for HOF, its him.. 2020

Obviously, everyone knows I am NOT a Yankee fan and this year has been so ridiculous with Jeter's farewell tour, that I have wanted to gag, at times.

But, that being said, my 2 boys, who love and play baseball, and thankfully, love the Mets, watched the Yankee game from the first pitch last night to the game winning walk off hit and you could see the gleam in their eyes and their admiration for this guy... not a power hitter, not explosively fast, not the best fielding shortstop who ever lived, but a guy who is the ultimate team player... when the Yanks needed a double, he delivered. When they needed a big double play, he delivered. When they needed to win a championship, he was the leader, and delivered many. Last night, they needed a single, and he delivered.

For nearly 20 years, the New York Media and the rest of the media in this country had the opportunity to dig into this guy's past and present and find something to tarnish his nearly perfect off the field reputation. Nothing. He is the best role model for any kid who wants to play this wonderful game and even though he plays for the Yanks, if my kid says he wants to be like Jeter, I will take that every day of the week.

Great that you could enjoy the game with your boys last night. Regardless of what team you root for, it was a special night for baseball, and one of those rare instances where the event actually matched, or exceeded, the hype.

As a Mets fan, I think there's a good chance you'll enjoy the next decade more than me (especially with the young pitching on that team). The Yankees have a lot of holes to fill now and I think they are going to miss having Jeter around. I know I will.

Derek Jeter is what we want to be. He is what we wish for in our sons. We want our daughters to find a husband like him.
Jeter is more than a great baseball player. He is a man who has resisted temptations that most men could not.
A man who plays for the team in sports with the most history. A man who plays in the toughest media town in the world.
Few men in sports can live up to an image that fans build.
Jeter did.

For us modern day sports fans, Jeter is a breath of fresh air. A throwback. A player who takes his team into account first, not his bank account.
The pollution from players deeds in football have dominated news headlines. Jeter's game yesterday, will only make news in sports circles. As it should be.
We don't want our sports heroes to be newsworthy. We only want them to be worthy.
Jeter is.

We will never see a single digit number on the back of a Yankees jersey again. None of us saw Lou Gehrig play even one game. But still with numbers and baseball ingrained in us, a flashing thought of Gehrig hits us when we see a player wear the number '4'. A hundred years from now, it'll be the same for fans when they see the number '2'.

Wow. This is a reporter rebuffed in attempts to find dirt on Jeter, so he stretches.
He has Girardi 'smiling' as if hiding something. He uses cortisone and steroids together as if they're one and the same.
A pass on the Therapeutic Exempt list isn't even needed for cortisone.
Cortisone is acceptable in every walk of life. If over 30, you've probably had cortisone shots. It is a way to avoid the pain of an affliction, not increase athletic ability.
Jeter could have used ibuprofen or aspirin too. SHRIEK!

This writer has made a big deal of Jeter getting a cortisone shot. Something we could have read in a RotoWorld update as it happened...and never batted an eye.
A non-story.

A similar story....

Derek Jeter was caught in a bar last night. Flashbulbs popped and patrons rushed him when recognized. Jeter tried to hide the fact that he was in the bar. He covered his face with his coat and turned his head when seeing camera's.
What did he have to hide?
Jeter was in a bar that has had over 200 customers arrested for drunk driving. A bar that once had its license suspended for serving liquor to underage customers.
Several years ago, there was gun play in the bar that ended with two people murdered.
Jeter sat down and ate at the same table as the murderer.

He ordered a grilled chicken dinner. In parts of America, some chicken parts are being recalled. They were contaminated before reaching grocery shelves. Potentially, this chicken could cause diarrhea, vomiting, extreme sickness, or even death.
Derek Jeter was eating chicken and laughing.

Upon leaving, Jeter was rushed again by fans. These customers were all armed with sharp objects. There may have been blood shed.
Jeter would take these pens from folks and sign pieces of paper, shirts, and hats.
Ink is the number one cause of laundry being ruined.
Jeter only smiled.
He left in a Mercedes-Benz. Last week there were three Mercedes-Benz involved accidents alone. Each time, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was at fault.
Jeter smiled as he drove his Mercedes-Benz away.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Life long Yankee fan here. Back to the days of Horace Clark and Gene Michael.

Over the last several years when my daughter wanted a Yankee shirt of some kind, whether is was a green St. Patty's, a camo or a pink one, I always passed on the number 13 and steered her to number 2.

Red Sox put on a very classy tribute to Jeters Career, Well Done Sox Nation!

My 7 yr old Daughter was watching with me and when she heard it was Jeters last at bat/hit and they took him out of the game and that he would not be paying anymore she started crying, and I asked her why and she said, He is your favorite player and you will not get to see him play anymore. I explained that to her that he has many other things in life to accomplish and that's what he wants to do now and that i am happy for him and thankful for all the memories he brought our family and friends.

Thank You Derek for all the memories! Simply the Best I have seen in my lifetime!
