Position Eligibility Question

Post by fwicker » Sun Dec 07, 2014 12:45 am

Yasmany Tomas ... OF only? Or 3B as well... he played some in Cuba but can't find the stats.

Is the general rule of thumb for international players the position they played the most in the previous season?

Thanks

Greg/Tom and team will make the call based on best available evidence.

Personally, I think the 3B talk is all smoke...won't last spring training. Just a guess given what I have read says he is not such a great corner outfielder, so I just do not see him making a MLB third baseman.

Still, how about those Diamondback fans and the thought of watching Tomas and Trumbo anchor the outfield D in the corners....YeeeHawwww! Arizona better draft Barry Allen for CF. :?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I definitely agree that he's a very unlikely 3B, but I need a 3B in current draft, hence the question. He did play some 3B in Cuba but I have yet to find any Cuban stats. There is one site that purports to have Cuban stats but it's a work in progress, no stats yet.

Maybe they'll move Trumbo back to 3rd, or better yet to the AL as a DH. I suspect the DBacks are willing to trade his adventures in LF for league-elite power. Like the Giants did with an aging Bonds.

From http://obstructedview.net/commentary-an ... stats.html
Tomas only just clears the CBA’s new five-season requirement. He debuted in the 2008-2009 season as an 18-year old, and performed reasonably well in 102 PA. The next season he only merited 27 PA, however, and he didn’t see the field at all in 2010-2011. I haven’t found a good explanation for this, and it could well have just been based on performance. Starting in 2011-2012, he started playing more or less every day, seeing time all over the field, but mainly third base and left field. In 2012-2013, he became the primary center-fielder for Industriales. Tomas is 6’1″, 230 lbs. That he managed to play quite a bit of center speaks to his athleticism, even if he’s not expected to play anywhere but the corners in the majors. He may well have stayed in center were it not for the arrival of los hermanos Gourriel to start the ’13-14 campaign.*
