I agree that any additional prize money in the main event should go into 2nd through 10th place in the overall. The dropoff after 1st place is too much of a kick in the teeth for a handful of teams that had a great year and may have lost out on $100,000 in the last few days (not the case this year). Nice job Greg pumping up the prize money for the overall top teams.

I like the original thought behind this thread. I don't like where it went after that with the discussion of why the company is making money.
Getting back to the topic on hand; I actually think the prize pool for the top 3 in each league needs to be looked at closer before adding more to the overall winners pool. Here are my thoughts which I think are sound:
1 - $100,000 is a lot of money and will be even if we have more teams. Going to $110,000 will not change it all that much.
2 - Even though most of us want to win the overall prize, the truth is only one person per year does. The rest of us at some point in the season realize that and start looking closer at league standings than overall standings.
3 - $1250 is a good amount of money to spend on one league for most of us. With 15 teams per league, finishing in the top 3 is still a great accomplishment. Getting back less than the entry fee seems like you "lost".
4 - As we look at the winners listings this year and last, certain names seemto repeat. They are starting to emerge as the "professionals" amoung us to watch out for. If this trend continues, many of us will feel like their true shot at winning anything might start with our league and then, maybe, just maybe something more.
5 - Increasing league prizes I believe will keep people coming back year after year. The chance to get at least your money back for finishing in the top 3 will make the risk of playing seem more worth it. This will happen sooner than later as those who finish in the mid-bottom of their leagues 2-3-4 years in a row will back out. However, I think increasing league prizes may keep them returning. Heck, a 4th place prize of $500 should also be considered as we move along year to year.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.

I couldn't agree more with Triple A and Top Dawg. I've been saying this to Greg since Day 1 back in 2004.
You should either get your money back for finishing in the Top 3 or don't have a third (and put 3rd money towards 2nd). I do feel $5000 for first is plenty, however.
Yes, we're all here to win and all feel that we can with a little luck, but you have more control over your league than the overall and with so many teams (and more to come) the Grand Prize will be even more difficult. Knowing that as long as you have a good showing in your league and finish in the top 3 gets your money back makes it feel that much more worth taking a shot. Nobody that plays in an event like this believes they will finish lower than third in their league when they are signing up.

Personally I agree. Leave the $100k as is, pour money into the 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Then when the size of the overall gets enough to support $150 jump up the prize in big incrememnts

Greg,
When are you guys gonna hook up with some cable network to turn the draft and season into a reality tv show so that the prize $ and popularity can skyrocket
The strategy...the suffering....the characters....come on, it's tv waiting to happen
Then there won't be bickering about prize money, as you can use the tv money to make the grand prize a million and the divisions $ 25,000 apiece
When I see tv cameras at the draft I'll know you've heard me

When I see tv cameras at the draft I'll know you've heard me I sure hope everyone knows that I've been working on this for years, for baseball and football. The key is getting a host hotel that sees value in this event, then a key national sponsor who sees value in this event and then the rest follows as those folks want more eyeballs for their dollars. You have NO idea how hard I'm working all this and that day will come Lance. It will come, I promise.

Didn't work out too well for ESPN Mobile.

worked out pretty well for the poker crowd though didn't it.
And I don't see people wearing jerseys of their favorite poker card. We have a built in audience waiting to be tapped into, as baseball attendance sets new reords every season, in spite of Bud Selig.
I would invest in this if it were a stock....big, bright totally untapped future
