Who Has Been The First Month's Fantasy MVP?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri May 08, 2015 8:50 am

One full month of action is in the books, so it's always fun to look at the Player Rater to see who has been the Most Valuable Fantasy Player. STATS' Player Rater has the following as the Top 5:

1. Paul Goldschmidt
2. Nelson Cruz
3. Mike Trout
4. Dee Gordon
5. Jose Altuve

However, I like to look at the Draft Day bargains when looking at my Top 5. I'm not ranking them in any order, but the following players have to be right up there:

Jeurys Familia - ADP of 407
Bartolo Colon - ADP of 448
Devon Travis - ADP of 365
Jake Marisnick - ADP of 386
Jason Grilli - ADP of 539 (best Waiver Wire pickup)
Stephen Vogt - ADP of 292
Dee Gordon - ADP of 42
Dallas Keuchel - ADP of 216

That's just a short list. Let me know if I've missed any other good ones to put on the list. Who is your first month Fantasy MVP?

We often say that our past champions have won with stellar picks in Rounds 11 through 20. You always need a solid base of picks in Rounds 1 through 10, but the bargains are found in the middle rounds, moreso than the last 10 Rounds.

With that in mind, I looked at the ADP Since March 1st for picks 151-300 and came up with the best bargains of 2015:

Chris Archer - ADP of 165
Wil Myers - ADP of 169
Lorenzo Cain - ADP of 193
Luke Gregorson - ADP of 210
Dallas Keuchel - ADP of 216
Shelby Miller - ADP of 234
Stephen Vogt - ADP of 292
Adam Lind - ADP of 293
Alex Rodriguez - ADP of 295

Who else am I missing from Rounds 11 through 20?

5-1 - 2.90 ERA / .94 WHIP / 34Ks and 1BB (Yes 1)

ADP after March 1st = 448

I don't have him anywhere but I think the steal of the draft was Andrew Miller.

I said it on our Sirius show and I'll say it again that everyone who got Miguel Cabrera without spending the second pick in a draft for him got the best value in the first round. We just need to put him down as a Top 2 pick every year and forget about it from now on.

Devon Travis. While maybe not the MVP, he certainly has to be one of the biggest surprises, and of course I don't own him anywhere, but he has given phenomenal production for a late round flyer pick: .297/7 HRs/23 RBI's/20 R's/1 SB. While I don't think he keeps it up, he has to be giving a huge lift to fantasy teams that drafted him late to fil an MI position.

MIGGY- if trout stays healthy and goldy steals 20- miggy at best is the 3rd pick. also- in chicago i had pick 11 - after 8 picks McCutchen was still on the board. i told team 10 he might start out with a real lucky start. Cutch went at 9- his latest pick. luck can be when a guy doesn't fall to you.

maybe not the most spectacular but I drafted Kendrys Morales everywhere (19th round in the main event) and he's batting well over .300, 23 runs, 23 rbis and 4 homers.

Bryce Harper, but maybe he will be for May. Drafted him 2 straight years and almost decided to this year. After him not meeting expectations or coming close the last two years, I couldn't pull the trigger again. I just knew when I didn't he'd bust out. That's fantasy baseball for you!

I'd have to say Nelson Cruz so far. In my main event league he went in the sixth round in the 80's. Nobody bought in last year coming off the PEDs. This year it was the move to Seattle. Most predicted a power decline and the .350 average so far is an added bonus.

And a snappy dresser, too! :D

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I'll offer up one more. ADP of 228, Jake Odorizzi. 40.2 IP only 28 hits and 8 walks/32 K's.

Another name to add which makes April either so much fun or frustrating depending on if you own him or not:

Zach Cozart - hitting over .300 and on pace for 26 HR and 16 steals. I'm guessing he might have even been undrafted in some main events.
