What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
I believe this format should be postponed for now; seems like confusion at this point and if there is confusion as we head towards January, it does not bode well going forward.
Why not focus on promoting the formats already in place?

Well, let's see, we have 8 full DC leagues now, so pick a number Perry.Captain Hook wrote:(have only read first page, BUT)
If you had already started with one (or both) how many leagues would have already drafted.
PICK one or both and see what happens
We can't just run this contest without figuring out how to expand the rosters to the right size. Nobody is drafting in December with a 30-round draft and no FAAB. Once we figure out how to do this contest right, then maybe we can draft in December each year going forward.

The even number suggestion was good, 36 expanding to 46 seems reasonable.

scoring W for season long contests means you've missed the boat
I wouldn't worry about attracting new players, just retaining legacy players.

Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
I've got my first kid arriving any day, so I was planning to cut back my baseball leagues this upcoming season -- this format had me intrigued due to the lack of post-draft involvement. I've had a lot of fun with the NFFC Draft Champions leagues and was looking for something similar in baseball. In it's currently proposed format, I will likely not be playing.
Most of this stuff has been brought up, but this is what I was looking for:
I loved KJ's proposed scoring system from last year and actually used it in a private Yahoo league this year with my college friends, and it was awesome -- it boiled down 5x5 Roto to a single number, so that teams didn't have to worry about finding limited Power, Stolen Bases or Saves off waivers, they simply could add the best overall player at the position they needed, similar to Football.
For those who didn't see his scoring system, it was well thought out and virtually mirrored the standard 5x5 rankings with none of the 2B/3B stuff we see in the DFS-like scoring Greg is now suggesting:
AB = -1
H = +4
R = +2
RBI = +2
HR = +6
SB = +5
IP = +3
W = +6
SV = +6
ER = -2
H/BB = -1
K = +1
As far as FAAB, I think 3 periods would be the sweet spot, one right before or after Week 1, one at the All-Star Break before the playoff round, and one in the middle of that period (~mid-to-late May).
Draft 34 or 36 players, allow up to 40 rosters spots at the first FAAB, up to 44-45 at the second FAAB and up to 48-50 at the final FAAB.

Greg, I can live with either scoring system, will adjust. But The FABB is the time issue , What about set the FABB runs for the Cutline on Friday night to run at say 2:00 A.M EST (11:00 P.M. PCT). To take affect for the following Monday line-up. this way it doesn't add to the FABB nightmare of Sunday for the bigger money leagues. I also like the 4 Fabb period for the cutline and small build up of roster though the season.
Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
heck I was wanting them to be up by the 23rd so I could draft well I'm on vacation

Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
To add my thoughts, although I may be repeating general sentiment...
I honestly do not want to spend any of my time on Sundays during the season doing FAAB for $125 leagues, even if it is a couple weeks out of the year. If I did a number of Cutline leagues that's too much of a headache for so little money. If I had the choice I'd rather Cutline be done with the DC format.
The DC's are a nice way to get yourself familiar with whom to draft for the upcoming season, but I would do more of them if there was the option of optimal scoring/points system/no FAAB.

From all of the feedback here, I see two separate contests.
(1) The cutline setup works well with FAAB. It works for many veteran players and new players. It definitely doesn't work for everyone, but from a game play standpoint and a "quick draft" standpoint, you simply need at least a couple of FAAB periods.
(2) If (IF) we can get the cutline off the ground this year, I could see it spawning a second optimal-scoring game next season. A no-FAAB, a no-lineup optimal-scoring league. Very likely a standalone contest with 50 rounds drafts.
It would probably be a mistake to introduce both in the same season - adding risk to a guaranteed overall prize pool contest, but assuming a successful cutline intro this season it certainly seems like there is demand, especially by veteran players, to have standalone draft-and-done options in the future.
Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
I don't normally comment but just wanted to put in my 2 cents, in hopes that some form of this contest will get off the ground this year. The appeal of this contest is the same as the NFFC DC format. I think the appeal of the Optimal scoring is diminished when you start adding FAAB's. I can only speak for myself but I think where most of your market for this contest will come from is guys who will buy multiple teams. I know I would buy more teams if I didn't have to worry about the time involved on in season management. My time is limited with my family as it is. While I think there would be some overlay with the DC leagues the guys who prefer slow drafts and 15 teams will still play those. The selling point that differentiates the 2 formats is the lack of time needed in season, I think adding FAAB's misses the mark, at least for me.
As far as scoring goes I prefer the "DFS" style scoring proposed by Greg, mostly because it is something I am familiar with having played in points style leagues for many years. But I will adjust either way. I just want to see this format in some form this year and the people will drive any changes necessary to make it successful. Ok back to lurking now.

I agree with this. There are two separate groups here.
The Cutline has FAAB and a playoff system after the All-Star game. Two things that are not thought highly of by the second group, which wants no FAAB and season long competition for all.
The first game, a draft and manage. The second, a draft and go.
I do believe that the second contest would support 60 round drafts with just 10 team leagues. And would offer 'higher scoring games' and more drafting, something most want.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I would FOR SURE sign up for at least a handful of 60-round, No FAAB, Full Season Points (no Cutline Playoffs), with KJ's scoring system.

Re: What Is The Latest On The Cutline Championship?
It's obvious that we're not all going to agree on the format for this new entry-level contest, but I do think the time is right to unveil a points-style, optimal-scoring format in the NFBC. I've given this a lot of thought and I think there's a format that can work and after this season we can tweak it, improve it and continue to grow it.
It's no different than any other contest we've unveiled in the past. Heck, the popular Draft Champions Leagues were only 45 rounds the first year with a low grand prize. We expanded to 50 rounds the next year and it became a better contest, now with a $28,000 grand prize. You guys made the necessary changes to improve that contest and all other contests.
Heck, the Main Event had changes proposed by you folks too, including increased minimum innings pitched levels. You made suggestions to make that game better.
When we unveiled the NFBC Online Championship, the grand prize was only $30,000. We were unsure if that format would take hold and grow. It did and now the grand prize is $100,000. So I think we have to stop listening to all of the critics, unveil this game and improve it every step of the way.
I want to unveil the new rules tomorrow, ask for input and finalize it in the next week. We aren't going overboard with the grand prize because we are limited to 3 months of drafts now. We know that if this format takes off that in future years the overall prize pool will continue to improve. But it's time to see if the masses want a game like this and to improve it once we get through a season. Some folks may sit on the sidelines this year and see how it goes and we understand that, but we've gambled with new game formats in the past and we think this one has the potential to succeed.
Our goal with the NFBC Cutline Championship is to start drafts after the first of the year. We hope to offer drafts every night at 7 and 9 pm ET, or sometimes at 10 instead of 9. We think folks will enjoy that impulse buy during the cold winter months when a 10-team, 34 or 36-round draft seems like fun. Figuring out the final parts of this contest hasn't been easy, but hopefully a middle ground has some potential.
We still believe very strongly in our Draft Champions format and we're not trying to undermine that contest. A lot of people still like drafting a complete farm system of players and managing that 50-man roster throughout the year with no FAAB involved. Yes, you still have to set your Starting Lineups each week with those teams, but some people DO enjoy that process. Not everyone wants optimal scoring lineups for every format.
In football, we run two different contests as well. In the NFFC, the Draft Champions is the optimal scoring lineup and the Cutline is the short, quicker drafts with owners setting their starting lineups and managing 3 FAAB periods during the year. They are different and both popular. We think we can get to that point here, too.
Give me another day to work on this and then look for a new thread. Thanks all and stay well.
