Do not draft with list?
Re: Do not draft with list?
I just find it weird how when "customers" and I mean paying customers have issues it's always our issues. Shouldn't it be the companies issues? I'm new here but I see a lot of "customers" running leagues and auctions and making this company money but then the "customers" are being ignored when they make suggestions or complaints? As I've said I'm new here and have heard nothing but I'll send things on to IT or the new draft room will be ready 1st part of January or we will put a bug in their ass to slow drafters. But nothing comes to fruition? I love all the formats and am hoping to do more and a live event next year and every year after. I just can't figure out why a business would be so combative towards good "customers" when concerns or questions are being asked. Furies post was a good one but there is no reply no solution to issues and all we are told is find or start your own league? Are we getting a cut of these leagues? Just a thought?
In the end we are all here because we love baseball and love fantasy baseball even more. We have somehow gravitated to the NFBC and it's products but like any business products are not perfect and need to be upgraded to fit the demand of "customers."

Re: Do not draft with list?
I prefer fast/slow drafts with Mike and/or Dan and I've done an express draft. All of my $150 DC drafts fall into one of those categories. But if you want to try a $400 league, you're rolling the dice.
I'm in a $400 draft right now with a guy who is literally timing out in every round. He just took eight hours to pick Cuddyer in round 48. He's the reason this draft won't end today. He's the same guy who took the maximum amount of time in all 30 rounds of a recent Online Championship Draft. Passive aggressive much there, Slugger?

I was just about to say this same thing, the clock just stops for the 8hrs or whatever over night, but anyone can still make a pick...I think this has been stated in the past.76erfan wrote:I'll say this. Cbs has slow draft option and between midnight and 8 am or whatever option u decide time doesn't count. U can still pick but clock actually adds times.
So let's say I picked at 4:05 pm est...8 hours takes me to 5 min after midnight. Since clock doesn't run midnight to 8. My clock expires at 805 am..you could shorten that to say 4 hours over night or whatever but the clock automatically is coded to acct for sleep time.

Re: Do not draft with list?
For years I have drafted in message board leagues at FBG.com. These are considered "8 hour pick leagues" BUT if you time out the YOUR clock is cut to 4 hours - Time Out again and it will be cut to two hours. Once more (and this rarely if ever happens) then it will be cut to one hour and at that point a drafter won't be holding up the draft.
Of course these drafts are done on the boards so this is easily administered - not sure that stats IT could ever program something like that, although one alternative (not sure this is possible with current system) is to have the draft moderator wind the clock down when necessary.
I will say one other thing - I don't think the NFBC does a good enough job of making sure that EVERY entrant into these contests understands what the Draft Etiquette SHOULD be before they are put into a draft. Seems like that would help a lot.
You can't expect them to get it from threads like this - the majority of customers rarely see the message boards.

I don't think that's true at all. Greg and I have a 12-year history of listening to our customers and making improvements based on their suggestions. The DC contest itself sprang from a customer's idea. I think one of the things Greg and I have done extremely well is listen to what our customers are saying. That doesn't mean we'll implement every idea we're given. Quite simply what one person likes may not be what the majority want so that has to be weighed into every decision.Gb2715 wrote:I'm new here but I see a lot of "customers" running leagues and auctions and making this company money but then the "customers" are being ignored when they make suggestions or complaints?
Again, we know there are features we can add to the DC contest to make it even better. It's our hope we'll be able to implement more in the years to come and we understand people's frustration that more haven't been added already. But we are listening and we do encourage ideas and thoughts to improve everything we do.

Re: Do not draft with list?
It's explained in the rules as well Perry. Unfortunately not everyone reads the rules of the contests they are signing up for. That happens frequently and isn't something we can control. But we do have an explanation there. If we need to add more we can certainly do that.Captain Hook wrote: I will say one other thing - I don't think the NFBC does a good enough job of making sure that EVERY entrant into these contests understands what the Draft Etiquette SHOULD be before they are put into a draft. Sorry for implying you don't. My post needed to be taken as a whole not just the one line. As I said we all came to the NFBC for one reason or another. But on this issue we were being told yesterday to either deal with it or start our own? Then Furies posted and then nothing. That's what I meant I was referring to this one instant. I would love to start a draft today but can't do a fast one this week. I don't feel like doing another 8 hr with no chat no flow and just being frustrated. I have also stated previously and others that without us fast drafters the slow drafters wouldn't have a league so the product would go away if all us get to frustrated to participate in them. I love the Cutline drafts but none were scheduled for early today and I can't commit to the evening one so as I said I am not spending money with the NFBC today. So all in all it is what it is but I've heard the slow drafters are "new customers" so how many drafts are they filling compared to how many all others would have done if they finished faster so they could start another or others that have given up on them would have played in? Just a thought

Re: Do not draft with list?
Some suggestions:
1) Put the "slow draft etiquette" blurb in the email confirmation we get when the league fills -- and make it explicit.
2) Moderators could intervene periodically to "keep up the pace."
3) Go to a 4-hour clock as standard and make the 8-hour an option.
My 2 cents.

Re: Do not draft with list?
Since this thread/annual tradition is going in all different directions, I'm going to reintroduce an idea that Dan/Doughboys brought up in prior years for a way to make the DC's better for all, and that is to set up three different options when you sign up for a DC:
Slow (expectation is 1-3 rounds a day)
Medium (expectation is 3-5 rounds a day)
Fast (expectation is at least 6 rounds a day)
Setting the contest up this way forces people, particularly new players, to understand/read the rules on draft etiquette, etc. on what they are getting into when signing up. As noted above, this was suggested in years past and not set up, so Greg/Tom/anyone else describe how this would make the contest decrease in size/become worse if this was set up for the 2016/17 DC's. There would be no need for all the special drafts to accommodate people, other than the great leagues already in place like the premature league and the Mia draft.
For those that say the slow or medium drafts would be easier competition, either sign up for them and deal with the slowness without complaining or pick the fast option and the potential tougher draft.
The issue isn't the clock, as it's an 8 hour clock in the FAST options and they are done in 4-6 days. It's the different expectations, potential lack of knowledge or understanding for a new player when signing up, or the disrespect of the few that choose not to check their drafts and/or communicate their schedules to fellow drafters.
This seems like a solution that would make the contest better.

Re: Do not draft with list?
This sounds like a great solution. Shouldn't be too involved for IT either. People would be able to choose the pace they like to draft at. I would be in the Medium group. About 5 rounds a day is perfect for me.

Re: Do not draft with list?
Again, a ton of great input from everyone on here who all really care about improving this great product, but all I read is defend, deny, and justify. It has become the same tired story year after year. I would like to read a definitive post on this subject from Greg or Tom as to just what is going to specifically and measurably be done for 2017 to resolve the myriad of issues with the DC product which have plagued this great concept for years. As of this post, there have been almost 3000 views on this subject, so what does this tell you? And no, it's not because the same dozen of us or so who are posting have nothing better to do than read the same thread a few hundred times over. This is not a topic that should be swept under the rug. It needs to be discussed in both an open and closed forum for resolution since it is a topic of huge concern and interest to not only us, but so many others of your clientele who only read the posts on these boards, but do not take the time nor have the inclination to post their feedback and input. So can we all have a substantive response that doesn't divert from the subject, put it on us as the clientele, or pass the buck to STATS IT for once that will lead us to believe that the draft champions experience and product will be much improved by the 2017 season?

Re: Do not draft with list?
Ditto on the CBS reference from 76'er. I have done slow drafts for several years on CBS with a local league. We actually start with a longer clock in the early rds and then ratchet the clock down as we go further into the draft, by rule. By the end we are at 2 hours per pick but the clock cannot expire overnight just like 76'er said. The owners on the clock overnight can make as many picks as they want as the draft does not freeze. Only the clock does. Works like a charm.

Re: Do not draft with list?
This is because CBS has the software capabilities to do pretty much anything, but we do not. Another day of hundreds of posts has gone by and more money being processed for leagues never being an IT issue, that's for sure, but still no response to what I wrote and requested. I'm sure we'd all like to know what to expect.
And on another note, Can IT please friggin' fix the annoying disabled cookie or whatever the hell it is that forces us to have to log in with our username and password every time we're kicked out of the draft room or otherwise close out from a league without logging out?! This used to work at one time thankfully, and now it doesn't.

Re: Do not draft with list?
Mike, I have no problem answering any question about anything involving the NFBC at any time. You or anyone else could easily ask those questions on the Live Chat thread I started last week. I have no desire to be part of the Do Not Draft List thread.Baseball Furies wrote:This is because CBS has the software capabilities to do pretty much anything, but we do not. I'm sure we'd all like to know what to expect. [/i][/size]
But since you've asked here I'll answer everything you've asked. Hopefully we'll be on the same page after this.
First, I'll explain my response on Saturday morning to Steel Lugnuts' post. Timing is everything and I felt that one day after we sold out 5 Draft Champions Leagues it wasn't right to revive this thread and call out one DC League that was slower than expected. I've asked owners to contact me if you're in a slow, slow draft and I'll personally intervene and contact those owners.
That being said, I'll apologize to Bruce for not looking at his situation closer before making my post. Those guys are in Round 26 after 16 days, which is the slowest draft I can ever remember. There's no reason for any DC to go 30+ days.
That being said, I've talked with Bruce since our posts, I contacted the two owners involved and even this morning Bruce said things are moving much better. Communication is the key and had someone contacted me earlier I would have been on this situation sooner, but hopefully we now have this league moving in the right direction. Again, I apologize for jumping on the owner sending the message through our boards, but going forward please contact me personally so that I can do something about it rather than just blow up at folks in a public forum.
And I'll admit, this thread does bother me. There's one guy listed now forever on this thread who has done dozens and dozens of DCs. He's pushing through some issues at work right now and admittedly has been slower than usual with some of his picks and now he's on this list forever despite a track record that proves otherwise. He texted me and said he was disappointed with his public flogging, but understood that people can get this way at times. So I'm not sure a list like this is always accurate just because someone has experienced some slow picks from newbies or NFBC veterans. I bet if someone had contacted me there that I could have found out the reason for the delays and helped that owner pick faster.
Anyway, that's what happened this weekend and I'm glad Bruce said his DC is kind of back on track and moving forward better. Glad I could help that one. And as I posted on my Live Chat thread, you can see that every other DC is on pace for a 20-day finish and we are selling out 2-4 DCs a day. These have been good for the NFBC, not bad.
Yet some folks want things improved and I get that. So let's discuss:
NOBODY wants the Draft Champions format PERFECT more than me and Tom. I mean, hell, we filled up 192 leagues last year and we're on pace for 200+ this year and yet people still want them better. I get it. We'd love every single bell and whistle in these draft rooms that you guys want. I mean, why wouldn't we? But as you know, Tom and I aren't programmers and there are limited resources for these projects even at STATS. Sure, don't we all wish we had the number of programmers that CBS Sports or ESPN or Yahoo or other sites have? Sure. But ESPN also just went live last week and we've been drafting since November. So there's good and bad with every company. Let's remember, we are one very, very small piece at STATS that was brought together when our 2011 season was in peril. We have more to be grateful for than disappointed in, at least from my standpoint.
Anyway, we can have Trump-like posts all day long for things we don't have, but the simple answer is that we need to make sure our resources are best served providing items we need right now. If we had additional resources we'd have:
* 2-Round Auto for DCs
* Sleeper clock during the evening hours
* Timer to keep track of time each owner is on the clock
For some people, those are very important to move DCs along faster and to call out some owners who are slowing down DCs. Some people may think those are easy changes to make to a draft room, but they aren't. And if that's all we could have for this year, is that really best for the NFBC?
At the beginning of each season we have to decide what we want the programmers to work on and we have to allocate those resources to items we feel are best for the NFBC. I know you think we have a baseball off-season, but unfortunately we're also improving the NFFC site and the basketball site and the tools involved in those sports. Our biggest focus this year was getting the NFBC Cutline Championship off the ground. As you know, this is a concept we've had for three years now and I had hoped to get this off the ground in 2014 and 2015. The programming needed for the industry's first optimal-scoring league format is massive and it's not going to be easy. We didn't officially debut this contest until early January because we really had to commit massive resources to get this project done. It was either get this done for 2016 and add more drafts to the NFBC or choose other items. We don't have unlimited resources where we just say WE WANT IT ALL, so Tom and I have to choose and prioritize these items.
In my eyes, launching the industry's first optimal-scoring baseball contest where we could once and for all program this and create a contest where drafts will be held every night all off-season long was the most important item we needed in the NFBC. My idea of having drafts every single night and having impulse buys in the winter for folks who really love to draft was more important to the NFBC than adding 2-Round Auto for an already successful format. You may not agree, but these are the choices we have to make each season. And honestly, the other companies make these decisions too.
We meet with the programmers once a week for updates and I prioritize things for them all the time. I know what we can and can't get done. Heck, we still need the new HTML draft room, which we have overpromised for a year. We HAVE to get this live because Flash is not the answer for a draft room and we know it. Whether you like the look or not, the important thing is that we have to get this live, get it working to perfection and get away from a Flash draft room. This is eating up a lot of programming time too and whether you think we're doing it right or not or whether you think it looks good or bad doesn't matter. People want to draft on Apple products and we need to get this damn thing live and working. So that's Priority 1 and has been all off-season.
With any luck the new HTML draft room will go live today, but we'll keep the old one available just in case as well. Note that if you like drafting from your phone in the old HTML draft room that will remain one of three options after today.
We need to update the ADPs to be sorted by any period and by contests. That's very important. We are adding a button to Draft Prep that will allow you to download the ADP into your online draft room, which also should be available this week.
We need to have the UT position more flexible for your Starting Lineups by Opening Day. That's very important.
We have other promotional items we need help with. So at the end of the day we have to prioritize the things we need and get them done. Right now everyone is focused on the DCs and on ripping STATS for not allocating more resources to make them FASTER when at the same time they are completely doing what we wanted. They are moving along nicely and filling every day.
What I don't get is that if NFBC veterans only want a format that includes serious owners who want to do 5 or more rounds a day then why don't folks sign up for the 4-Hour DC? I know, I know, it's not on the Countdown and I've asked IT to add that ASAP. There's no reason that it's not on the Countdown. But I mean, no newbie is signing up for those, so if you want just NFBC veterans who pick quickly then sign up there or form one in advance and I'll sign everyone up. And if you need the clock moved to 8 hours at night just tell me and Tom and we'll switch the clock from 4 to 8 at night. I mean, this is easy for us to do if you ask. Sure, it's not automated, but it's a 10-second switch for us to do. I mean, doing faster drafts with like-minded owners isn't an impossible solution here and if you need me and Tom to help we will.
Yes, we need to get the 4-Hour DC on the Countdown, but I see no reason why those shouldn't be filling with guys who want to draft quickly. If that's what you want, and it sounds like some of you do, then the link is there to be filled by only like-minded owners who will be ready when they are on the clock. Seems like a simple solution and it's already there.
Again, Tom and I are on your side. We're also STATS employees who know what can get done each year. Rip us all you want, but the bottom line is that we had the draft room open months before other sites went live, we are TRYING to get this new online draft room live, we have the opportunity for people to load their own draft lists or the latest ADPs, we have nightly drafts or daily filled slow drafts, the Cutline is more successful than I had imagined, the Auctions are filling like never before, the private leagues are filling like never before and hopefully our 12-team format with the big league prizes will be well received.
But we don't have 2-Round Auto. Just kidding. I wish we did.
Yes, we could have A LOT more here. But we're not a gold mine for any company. The players get most of the money and that's the way it should be. We have a solid product that with unlimited resources could be everything you guys want. But let's keep improving the product -- like we're doing right now with the addition of the Cutline and more -- and in time we can allocate those resources to the DC. I just felt we had other priorities this year.
Now I hope this explanation helps. If anyone wants to holler in big, colored type at me they are more than welcome to, but finding solutions to make the NFBC better is more important. Good luck all and thanks for all your support. This really is the greatest fantasy baseball community ever assembled and I love your passion. I just want you to know that it's matched by the passion Tom and I have here, along with everyone at STATS. We're with you, but sometimes not every single request can be granted. And that's where we're at.

Greg - GREAT post. I can only speak for myself, but seeing the big picture as you laid out was important. Thanks for posting!

Re: Do not draft with list?
Seeing the big picture is nice. But for me, and I would of thought most of us, it's not necessary. Greg has demonstrated a passion for all things NFBC at every turn. We have all seen, if not experienced, Greg going well above standard in so many different ways. Can anyone really think Greg doesn't do everything possible to make the NFBC as good a product possible? Has he not asked for/listened to/acted off of our feedback countless times? Has he not always been transparent as to why some things aren't always exactly how he'd/we'd like? What entity that any of us deals with in our real lives do any of these things better? If Greg hasn't earned our trust by now.....
Greg has navigated us through multiple ownership entities. Nearly anyone else running the ship would have sunk the NFBC at least a couple times by now. Greg always gets us paid. Greg constantly tries to improve the brand and the product. But on the very odd occasion their is a hiccup, some of you feel the need post shit in here that's frankly mind-blowing. And massively disrespectful to a guy that has out-earned our respect.
I think anyone who has met Greg would call him a friend. I know some of the folks who seem to put Greg/the NFBC on blast regularly in these message boards consider him a friend. If I have a problem/concern with a friend, and decide to address it, I go out of my way to do it privately. Some seem to have the opposite instinct. Sure, some things are best to be discussed openly. But most of the rants I've seen over the years in here had zero reason not to be a phone call or email. Or better yet kept to your whiny, self-important selves.
I may have piggybacked off of Mark's post, but this isn't pointed towards him or anyone one specifically. I mean, except Baseball Furies. I'm definitely talking about him. I think in general, many of us have had our moments of frustration when small flaws seemed like big problems. We take for granted the greatness of NFBC. To get an A+ in this industry, you need to do three things. 1) Offer a sustainable high stakes, large grand prize contest. 2) Pay the winners. 3) Continually try to make it better. Anything above that takes it up from a 99.5 score.

To get an A+ in this industry, you need to do three things. 1) Offer a sustainable high stakes, large grand prize contest. 2) Pay the winners. 3) Continually try to make it better. Anything above that takes it up from a 99.5 score.
Re: Do not draft with list?
One problem I have seen with the DC's is even if you have auto on, it is often knocked off if you "check in". If you don't catch this, you can take a large chunk of time when you don't mean to. Maybe I'm the only one having this issue, but the auto shouldn't come off unless manually taken off.
Re: Do not draft with list?
Thanks Greg for keeping in mind the flexibility of the UT position. That would be a great change.

Re: Do not draft with list?
How about an option to be texted when your pick is up?
I'm in a league where there's no real offender, but several owners take 3+ hours to pick. Maybe they don't know they're up? I think there's some East Coast/West coast draft position toggling going on...so nights sometimes move slow. We've slowed down significantly the past few days at the halfway point. Burning too much daylight. Will challenge the league that took a month at this pace.

Great news, Greg. You can stop worrying about your friend's shattered reputation. The posts mentioning him by name have been edited and replaced with more cheerful content.Greg Ambrosius wrote:And I'll admit, this thread does bother me.
Still preserved for posterity, I'm afraid, is this gentlemen's chat room outburst where he calls league members various names in capital letters and taunts them over their suggestions that people should start using auto one as a courtesy. Being told to "put your own team on auto one" is actually pretty galling when you've made a half a dozen auto picks in a row because some guy has already sucked all the fun out of your draft. I realize now I was wrong for mentioning that on this thread.
I know this gentleman employs more people than the US Military and he flies back and forth to New Zealand twice a week, so I'm really glad that he "understood that people can get this way at times."
I don't think I'm very critical of the NFBC or the guys running it. Nor is it my habit to pull the pin and blindly toss a grenade in here just for laughs.

Re: Do not draft with list?
Sure, when these league snowball they snowball. I have another one where an owner is asking for refunds because we let people from his league email him. Another one is sending us to the Better Business Bureau because the DC isn't what he expected and he's being bullied in that league. So I get it Jim, I really do. Guys can get pissed for others going too slow and when pushed those owners react in ways you'd never expect. I see it.
As for friends, I don't have any favorites. I like all of you. But like I said before, I'd rather have folks call me to contact disruptive owners and see if I can find a solution to pick up the pace rather than call them out on a public forum. But I'm done making that argument because it's a no-win one. This thread never goes away.
More importantly, best of luck in the remaining rounds of this DC and sorry it hasn't gone the way everyone had planned. That sucks.

Re: Do not draft with list?
Greg, first of all, thanks for taking all the time that you did to reply to not only my posts and but everyone else on here as well. It was much appreciated. One thing that no one can ever accuse you and Tom of is not being passionate and caring about the NFBC and what you guys do and are trying to do. This thread was not about that, nor does it call into question your integrity or desire for a better product to be delivered for your customers. My posts were never intended to "rip" anyone. This gets nothing accomplished, and most of us on here are smart enough to know by now that you have to answer to the powers that be at STATS and a lot of or most of what ails us and these contests are out of your direct control.
However, this being said, there are workable and financially feasible solutions which could be implemented to improve both the products and services that you offer by next season. But rather than having me and others unload on you on this thread with all manner of bright ideas which all sound good on here, I would like to suggest as I did last year if you would be open to setting up a focus group/brainstorming meeting or whatever you want to call it with some of us NFBC vets out in Vegas. Pick a day (we can use my suite if you want on Thursday), and let's put a panel together of guys who are pretty adept at business in one form or another. Then let's meet to talk for a couple of hours over beers, lunch, or whatever. I'm sure you will leave this meeting with a substantive plan that is workable and can help get at least some of the changes and improvements that we all come up with to happen by next season with virtually no expense to you. If you don't want to respond to me on here, just get back to me personally. I look forward to making this happen. Thanks.

Re: Do not draft with list?
As a complete outsider to this thread who does many draft champion leagues and usually makes his picks very quickly, I think that some of you have I call "center of the universe" syndrome. It's clear that you spend a lot of money here and you want leagues to go smoothly and fit your personal desires. Ok, but there are other perspectives as well and the tactic that is this message thread is not effective and doesn't reflect well on anyone involved, including yourselves.
The obsessive crowd are valued customers but casual players are welcome here too, you know, and NFBC is trying to accommodate all types of players. I don't like slow movers either and will prod others along at times, but creating this message thread to moderate your feelings is the wrong way to go. Greg & Tom do an amazing job with personal service you won't find anywhere else. It's not your place to judge and put them on the stand of whether they are doing a good enough job serving you. It's unfair and selfish.

I swear this is the last time I'll post on this thread. I swear to it.Baseball Furies wrote:However, this being said, there are workable and financially feasible solutions which could be implemented to improve both the products and services that you offer by next season. Mike, we are ALWAYS open to new ideas that improve our products and customer service. I know you want to do a focus group of NFBC veterans over beers and trust me I have no problem with that. Heck, we can all write down improvements that we'd love to see to make every single product and every single promotion and every single technical issue better and trust me I'm all for it. Let's put it together. But making that list and getting the resources to bang out every single one of those items are two different stories. Not only that, but your priorities are likely different than the next guys'.
But sure, I'm all ears when it comes to improving our products. That goes without saying. I just think the focus right now by some people is to make the DCs faster, when once the season starts everyone will be focused on why they can't move players from the UT position after games have started. That's what we're doing now, thinking past the DC season and into the season. We have to be looking ahead and getting those items set up for the teams you've already drafted.
But beers and improvements? Count me in. Making more money, creating better games, having better technical issues with our system? Count me in. Focus groups? Count me in. Getting it all done? I need help there.
Now hopefully we can move on. And if folks really, really, really do want that faster-paced draft that you're advocating then we have that option for the 4-Hour DC where I will personally turn the clock back to 8 hours if that helps. Let's see if there really is that audience that can't get enough of fast drafts out there because the product is available and Tom and I will be hands on there to make that work. Right now it seems like the same 15 guys get into these FAST DCs. Let's fill those up consistently with NFBC veterans and like-minded newbies in March and cruise through these DCs. Good luck all.

Re: Do not draft with list?
NFBC Staff's objections aside, where is the actually list of people not to draft with. I'm not signing up for another one without looking at that list first.
NFBC admin has already talked with owners...Every night from 6-9 EST a guy holds up the draft, while most of the league is waiting to draft. I really don't care if the problem is resolved in round 35, it'd be nice to have courteous owners during the first 20 rounds.
