Shawn Childs Leads NFBC Teams In LABR

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Mar 02, 2017 6:50 am

I'm heading to Phoenix this morning to meet up with my partner Shawn Childs for the 24th annual USA Today LABR AL and NL Auctions. I am the last original owner from this industry league that was started by John Hunt in 1994. The original league consisted of Keith Olbermann, Peter Gammons, Danny Sheridan and a mix of industry writers.

Now we will have 24 teams in Phoenix over the weekend for the AL Auction on Saturday starting at 8 pm ET and the NL Auction on Sunday starting at 8 pm ET. Both auctions will be carried live on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio. Shawn and I won the NL Auction title three years ago, but we haven't been able to duplicate that feat since. Let's see what we can do this year.

We will post our lineups and our strategies after the auctions, time permitting. Feel free to listen in and chime in with your thoughts on our teams. Shawn is always aggressive in these auctions, so watch out. We could be free spending early on again!! :D I've learned through the years to give Shawn the reins and get the hell out of the way! Should be fun once again.

Tune in and wish us luck. Should be a fun time again.

It is Spring (almost) and in the wind comes the words...Tulo!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Thanks to Shawn for joining us on our Sirius show last night. And Derek Carty too. Great info from both as they prepare for LABR this weekend.

We concluded two nights of auctions in LABR in Phoenix and it's time to fly home. It was a great time, hosted by Steve Gardner of USA Today and carried live both nights by SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio. Can't beat it.

I like what we did in the NL Auction League more than the AL, so let's start with the NL. Here's a quick look at our NL LABR roster. This was a league where one owner went $230 on hitting and $30 on pitching, while other owners also spent $200 on hitting and dumped Saves. This was not an easy auction with so many different people doing different things. We knew that was coming, so we decided to be more flexible in this auction if we couldn't get Kershaw.

Kershaw has always been the foundation piece for defending champion Derek Carty and he had the first bid to offer. He threw out Kershaw at $40. Shawn went $41, Carty went $42, Derek Van Riper went $43 and Carty went back in at $44, even though he said he wouldn't go over $40. He got him for $44 and the game was on. After that, the top stars went a few bucks below expected values and the money stayed lower until the mid-tier guys went well above value.

Here's what our team looks like:

C - Travis d'Arnaud $8
C - Miguel Montero $3
1B - Anthony Rizzo $33
2B - Dee Gordon $24
SS - Addison Russell $20
3B - Maikel Franco $22
MI - Scooter Gennett $1
CI - Cody Bellinger $2
UT - J.P. Crawford $3
OF - Bryce Harper $35
OF - Joc Pederson $19
OF - Mac Williamson $3
OF - Franklin Gutierrez $1
OF John Jay $1

P - Madison Bumgarner $30
P - Matt Harvey $16
P - Adam Wainwright $10
P - Shelby Miller $3
P - Archie Bradley $1
P - Koda Glover $2
P - Jeurys Familia $11
P - Raisel Iglesias $10

Reserves:
Jimmy Nelson
Matt Wisler
Cody Reed
Rhys Hoskins
Eric Aybar
Brett Phillips

The closers were so low that we grabbed a pair, the first time we've ever paid for closers in LABR NL. We have a couple of holes, but so do others. The NL is tough.

Where's that great AL auction squad? Can it really be that bad with a pair of aces and four hitters with 30+ HR power?

Honest fact: The LABR AL Auction was the first time where Shawn and I vehemently disagreed on our auction strategy. I thought we were on the same page heading into the auction, but Shawn went off the rails (I thought) when he bid $30 for Yu Darvish and then $30 on Chris Sale right after that. We had $60 on two starting pitchers and very little money to fill in that staff. Shawn liked it but I wasn't in favor of the plan.

We had $30 for our last 13 picks and some teams actually were done before we could fill in those last 13 picks. Shawn felt we filled in okay, but we definitely were riled on SiriusXM for this overly aggressive plan and projected results were not favorable to us. We'll have to see how this works out and I hope Shawn is right, but we didn't see eye to eye on this team. We kissed and made up, but I'm dubious about this team.

Take a look at it and let us know what you think:

C - Yan Gomes $6
C - Alex Avila $1
1B - Miguel Cabrera $34
2B - Brett Lawrie $2
SS - Carlos Correa $37
3B - Yoan Moncada $14
MI - Chad Pinder $2
CI - Albert Pujols $17
UT - Yonder Alonso $3
OF - Jose Bautista $21
OF - Mark Trumbo $23
OF - Carlos Gomez $18
OF - Matt Joyce $6
OF - Billy Burns $1

P - Yu Darvish $30
P - Chris Sale $30
P - Lucas Giolito $4
P - Jose Berrios $4
P - CC Sabathia $2
P - Reynoldo Lopez $1
P - Tyson Ross $2
P - Michael Feliz $1
P - Jonathan Papelbon $1

Reserves:
James Shields, Marwin Gonzalez, Jason Vargas, Mike Cleavenger, Joey Rickard

We punted saves and still had a tough time filling out the rotation. However, this is a trading league and we have so much power that we think trading will be important for us during the year. WE need Moncada and Giolito to come through for us, but this roster is still a work in progress. Does it have any hope? Let's see your feedback. Thanks all.

be interesting to see what the white sox do. do they have to start giolito and moncado clocks? if not- as a sox fan i would say don't bring them up. the white sox have maybe 20,000 fans in chicago while the cubs have 12 million. about 5,000 of the sox fans are very loyal and go to most of the games. so- that won't change. i would just lose 135 or so games, get rid of q and frazier and melky at the break. bring up some double A players and just be awful. with the way the stat boys are running baseball- you don't ever get criticized for losing- just trying to win.

The Cubs were roundly criticized for holding Bryant in the Minors. Same for Pittsburgh with Polanco.
I don't think that happens with the Sox.
Moncada and Giolito could use seasoning and it wouldn't surprise me that they stay in the minors until showing some domination there.
Like the Cub fans of a few years ago, Sox fans will know that the best part of their future team is in the minors.

If Moncada is below average or even average at AAA this year, I wouldn't blame the Sox for keeping him there all year, until a September call up.
Then starting his clock in May of next year.
It's not what his drafters want to hear, but it makes good sense for the Sox future.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
