Rusty Staub

Post by Edwards Kings » Thu Mar 29, 2018 9:38 am

RIP to one of my favorite ballplayers (favorite even though I still call him the "Crusty Slob")!

I think there are a few Mets fans in our brotherhood. Condolences to them and the Staub family.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Thanks for the remembrance and condolences Wayne! As you can tell from my avatar and nom de plume, I am and will always be a huge fan of Daniel Joseph "Rusty" Staub. I had the chance to meet him in 1985 and the pleasure of watching him as a pinch hitter extraordinaire for my beloved Mets from 83-85 when I was a season ticket holder. My favorite memories are of him striding to the plate in the ninth inning and the crowd at Shea going absolutely bananas, so much so that we used to root for them to be tied or down a run so we could see him bat. He is also the answer to my favorite baseball trivia question, "who is the only player to collect 500 hits with four different teams?"

Yesterday, was a very bittersweet day for me and a lot of Mets fans, as opening day is typically the best day of our season, but losing Rusty at still a young age was hard to accept. I have linked to a tremendous article from FanGraphs that chronicles his borderline Hall of Fame career, but also his post-career humanitarian efforts, which are just as if not more impressive. I know there is no crying in baseball, but I must admit to shedding a tear yesterday when the Mets had a short tribute and moment of silence for him before the game. Adieu Le Grand Orange, you will be missed but never forgotten...

As beloved as Rusty was by Mets fans, it's impossible to overstate how much he meant to the Expos and the people of Montreal. Trading for him was the single most important personnel move the team made in their first decade of existence, probably longer. He learned French so he could better communicate with les fans des Expos de Montréal. How many guys do that? When one of these great old ballplayers passes, I Google their old Topps cards and it brings back a ton of memories. Rusty's status as a gourmet chef was the number one factoid on the back of his cards. He was a good man, gone way too soon.
