Two thoughts.....
1. If Papelbon had become Boston's closer one week earlier, where would he had gone in main event drafts?
2. If Figgins had been hurt one week earlier, where would he have gone?
My guess....
1. round 5
2. round 8

Once again I will ask this question.....We all pay a lot of $$$$ to be part of this wonderful fantasy baseball expierence, but why do we draft so damn early? Maybe i am indeed bitter since I spent my 4th rd pick (4.2) on Chone, but I would seriuosly consider not participating next year if the draft is not pushed back closer to opening day

Injuries and lineup changes don't just happen after March 16th. Look how many closers started the year on Opening Day and were not closing at end of year. Two-thirds of them were out of jobs by the end of the season. Wily Tavares got pulled from his job last year during the season. Dan Johnson hit himself out of lineup during the season. Morgan Ensberg was out of the lineup for a while. (etc. etc.) Unless you have a crystal ball that only sees past March 30th, it's a crapshoot.
However, I am sorry about the Figgins and Papelbon news. I drafted Wednesday and got Piniero and Figgins so I feel your pain. Good luck!

Ive got this guy also....Im getting killed
Chien-ming Wang (P) NY-A 3/24/2007
Wang (right hamstring pull) will start the season on the 15-day disabled list, the Associated Press reports. Wang was hurt while sprinting Friday. Wang is expected to be sidelined at least a month. "You're talking late April," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Saturday. "You don't want stuff like that to happen, but unfortunately it does happen. When they happen, you handle it." Cashman said there are no plans to go outside the organization to fill the roster spot. Candidates to replace Wang include Jeff Karstens and Darrell Rasner.

It's unfortunate but it happens..being that Greg and Tom are part of larger association of fantasy sports/info/technology... I think they are very aware of other high stakes leagues along with other conventions going on at the same time in the multiple cities....it's hard when a top pick goes down I do emphathize..but it can happen the first day of the season also...the NFFC has some satellite leagues closer to the start of the season..that might be your cup of tea..I am no way pushing you out of the NFBC but as in life there is always other options...the NFFC and the NFBC will never make everyone completely happy...just look at 2008 Easter week dilemma..I wish you the best

Tampa, I'ts only 2 weeks before opening day, that's basically the norm. And injuries is part of the game and it's not like figgins will be out for that long to be whining like that.

Last season I drafted Eric Gagne, John Patterson, Jonny Gomes, Dan Johnson, Jason Isringhausen, Shannon Stewart, etc.
This season....already....I have Chone Figgins
injuries are always a part of the game, luck of the draw
In favor of keeping the draft as is

I've gotta dump Pineiro twice in my 4 leagues as well. Lower pick, worth a flier

I would say cut Tampa Munchers a little slack- easier said than done to "take it like a man" when those injuries start piling up especially when in his case he did a good job of not drafting injury prone guys. I am sure a few guys will say Wang was risky but not as much as most.
The great news for you Tampa is injuries tend to even out and at least your guys are rehabbing a lot of their time when games do not count.
I would peacefully and with the utmost respect to Cherokee Nation suggest that last year you got what you deserved, you cannot tell me you did not see injury red flags around Gagne, Patterson, Stewart etc.. That was not bad luck but a draft that took some injury risks that did not pan out.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Don't assume that you would have a better team if the draft was closer to Opening day. If and when there are string of injuries, the draft turns out a lot different than expected. Last year and SP's were a good example. Some premium pitching was available in the late 4th and early 5th round....until a string of injuries occured in the days leading up to the draft...there went many peoples' draft strategies.
At the same time, it's not like anyone has an unfair advantage because of when the draft is. Sh*t happens! Welcome to Fantasy Baseball!

you guys are all too damn smart....I ask a simple question and next thing you know you're debating the merits of the draft date!!! And.....no one answered the questions!
I just wondered where they would have gone.
BTW I spent today curling for the first time in my life (yes, I am Canadian). Holy #@($ it is hard!

2. round 8 Friggins is tough for me to call because his current lack of flexibility, mediocre at best BA, and team managements lack of commitment to him (they always seem to be willing to replace him) had him off my lists.
Pablebon, as a closer, would have been in the first tier of closers taken, say 4th or early 5th round. As a starter, he was not anyone's anchor but would generally be a teams number two guy.
Was that curling or hurling. I have know many Canadians who have done both.
I tease because my wife is from upstate New York with a maiden name of "Poissant". Her grandparents were first generation U.S. citizens.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
