Greg Marta Wins Week 8 Prize
One of the most exciting things about each baseball season is seeing a rookie emerge as a big-time contributor.
Rookies, though, aren’t only a part of the fabric of the Major Leagues. First timers also comprise the NFBC and they are not immune to the taste of success by any means.
Greg Marta and John Casavant found that out last week as their Fair Warning team in New York League 8 topped the NFBC field last week with 3,112.5 points.
A mammoth week from Justin Morneau (.400-4-13) led the way offensively while Carl Crawford (.579), Adrian Gonzalez (.500-2-4) and Carlos Guillen (.292-3-7) also stepped up at the plate. On the mound, Scott Kazmir and Livan Hernandez combined for 21 strikeouts while Brian Fuentes had four saves.
“I knew we had a big week because we jumped up over 100 spots,” Marta said. “It never occurred to us that we even had a shot at the best week until I looked at our final results for the week (Monday) morning.”
The pair have been best friends since middle school and after teaming up for a roto league last year they decided to enter the fantasy industry’s biggest baseball competition.
“(We wanted to) test ourselves against the best of the best in the NFBC,” Marta said. “We've definitely made our share of rookie mistakes but we can play in this league, we're comfortable with this level of competition.”
They went to the Javits Center in New York armed with a draft strategy that leaned heavily toward offense.
“We took care of speed in the first five rounds with Crawford, (Juan) Pierre and Carlos Guillen,” Marta said. “We had Crawford No. 2 overall after Albert Pujols so we were happy to get him at five.
“We went with closers in rounds six and seven with Fuentes and (Jose) Valverde. They looked a little bit like reaches at the time be we felt they were really good values. With speed and saves out of the way it allowed us to focus on adding power and value pitching where it cropped up.
“We really felt Kazmir was the steal of the draft as a late 10th-round pick. He hasn't quite lived up to expectations. In the end game we grabbed Kelly Johnson and Tim Lincecum in Rounds 26 and 27. I think they would have been there for another round or 2 but didn't want to leave the draft without both of them.”
Many of those players proved pivotal in the team’s big week. None were bigger, however, than Crawford.
“We're only going as far as he carries us,” Marta said. He's a five-category stud with a nice blend of established track record and upside. We're really excited that he's heating up.”
On the home front, Greg is married with a daughter and works as a marketing specialist for MetLife. John is also married, has two children and works as an account manager with MetLife.

So, how do you split one baseball glove between two guys?
Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.” Isaiah 63:1

Who needs Ebay, they could probably auction the glove off right here with all the guys in this competition.
