Positional Eligibility- 2008

It doesn’t matter what new parameters, rules, or standards are instituted. There will always be exceptions. The rules of baseball have been around for quite awhile and still there are questions and instances where the rules are unclear to the situation, are open to interpretation, misunderstood, applied or not applied(Want to discuss “The Strike zone”?). A call needs to be made. Enter the Commissioner! Not a participant in the league, with the overall best interest of the league in mind, and keeping the playing field level are key. Greg fits the bill. Not a problem there.

Something all incompassing would be great. A universal rule for position eligibility. Here’s some things to think about.

1. There has to be a “Set” of rules. One rule won’t do.

2. Every “position” player is eligible @ UTL.

3. Players who played in the MAJOR’s or were on a 40 man roster during the previous season will retain their position eligibility for the following season for every position they played for at least 20 games regardless of the level where they were played.

4. Those who played in the Majors for less than 20 games @ one position will be eligible at the position the played @ the most AND ties AND their MINOR league eligibility for that season.

5. Those who only “Pinch Hit” in the Majors will be position eligible according to their previous Major league Eligibility.

6. Players who played in the MINOR’s or were on a Minor League roster during the previous season will be awarded position eligibility for the coming season for every position they played @ for at least 20 games regardless of the level where they were played.

7. Those who played in the MINORS for less than 20 games @ one position will be eligible at the position they played @ the most AND ties.

8. Those who only “Pinch Hit or DH’d” in the MINOR’s will only be eligible @ UTL.

9. MLB is the only MAJOR league. EVERY other league, Minor, Independent, College, Olympic, Foreign, High School, et al are MINOR.

10. The Commissioner will rule on player eligibility prior to the Annual Draft as he deems nessessary.

11. Additional positional eligibility will be awarded during the season when a player has played a position 10X’s which he was NOT previously eligible for.
