Gino Yu Wins Week 14 Prize
The end of the draft is often where the men are separated from the boys in a fantasy baseball draft. It’s often where sleepers are found and championships are won.
And last week, it was the End Game which helped Gino Yu have the best week of anyone in the NFBC.
Strong weeks from players such as Ryan Braun (.367-4-7), Josh Fields (.310-3-6) and Jonny Gomes (.391-2-6-2) helped Yu’s The Professional team in Las Vegas League 2 lead the way in the NFBC last week with 3,093 points.
Yu also got six wins from his pitching staff with Nate Robertson pacing the staff in strikeouts with 10. But the key, Yu said, was the standout play delivered by the youngsters in the starting lineup.
“All of our young unproven hitters had a breakout week,” he said. “We got lucking on drafting (Hunter) Pence and Braun and FAAB pickups Gomes and Fields also enjoyed huge weeks. We also swiped seven bases with an unlikely contributor in that category – Jonny Gomes – providing two of them.”
Yu was happy to see his offense have a strong week given how his team has struggled with power since the draft.
“We fell into the trap of taking Johan (Santana) in the first round which completely went against our plans,” he said. “As a result, we ended the draft deficient in power.
“We thought our pitching was strong but a few guys like Jared Weaver, Jason Jennings and Clay Hensley haven’t panned out yet. If I only knew who Tim Lincecum was on Draft Day.
“Luckily, some of our late-round fliers have turned out to be gems in Pence, Braun, (Curtis) Granderson and Kelly Johnson.”
Yu is single and lives in Los Angeles and sells sports cards and collectibles for a living. For finishing first last week, Gino wins a Kenji Johjima autographed bat courtesy of Upper Deck Authenticated.
