NFBC CHAMPION PROFILE – DAN KENYON

Accomplishments-4th overall, 1st in Las Vegas 2, 1st in Shawn Childs League, 1st in 250 Satellite League, 2nd in Content League.

1. What were the keys to your championship season?

Patience. A quality that can work both for and against a fantasy baseball manager.

Using the pinpointing method at the main draft does not allow for patience. At the 2007 draft I went in pinpointing Prince Fielder and Nick Markakis. I felt these two players were destined to make huge strides over their previous year. I was ready to draft both of these players even if it was well before their average draft position. Pinpointing is a good system, but only if one is 100% sure that the pinpointed players will play well above the general consensus expectations. Patience is not needed.

Drafting in the two spot, I selected Alfonzo Soriano with my first pick, Hanley Ramirez dropped to me in the second round and I was off to a great start. The number one drafter had selected Albert Pujols with the first pick, I gambled that Fielder would still be there in the fifth round and was rewarded. Markakis was taken well before his adp in the eighth round. Dan Haren and CC Sabathia anchored the pitching staff, while Andy Pettitte, Oliver Perez, Billy Wagner, and Jeremy Accardo all contributed significant stats. Shane Victorino, Kelly Johnson, Casey Kotchman, and Aaron Hill were all good late round additions.

While patience, or lack of, worked for me at the draft, it came back to haunt me during the Management segment of the season. Gil Meche, Kevin Millwood, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Ricky Weeks, and Matt Capps were just a few of the players that were dropped from my roster before they went on to have productive years. These players and others were dropped during a two or three week slump and I wasn't patient enough to ride it out and probably cost myself a lot of money in the overall.I was ecstatic and lucky to win Las Vegas 2. It featured veterans John Zaleski, Steve Pletikin, and Lance Turbes and was a dogfight till the last week.

Benjamin Franklin once said that 'Patience is a virtue'. He also said that 'Patience is a passion tamed'. Both quotes apply to the management of my 2007 team. I will make sure to have patience in my bag for management of my 2008 team.

2. How long have you been playing fantasy baseball/fantasy sports?

I've played fantasy baseball for 15 seasons. The last three with the NFBC have been the most enjoyable and has taken fantasy baseball from a hobby to a passion.

3. Personal - single/married/occupation/where do you live?

My patient wife, Mitzi, and I reside in Grand Junction, Colorado. Our daughters, Valerie and Mandy, and grandsons Cole and Wade are the other passions of our lives.
