biggest bust of year

Post by Gordon Gekko » Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:58 am

I wasn't going to say anything, but heck why not, I'm sure weveryone will hear about it soon enough.

I heard a rumor than shandler has bj upton OUT of his top 25 OF's. Personally I think shandler is somewhat correct in his projections, as a low contact rate can really hurt a players value (see ryan howard). however, I don't have upton as low as shandler. He's the 23rd OF on my list.

The crushing blow to owners will be to those that select him early, like is being done in the 2nd rounds of the mock drafts (shandler says upton is 8th round material). Could be the biggest bust of the year given nov/dec adp.

More than an game or two I think my friend! :D

And I agree with Quahogs. If I draft BJ Upton, he will most likely be my starting second baseman not as an outfielder.

Actually, Shandler has him very close to last years numbers with a slight drop off in HR/RBI. He also predicts a BA adjustment. Most of this is a reflection of his age (23), low contact rate (could improve as he matures) and 2007 high hit rate (lucky). All in all a very reasonable projection. And an attractive pick in the right spot, especially for a second baseman with good speed.

Will he make it to the 8th. No. Too much hype.

Will he pay dividends as a second rounder? You be the judge.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Mark, havent spoken for a while. Hope all is well. I too have to disagree. There may be some BA adjustment, but as a 2B he will be a monster. I think he is really going to come into his own this year after just scratching the surface last year.

Jeff hey Jeff!

ummmmmm, forgot about the 2B eligible. i guess that would move him up, but how far? as for your last statement, couldn't that be said about numerous "young" players?

Absolutely bro, no doubt. I just think that he is one of those guys that is going to live up to the hype. 24-82-22 for 476 AB's sure is a nice start. And as you said that 2B eligibility surely gives him quite a bump up. He is no way an 8th round pick, in my humble opinion.
Anyone who believes you forgot he was 2b eligible should go by some swamp land in South Florida.

You ask yourself who has the chance to be a first 3 pick in 09 who is not a first rounder in 08 and Upton jumps out at me. I personally like him late 2nd round but I know some really bright folks do not.
People can get caught up in your act and lose sight of one thing. You are very, very prepared on draft day. I also think you do a great job of looking at the right information also.
