Check those e-mail boxes for invites. I was in the Shawn Childs draft last night. GREAT TIME. A lot of great owners. Entry fee was at $350, so you know that owners were giving it their all. Some feedback on it.
Russell Martin, taken early in the 2nd Round. I know a lot of you may think this is a bit early for Russell. But he is a stud. I am sure the owner knew that he wasn't going to get him at the end of the 3rd Round, so he got him when he could.
Here are some reasons why I like Martin.
Age: 23
Contract: $375,000 He has not gone to the bank yet. He is HUNGRY.
2nd Half Stats: Disaster! He had zero stolen bases in September. He got caught stolen more than actual steals. Dodgers collapsed in Sept.
This guy is a competitor and he is going to redeem himself and he is going to have 6 months of production.
For any of you who are lucky enough to go to Spring Training in Florida. You are not going to find a player who works harder than Russell. You are going to find a lot of players who can hit 400' HRs off of 80 MPH fastballs. But Russell, is not going to be outworked. At age 23, I see 20 HRs and 30 SBs from Russell.
He does face the Padres 18 times. That's good for 10 SBs right there.
I had the 7th pick last night. In the second round, I had to make a choice between Beltran or Fielder...What do you do? I had a minute thirty to decide. I had a lot of great owners behind me, licking their chops (Childs, Gillis).....30 seconds left.....What do you do???? SHEEEIIT I had no idea Beltran and Fielder were going to be there for me this late. I went with Beltran. I had some sleepers later in the Draft for 1B. Childs ended up with Fielder, the 9th pick of the second round.
Moral of the story is, Mock Drafts are great! But there is no greater experience than getting into a draft and being put into a position where you had to make a decision in less than 90 seconds. My suggestion, do yourself a favor and sign up for some Satellites. No greater experience than owners having money on the line and Drafting.
My Team: (I made another donation last night)
Utley
Beltran
Ordonez
Atkins
C Young (AZ)
Sheffield
Wagner
R Hill
Cain
Everything was going pretty well until the 10th Round. I had another decision to make. Pedro....or....Sheets?? I can't believe I passed up Sheets in the 10th round. I went with Pedro. Come on Sheets, get hurt again so I don't feel bad all year.
Later in the draft, I got Hermida, Cuddyer, Votto.
Pitching, I picked up BJ Ryan late in the draft. Toronto is paying him a ton of money. I just need him to be healthy for 5 months and I will be all right.
I got the Unit, O Perez, and A Miller. 3 Lefthanders in the NL. I really like Miller this year.
That is all for now.
Like I said, do yourself a favor and sign up for some Satellites.

[/QUOTE]No wonder Shawn does so well in baseball.
Did I miss a memo or something about Fielder? I was shocked to get him at #15 in the Mag league and now I see this. Fielder has more upside than Howard and less downside IMO, yet he is consistently taken later......surrounding cast aside, WHY?
BTW, KIMO, the core of the team isn't that bad.

Kimo whats up, i thought you had a pretty good draft .Your top ten is a great start, you need to post your whole team to get the true ratings.
Some tough choices you had [sound like yoda]im a big Beltran fan but would have taken Fielder .I was on the phone with Shwan and kept saying Fielder will go next about eight times to finally he was up and said i have to take him.[about 3 seconds]In the last pick in the 4th and 1st in the 5th round i passed on M Young for Putz. Hafner at pick 60 i had to take but passing on Young another ss didnt go for a while.
Also took Myers over Liriano , that was a close one.Ran out of time in the 1st pick in the 9th round and took Hoffman.By the time i got up again about 7 pitchers i wanted were gone.[you took Cain and Pedro] Saves didnt go as fast as i thougt, you never know with saves.
The draft was a lot of fun.

Michael Young's off year last season must have stung you too.
I'll try to keep my head neutral on him...but he was pretty mediocre last season when we both put a lot of faith in him in the NFBC main.

Like I said, do yourself a favor and sign up for some Satellites. [/QUOTE]Your draft looks incredible. Dominant looking offense, GREAT pitcher picks from those spots. Your offense from the first 10 picks is big time (even though I disagree with Beltran over Fielder) the fact you can still bust out a pitching staff of Hill, R.J., Cain, Pedro, Perez, Miller and closers Wagner/Ryan. Without seeing the rest of your draft, so far it looks almost perfect.
Honestly, I can't believe a lot of those guys were still available at the spots you got them. Especially considering those guys playing I would assume are top NFBC guys.
Prince Fielder that late? They gotta be out of their minds to pass on him. He's got a real chance to go .310-50-130 in my opinion. And I have a feeling he'll have a better year than Howard, especially in the BA department.
Was it a 12 team league by chance?

. Childs ended up with Fielder, the 9th pick of the second round.
No wonder Shawn does so well in baseball. [Wink]
I realize Childs is a good fantasy player, however, you take what the rest of the owners leave you. What better gift than Fielder at that spot. The owner taking almost the full 90 seconds to decide between Fielder and Beltran; sounded like a 5 second decision...
However, I agree, that owner has not made a donation, pretty decent draft from what I saw.
BTW, I run an NFBC type league with some decent players, i.e., Jesse Herron, Ken Magner, and Gene McCaffery and was disappointed when I needed one more owner and Jesse invited Shawn and he declined...LOL; regardless, it is a tough league and great warm up for NFBC in Vegas.
I have never really posted here much, but I always enjoy reading this site.

I'm in 5 NFBC leagues at the moment. I also don't like to do any other leagues before Vegas. I have been doing the early January draft the last few years to get me motivated to get ready for March. I think it is far enough away from the main event where you have to make adjustment to your game plan. In the three years of satellite leagues, I haven't played in one prior to the main event.

I think that means that Childs owes us one. Maybe we'll GET him to share a few of his Superfecta picks on the Thursday before we start drafting.
