LIVE Game Observations

Post by KJ Duke » Tue Jun 03, 2008 7:41 am

I don't get to a lot of games, but you really do get a different view and feel for players and managers when you do. Thought I'd start a thread for these in-person game impressions. I'll be going to all SD-CHI games this week and will post anything of particular interest. Would also love to see anyone else post comments as they experience live games over the course of the season. (Hippo - I know you make a lot of games ;) ).

At the game at Petco last night, had good seats close-up to see my ace in action. Zambrano is the most exciting player in the game. He gives up 3 in the first after looking pretty upset over not getting what looked like a real good pitch on an 0-2 count, later in the count a short pop-up to left which Soriano blew - by taking two steps back on - dropped in front of him for a hit which led to a few out-of-focus ABs against Z and 3 runs. Z settles down and shuts them out for the next 4 innings but doesn't last long because of a ~35 pitch count in the first inning.

Meanwhile, on the bases he gets a key two-out, stand-up triple to drive in a run - and he was motoring like he wanted an inside-the-parker. He later gets another sharp single up the middle. And in his final AB, for which any other pitcher would have been pinch hit for since he was coming out anyway, he lays a perfect drag bunt down the 3B line. Kouz was expecting it and is there quickly - but Zambrano was burning down the line faster than anyone that looks like him should be able to and beats it out, leading to a big inning. I really think he could out-run half the guys in baseball that steal 20+ bases a year. He's hitting 366 on the season with a 902 OPS. He just creates excitement. Too bad he can't play everyday.

As for the Padres, i think Adrian Gonzalez is turning into a perennial superstar. He has a perfect slight upper-cut swing and is right on the ball so often, with the strength to hit it out anywhere, its scary; one of the last guys in the NL I'd want to face if I was pitcher. I think he's moving into the same class as Berkman and Utley.

I actually like watching BP and watching pitchers play pregame catch. In May I went to a RED Sox/Tor game and I was amazed at the movement Litsch had on his throws just playing catch(so I picked him up) and he's done well. I also noticed Lyle Overbay(owner of ZERO hr's at the time was driving the ball in BP for several HR's and decided to keep that light hitting 1B in my lineup and now he has several HR's. Does it mean anything? who knows, but at least it was an interesting observation.

There has not been much conversation in this thread including from myself considering I go to my fair share of games here in Chicago. It got me to wondering; Do the people in this event watch (TV or in-person) a lot of baseball or is it mainly just looking at box scores at the end of the night?

I know I have the MLB package and watch games almost every night. I also go to games. But I have a friend that is an excellent fantasy player (baseball and basketball), but he hardly ever watches. He is 90/10 split analytical to anecdotal evidence.

Does “seeing means believing” affect our judgment? It can to an extent for me. Not that anyone wants him, but I wouldn’t take Craig Counsell for any reason because I hate to see that bat-waiving-over-his-head stance of his.

How much (if any) baseball do you really need to watch to do well in this game?

Alexei Ramirez is going to be a "player"...watched him during BP and fielding before recent Rays game. Loved the way he sprayed the ball all over the field. He'll be a player to be coveted next season.

Any of you Chicago fans see Dempster pitch last night? I picked him up as a free agent and can't believe how well he's done from a fantasy perspective so far. Is his stuff that good or is he using mirrors?

Pete
OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.

[/QUOTE]I watch mainly the Braves and am an admitted homey. I notice things in the game, but do not feel the exposure is enough to act on without additional research. But I admit to avoiding players who I have seen acting like dirt-bags during a game or are dirt-bags in their personal life. Not an absolute rule, but I cannot recall ever having the likes of Bonds on a team of mine.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Pete The thing that has surprised me the most is his conditioning. Last season Dempster would melt away on humid July and Aug afternoon's in Chicago. Last night was fairly warm and Dempster was able to go all 9 with 110+ pitches. As a Cub fan I'm not 100% sold yet on Dempster, but I am very happy to this point.
