Post by Scott Kelnhofer » Mon Aug 25, 2008 3:03 am

Fred Zinkie's "Feng Shui" team of the NFBC New York 8 league used a diversified offense and some stellar pitching to capture the overall scoring title for Week 21 of this year's National Fantasy Baseball Championship.

Zinkie's team posted a combined batting average of .313 for the week with 10 HRs. His two catchers, Ramon Hernandez and Kelly Shoppach, combined for 5 HR and 12 RBI, while Twins outfielder Denard Span hit .321 with 7 RBI.

Meanwhile, Zinkie's pitchers tallied 3 wins and 7 saves. His starters had a combined WHIP of 1.06 and 60 Ks. A.J. Burnett had 20 Ks in 15 IP.

Zinkie's team currently resides in third place in NY8.

Fred Zinkie is the Week 21 winner

A little balance can go a long way in fantasy baseball. Fred Zinkie’s Feng Shui team in New York League 8 proved that conclusively last week.

Zinkie’s team used a balance attack to finish first in the NFBC last week. Zinkie's team posted a combined batting average of .313 for the week with 10 HRs. His two catchers, Ramon Hernandez and Kelly Shoppach, combined for 5 HR and 12 RBIs, while Twins outfielder Denard Span hit .321 with 7 RBIs. Meanwhile, Zinkie's pitchers tallied 3 wins and 7 saves. His starters had a combined WHIP of 1.06 and 60 Ks. A.J. Burnett had 20 Ks in 15 IP.

“I actually won this week without any one player standing out,” Fred said. “Almost all of my hitters had good weeks but none had an amazing one. Players like Mark Teixeira (3 home runs), Kelly Shoppach (3 home runs), Mike Cameron (2 homers and 2 steals) and Johnny Damon and Randy Winn ( a homer and 2 steals each) all contributed and the rest of the hitters did something right at some point during the week.

“I didn’t have one dominant pitcher either. A.J. Burnett got 20 strikeouts but his ERA wasn’t great and I picked up 7 saves between Jensen Lewis, Joe Nathan and Francisco Cordero.”

Zinkie’s team is in third place in New York League 8. What’s been the secret to his team’s strong showing thus far? A little tip from NFBC founder Greg Ambrosius.

“Last season when I was doing a satellite league I remembered Greg saying that in-season roster moves are the key to winning these leagues,” Fred said. “I didn’t believe him at that point but I definitely believe him now. I used eight players last week that I picked up since July 1 and they all were positive contributors. They have helped my team move from eighth place in my league at the All-Star break to third place right now.

“My draft results were just OK as many of my early round picks have been hurt at various points this year (Ortiz, Bedard, Lackey, Damon, McGowan). Many of my later picks panned out and kept me in the middle of the pack until I could find some waiver wire replacements. I definitely spent too much on pitching this year by taking six in my first 11 picks, two of which are out for the year.”

Fred lives in Newcastle, Ontario with his wife Sarah. Both are huge Toronto Blue Jays fans “which means that we’ve become very accepting of third place finishes,” Fred said. He has been playing playing fantasy baseball for 12 years and this is his first year in the Main Event.

“I also joined the fantasybaseball.com team this year, writing news reports and the weekly AL Report,” he said. “The guys at the site have been great to me and I find that writing about baseball everyday is keeping me more up to date with the moves around the league.”

For finishing first last week, Fred wins a replica jersey courtesy of FansEdge.com.
