NFBC Eligibility Lists For 2009
We will list all of the players eligible at each position by the end of this month and list them here and on the NFBC main page under our rankings. We're still redesigning the site, but will have those links updated shortly.
There are a few folks who will start the year as UT-only because they did not qualify at any position under our rules. They include:
Utility
1. David Ortiz Bos.
2. Jim Thome WSox
3. Travis Hafner Cle.
4. Kendry Morales LAA
5. Gary Sheffield Det.
6. Rocco Baldelli FA
7. Frank Thomas FA
8. Matt Stairs Phi.
9. Cliff Floyd FA
10. Jose Vidro FA
11. Craig Monroe FA
12. Eric Chavez Oak.
Morales played 27 games with the Angels last year, but not more than 20 at any position. He played 12 games in right field and six at first base. He will be UT-only until he plays 10 games at any position in 2009.
Chavez played 23 games in the majors last year and only 15 at third base and 8 at DH.
I have made an executive decision on Pablo Sandoval and will give him 1B eligibility to start the season. He played 41 games with the Giants last year and played 17 at first base, 12 at third base and 11 at catcher. He is projected to start at third base and with that much service time I believe he deserves to start out with a set position. He played the most at first base and will qualify there to start the 2009 NFBC season. Once he plays 10 games at third base, he will have dual eligibility.
If you have any questions on any other players, feel free to post them here. Any prospect who didn't have any service time in the majors last year would naturally qualify at the position he played the most in the minors last year. I'll list the eligibility lists as we post them on other threads and update them right here.

NFBC Eligibility Lists For 2009
Hey stache,
Your dropping the ball on this one. If you going to make Sandoval 1st base eligible then Morales should be an OF'er. You need to be consistent. You still have a few months left to make the right decision.

hey cork,
why is it a problem to live with his "executive" decision???? it was obviously thought out and a decision rendered for whatever reason....you have plenty of time to adjust your cheatsheets....remember its january!!!

NFBC Eligibility Lists For 2009
Just pure logic. Morales 12 games in RF-UT only.
Sandoval 17 games at 1st- 1st base elg. WTF?
Why not make Sandoval CATCHER eligble while were at it. If the rule is 20 games last season then it should be 20 games not 17. I have to wonder if Sandoval was a 39 yr old journeyman if he'd be 1st elg...I bet not. The fact that he will most likely become Catcher Eligible at some point in the season makes him have some serious fantasy value. The fact that you don't have to tie up a UT spot to draft him proves this.
Just looking to make it right.
Another question to ask is why did their need to be an "executive" decision in the first place? If the rule is 20 games then that is rule, is it not?

Another question to ask is why did their need to be an "executive" decision in the first place? If the rule is 20 games then that is rule, is it not? Why would anyone call me "hey stache?" Sheesh.
My thinking is that Sandoval played 29 games at the corner infield position last year and will likely be drafted there for 2009. He played 17 at first base and 12 at third base and the Giants said he will start at third base. He's not expected to catch and if he catches 10 games then he can qualify after that. You're right, I could have left him at UT, but I think allowing him CI eligibility on Draft Day is consistent with how his eligibility should be and probably will be in many other leagues/games.
Morales will play first base this year and falls under our rules like everyone else: 20+ games played (27) and none over 20. No need to make a decision to allow him to qualify at a position he likely won't play at this year. Let him earn 1B eligibility.
Now you know and now you can adjust your Cheat Sheets accordingly. Good luck.

Good luck.

stache is in reference to your awesome porn stache.
Your still not being consistent. If the rule is 20 games per position then that should be the rule. Why make an exception for anyone? Why have rules if we aren't going to follow them?

You are correct, I am making an exception for Sandoval. Our rules allow that because each year there is going to be someone who came up late in the year, played more than 20 games total and less than 20 at any position and be in a different boat than a September callup who played 19 games total and gets eligibility at a position he played 7 games at. We figured that out and wrote it in the rules that I can make exceptions if I deem necessary. I'm making this decision and letting folks know 2+ months in advance.
"Why have rules if we aren't going to follow them?" You have it all wrong. I am following my own rules. I'm making the exception, just like my rules allow. It's written there in black and white that exceptions can be made. Now we're on the same page.

NFBC Eligibility Lists For 2009
I was thinking the same thing Greg was 17 games at 1B and 12 at 3B would make him a CI. I don't think stats can make a player just CI so give him 1B because 17 of those 29 games at CI were at first. Also he did not play DH like many other guys that fell short.
Greg does a great job with the NFBC and if he feels a guy should be 1B, 2B, 3B or whatever so be it. He has earned my trust and many others and he is always open to making changes if a lot of people have a problem with something.

Since you openly admit you make up your own rules. Can you please make Sandoval a Catcher for this years draft.
Thanks

NFBC Eligibility Lists For 2009
For those who haven't read the Rules section, here is our eligibility rule. Please note the bolded section:
6. Position Eligibility: The NFBC will use the following position eligibility rules in 2009: a) Players who played at least 20 games at any position in 2008 will qualify at that position for the entire 2009 NFBC season. Players who play 10 games at a new position in 2009 will be eligible at that position after they have played for the 10th time there this year.
b) Players who played less than 20 games total in the majors last year will be eligible at the position they played the most games at, not including DH or pinch-hitting.
c) Those players who only pinch-hit in the majors in 2008 will be position eligible according to their minor-league games played status in 2008. They would qualify at the position they played the most games in the minors.
d) Players who played all of 2008 in the minor leagues will be awarded position eligibility for 2009's NFBC season based on the most games played at all levels in the minors. STATS will determine that one eligible position before Draft Day and that will determine that players' status for 2009 once he is called up to the majors. Those players who only pinch-hit or DH in the minors will only be UT-eligible.
e) Players who played 20 or more games in the majors last year and didn't play 20 or more games at one position will be deemed UT-only eligible in 2009 unless otherwise designated by the NFBC Commissioner. The NFBC Commissioner will rule on player eligibility prior to the draft as he deems necessary. Those eligibility lists are final.
f) Additional position eligibility will be awarded during the season when a player has played a new position 10 times which he was not previously eligible.

I think it would have been better to leave him as ut to start the year. If you change his elig. it looks as if you would make him eligible at the position that he most likely to play or just leave it alone.

I do have to agree that giving Sandoval 1B eligibility and not Morales as an OF seems a little weird. They both played over 20 games but neither qualified by playing 20 at one position. Neither even played 50% of their games at a position so why one and not the other?

Why not end all this mess each year and change the 20 games down to 10?
The problem for most IMO is that the rules here are so different from the other leagues we play in.
Just change it to 10 and end all the BS.
Why is it 20 in the first place? It doesn't make and sense on some of these guys.

I've updated this position eligibility list and will continue to do so as we post the rest of the positions this week. We'll also get these on the home page next week as well. If you see anyone we are missing at a position, let us know and we'll update it here for official use in all NFBC contests.

He is projected to start at third base and with that much service time I believe he deserves to start out with a set position. He played the most at first base and will qualify there to start the 2009 NFBC season. Once he plays 10 games at third base, he will have dual eligibility.
i wonder how much his adp will be increased with the prospects of dual elgibility? if he has a sizzling spring, will he go in the single digits in any drafts?

Why not change 20 games to 10 and end all of this confusion?
Does anyone have this confusion with other leagues they play in?
Sorry, I just don't understand why it has to be 20 and why some are exempt, and others not.
