2008 NFBC Champion Profile - Mark Srebro
1. How did it feel to win the league title?
Another year, another title. It did feel good for hard work to pay off.
2. What were the keys to your championship season?
Pouring in countless hours and using them effectively.
3. Was there a point in the season when you began to realistically believe you could win the title?
Probably about two months before draft day.
4. What draft day strategies worked out the best?
*Knowing how to contract a quality team.
*Identifying players who have fallen too far AND acting on it. Mauer in the sixth and Hamilton in the 7th come to mind.
*Having (strong convictions)
5. Did any not work out the way you planned?
Draft day is won in February and early March. Everything went according to plan.
6. How did FAAB work for you?
I spent over $600 on the biggest bust EVER in fantasy baseball history. So, this is an area I can improve in.
7. How was the competition in your league and the overall event?
Competition in my league was good at the top. There was a Shawn Childs disciple who wound up with AROD, C.Quentin, C.Lee and B.Morrow on his team. If someone told me after the season was over that a single owner had all those guys, I would've said they were gold-carded for a league title.
The competition at the top of the overall event was fierce, as expected. Chicago has placed a couple people at the very top the last two years. I’ll be watching closely this year to see if that trend continues. If it does, that means Chicago has more weak drafters as compared to other cities and I may have to adjust my 2010 draft plans.
8. How long have you been playing fantasy football/fantasy sports?
Feels like a lifetime (and I’m in my 30’s).
9. Personal info - married/single, where do you live, what do you do for a living?
I work full-time in water delivery and part-time in newspaper distribution.

Proverbs 29:23 - A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor.
Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.” Isaiah 63:1

9. was answered as expected. Talk about me and leave my wife and kids out cause that would be taking away from talking about me. Every time I see a post from or about GG I think of the song by Toby Keith, I wanna talk about ME!!! Humility is not a trait this man possesses.

In my real life, I am a generous, kind, and humble person. Anyone who knew me away from here, can attest to that.
In my fantasy baseball life, I am a little different. While I am generous (given away 3 free NFBC teams in the last two years), I view this as a business. My competition is all of you. Doing anything other than trying to crush my competition (all of you) is a losing proposition. Stop bellyaching and try and stop me.
And yes, my 2009 Main Event draft is being won RIGHT NOW AS YOU READ THIS. Contrary to public opinion, it’s not won on draft day.

For some reason I feel the way Shawn Childs attempts to crush his competition is much more respected than the way you go about doing so. Being competitive, confident, and successful doesn't require one to lack humility.

How many Championship's have been won from each of the other cities during the long storied 5 year history of this event?

I actually prefer the arrogance schtick.
If I want to see political correctness I'll turn on "Punky Brewster".
I think what soured me on Lou Holtz when he was coaching Notre Dame were the pre-game press conference when they had Cupcake U on the schedule and Holtz would be blathering on about how "these guys are a dangerous team, they have athletes, anything can happen..." blah blah blah.
Spare me. I enjoy Gejkko's arrogance, and I would encourage people who don't enjoy it to grow a thicker skin and study harder this year.

Two thoughts:
Gekko is great for these boards. If you do more than roll your eyes and chuckle at the arrogance then I for one do not understand you.
I do think anyone who thinks business at the highest levels is about "crushing the competition" needs to turn off the reruns of Dallas tell JR Ewing and Michael Douglas's character in Wall Street to be quiet because they are ready to join the real world.

ya gg- be more like mj and tiger and urban meyer and federer etc. my take- the reality of competition is fine- see the afore mentioned. the verbiage of competition is a waste and a misnomer. as far as business in america- sadly chest is correct and as more and more businesses shut off the competitive light we will keep sliding down the slope of mediocrity.

GG did have some good quotes from the movies and every one is spot on as it relates to fantasy baseball.
"In my book you either do it right or you get eliminated."
"Read Sun-tzu, The Art of War. Every battle is won before it is ever fought."
"It's not always the most popular person who gets the job done."

Every time I read a GG post I feel like I'm leaning against a fence at an inner city pick up game. All of the obvious talent is overshadowed by the relentless need to talk about it. GG would have been perfect for the NBA, if only he were taller.

"He may be a little cocky" Mudster I would never question a man that lives in the area of the The Chicken Ranch. I'm sure you know a little cocky from a big cocky.

Mark won (another) league. I do not think the point of this thread was to shout out what hacks you off about GG posts. It was a shout out to give credit to one of our fellow owners for succeeding in the difficult task of winning a NFBC event.
Congratulations Mark. Well played.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Mark - Congrats again for your outstanding performance this past season and likely in advance for 2009. Also, thanks for your words of encouragement last year as I fought my way up the standings still several spots behind you.
See you in NYC 4 weeks from now.

OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.
