MLB- Make Mine Vanilla

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Apr 18, 2009 3:59 am

I touched on this in an earlier thread and wanted to expound on it.

Political correctness has spread like wildfire. Permeating almost every group in the USA, save for maybe the Ku Klux Klan. As personalities dull down in baseball it is hard for kids, as well as even adults, to find a player they like beyond what is shown on the field.

The 60's were a great time for this. Muhammad Ali's "I am the Greatest!", my dad, who was very racist, would cringe each time I brought his name up and insist that I call him by his white name of Cassius Clay. Which was confusing for me, being that I never knew any white kids named Cassius.

The sports Magazine cover with the headline, "There isn't a pitcher alive who can get me out!"- Roberto Clemente. It wasn't cockiness, Clemente just told the truth. As Will Sonnett would say, "Ain't braggin, just fact". Today, Albert Pujols with the same headline, would be belittled by his peers, even though it would be true as well.

There was also a magazine cover that had the headline "I want to be the first $100,000 singles hitter in baseball"- Pete Rose. Rose did just that. Talking about money and salary to the press is taboo now, unless its a contract ploy.

Babe Ruth after hitting a mammoth home run said that he had to stand at home plate and admire it, knowing the pitcher would throw at him in the next at bat, and then saying "It was worth it". Please bring that back.

Al Hrabosky turning his back to the hitter and then whirling around like the hitter had just said he had sex with his Mom last night. A joy.

Ozzie Smith doing backflips. Loved it. By the way, out of youthful exuberance, Tim Lincecum did a back flip in the Giants locker room and was quickly admonished for the risk he took.

I mean, cmon, I don't want to see a closer dancing and juking his way to the mound accompanied by his theme song of "Can't Touch This!"

But Major League Baseball should not be like McDonalds, where we (at least I do :D ) know everything on the menu before we get there.

Just my take.

Good stuff, Kevin.

I don't think much of Ozzie's managing style, but he would be one of the few people invloved with MLB that I would love to hear at a banquet.

Patrick, I haven't seen Balfour do that. Was it once or has he done it more? If so, kudo's to him!

Last night I went to see a Little League game. Eight year olds. The left fielder made a catch on, for with anybody the age of double digits, would have been a routine fly ball. That was the first inning. In the 4th inning, he was still showing the CFer how he did it and is probably still smiling at this moment. Priceless.

30 home runs, 13 strike outs. The 56 game hitting streak will be broken before that ratio is ever touched.

Hard to say about DiMaggio. He played in a generation of when men were men. Drinking, fighting, de-pantsing the rookie, all perfectly acceptable. The cheerleading, the exaggerated gestures, Hell, even high 5's probably would have turned Joe D's stomach.

A totally different game. Back then, players would get on the top step of the dugout to razz a pitcher. Some "bench jockeys" were so good at it that they occupied the last spot on the roster mainly for that purpose. The only time they talk to the opposing pitcher now is if they think a pitch got too close. Too bad.

Quite often, although I think it's usually after he's consumed a few Fosters.

The first time I noticed it was towards the end of last season....he struck out the side during a very "important" part of the game and stuck his hands down to his side and sorta "bowed up" and swung his glove towards the visiting teams dugout and yelled "Sit the f-k down!" as he angrily strutted off the field. I thought, there's no way I just saw what I think I saw....but he's done it numerous times since. He actually did it to Jermaine Dye the other night as well, so I guess he's keeping it in his repertoire this season.

I will say, I've noticed he doesn't seem to say it in the direction of the player like he used to....I guess if he is yelling into "space", opposed to directly at the player, it saves the suspensions and fines.

Tug McGraw, upon signing a $75K contract, said that he'd spend 90% of it on women and Irish Whiskey, and the rest, he'd probably waste. When asked if he preferred grass or AstroTurf, he replied he didn't know, since he'd never smoked AstroTurf.

I'd like to see somebody try to say something along those lines today. Ya gotta believe it'll never happen...

Gotta love that crappy evolution of driving out the character with dollars.

I agree...Saturday Morning cartoons SUCK...so bad my two boys won't even watch.

Spongebob is awesome. Simpsons too.

We have this crappy evolution...yet TV can say damn near every word but the F-word and no fines.
