Okay, I just sent each of you an e-mail about the Strategy story I want from each of you. Mainly it's about a strategy to win this year's NFBC title or any league title. But if some of you want to talk about your strategy for this league, that's fine too. What were you targeting this year or what seems scarce? Let's have a mix of short strategy columns for this first issue.

I've sent an example to each of you. Please write this 60-word feature by Thursday at noon and email to me and Tom. Thanks all. Oh, and good luck tomorrow night. This should be fun. Gentlemen...please Cc me on these E-mails to Greg & Tom.....

...and Greg, if you could make this draft viewable on MDC, I think that would be entertaining....thanks.

Also, some commentary would be appreciated.... :D
[/QUOTE]Geoff told me last night that he can make this draft viewable tonight and that he would post how to do that here on the boards. I just emailed him to remind him of that and he will post that information here soon. Come and enjoy the festivities my friends!! :D

Hey guys, we'll probably only go with nine Draft Strategy writeups after all. So contrary to my email yesterday, make any writeup you do 675 characters, not 375. That will give you a chance to elaborate a little more. So 675 characters on a Word document and send it to Tom. Thanks all.

Again, feel free to write about your own Draft Day strategy or even a strategy based on this year's draft. A mix of both will be good for this section. Thanks all.

Is this your way of showing me the door? :D I got three of your emails back tonight saying they are being delayed. No idea why. I'll have Tom forward an example of the story we need from you by Thursday. We'll get this to you, but the Paranormal ghosts are keeping my emails from you. :D

I tuned in for a bit last night.

You guys are boring :D

Besides Sack molesting kids and a couple of others going Missouri/Missouri it looked like pretty standard stuff.

Any surprises from the drafters?

Unless Cliff Lee did away with the "one year wonder" tag...and now every player who has a breakout year is for real.

Finally had the chance to look through the draft results. Some interesting picks even at this early juncture: Beltran 3, Hunter top 5, Beckham 5, Bartlett 6, my biggest question mark Cantu 7, Bruce and his 220 avg in 8, Webb with bum sh in 9, I know Homer Bailey looked good for 3-4 starts in Sept, but 13th?, Maybin who showed nothing in Fla or AAA 15th rd?

Hey these guys are the upper crust of the NFBC...so Im probably missing the obvious. One would think they are good because they catch both the obvious and the less-than-obvious. Nobody said this was easy.

Not that I disagree with you on some of the players you called them out on.

This group alone has won close to $1 million just from the NFBC.

-------------------------------------------------

That is pretty impressive.

Is this league being played as a regular league? Or was it for print in the magazine only?

NFBC Money Leaders Draft On Tuesday, Nov. 10th

Post by Edwards Kings » Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:58 am

Very interesting. I like to break drafts in to thirds, so looking at the first 10 rounds exclusively, the average mix was seven offensive players with three pitchers. Twelve of the fifteen teams went that route. The average appeared to be two SP, one CL, two CM, three OF, 0 – 1 C, and 1 – 2 MI. There was a lot of commonality in the mix, but certain strategies still stuck out.

Two teams had four pitchers in the Top 10 and two other teams opted not to draft a closer in the first 10 (though both had one by the end of the 12th). BTW, third place finisher in the Rookie of the Year sweepstakes Tommy Hanson went way higher than Happ. Take that, Phillies! ;) The fact that Hanson did not win ROY makes as much sense to me as President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work during the first twelve days of his Administration.

Catchers, after the early Three M’s run (Mauer 1st, Martinez 2nd, McCann 3rd), did not generate as much positional moxi as I thought it would. Only one team opted for two catchers in the Top 10 and six teams did not draft a catcher in the Top 10 at all. One team must think OF is thin as they drafted five in their first 10 picks (though it looks like it could be as much a value draft move as two of the OFers were former 1st Rounders not drafted in the 1st Round this year), while one person locked up his UT spot by picking four CM in the Top 10. MI looks like a wait and see proposition as it looks like no team drafted more than two and eight drafted only one.

Accepting of course certain FA will jump ship, the NYY lead all teams with picks with nine (three pitchers and six batters). Five teams (ANA, ATL, BOS, LAD, and PHL) had eight players chosen. San Diego is not generating much early interest as only Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez were picked in the first ten rounds. Eight other MLB teams had three players chosen (CLE, DET, KC, OAK, PIT, SEA, TOR, WAS). Only one team had three SP chosen in the first ten rounds (ATL thank you very much) and TEN teams had no SP taken in the first ten rounds (BAL, CHC, CIN, CLE, MIN, OAK, SD---they miss you Jake Peavey--,TEX, WAS). Which 15 MLB teams have closers not worthy or closer-situations unresolved this early such that no one picked a reliever from them? ARI, BAL, CHW, CLE, DET, FLA, MIL, PHL, PIT, SEA, STL, TB, TEX, TOR, and of course WAS.

Two other teams besides the Yanks had six batters taken (PHI and TB). Likewise, two other teams besides SD had only one batter taken (KC in Butler and SF in Sandoval). Those three teams also were the only ones not to have at least one OF taken from their roster.

One draft does not a trend make and much will change by March, but still it is interesting how each year we consummate prognosticators change ever so dramatically who we draft where. If you are looking for bargains in Rounds 11 through 20, several “have-not” teams are already settling to the bottom of the Fantasy barrel. Anyway, just avoiding a ton of work today so I thought a little content might be nice, even if it is the intellectual equivalent of an “Archie” comic.

:D

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

NFBC Money Leaders Draft On Tuesday, Nov. 10th

Post by crazytown » Wed Nov 18, 2009 8:12 am

Regarding Mauer, I was thinking more of the position he plays and especially new stadium, outdoors in Minn., and no artificial turf. I guess Piazza was the last catcher taken in the 1st round.

More comments please. And Q, any insight from you would be appreciated.

What about Mauer late 1st and Martinez early 2nd. Any thoughts there. Or am I stealing ideas and posting them?

There can not be any question that Mauer is first rounder next year. Did anybody dominate a position as he did in 09? His two question marks are his health as an injury prone c and the sustainability of the power. With the latter concern, even if he drops back to 20 ish HR, you are still getting a dominant player. With the former...there is no such thing as a risk free investment in this game.

Russell Martin was picked in the first round (15th) by one team in 2008, though his ADP was lower by a couple of rounds.

The last time three catchers project to go nearly this early was 2007 when the same three were picked in the same order (Mauer, Martinez, and McCann) at ADP #34, #45, and #55 respectively. Martinez came through (78 R, 25 HR, 114 RBI, and a .301 BA) OK but the other two disappointed, given their high slot. That year, the next catcher was taken in the 9th.

I predict the same thing this year. Two of the three will produce OK for a catcher, but not produce to their draft slot.
