Most inside the park home runs were hit during the dead ball era. Now, it is such a rarity, that it is almost certain to be on SportsCenter. However, Greg Gagne of the Twins in 1986 and Richie(I like calling him Richie, because he preferred Dick, which did suit him better at the time, but I digress) Allen both hit two inside the park home runs in the same game. Gagne's was in 1986, Allen's in 1972.
"I keeck touchdown!!"- Alex Karras describing kickers excited about a field goal.
No reason to put it here other than the fact that it still cracks me up to this day.
Cal Ripken is most noted for his consecutive game streak. But, Ripken also holds another MLB record. Ripken grounded into 350 double plays. It takes Albert Pujols over two years to make that many outs! Ivan Rodriquez is the active leader with 307. Although some would question whether it is right to call Pudge, active. Brad Ausmus is 12th on the list. Good God, doesen't he make enough outs without double plays?
Not a lot of people know this, but Barry Bonds struck out 200 more times than Babe Ruth. I got nothing after that sentence, just something most would not know.
Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn threw over 500 pitches in their 16 inning complete game vs. each other which was won by a Willie Mays home run.
Now, we have Joba rules.
ARod will join Mays and Bonds in the 600 home run, 300 stolen base club this year.
Makes Willie look pretty good.
Only one modern day player had 3,000 hits and less than 100 home runs. Who was it?
The answer will be at the bottom of the post.
Mark McGwire hit over 500 home runs during the last 14 years of his career. During that time he hit ONE triple. Only three players have hit more than 400 home runs and had less than 10 triples.
McGwire, Mike Piazza, and Jason Giambi.
Rickey Henderson stole over 1400 bases. Only nine other players have stolen as many as 700. Rickey, while being a great player was also known as a 'cruiser'. Any chance Rickey had to not hustle, he was quick to take advantage. The one stat that bears this out is that with all that speed and in a role as a leadoff hitter, Rickey only had 66 triples during his career. Brooks Robinson and Ron Santo had more triples.
Mel Ott stole 89 bases during his career without being caught. Although I do not know the criteria for a caught stealing at the time.
If Manny Ramirez hits 30 home runs next year, half of the top 10 home run hitters of all time will be linked to steroids.
The answer to the question above-
Rod Carew is the only modern player with 3,000 hits and less than 100 home runs.
