What do you think of this $125 Satellite Team?

This was my first NFBC draft. What do you think?

RP Joe Nathan MIN R5 P11

RP Trevor Hoffman MIL R10 P5

RP Luke Gregerson SD R25 P11

RP Michael Wuertz OAK R28 P5

What do you guys think of this team? I had mocked a decent amount of times before to try and prep. I didn't have any position goals as far as draft position but wanted to maintain balance. Recent injuries/concerns to Nathan, Martin and Gordon have not helped but I feel fairly solid.

Picks-1-10 - I was happy to get Fielder at 11 and then to get Crawford as a nice value on the return. I liked Pedroia at the time but now wonder if the power from Cano would have been more helpful at that point. Took some solid values that I liked pitching wise and filled the OF with a couple of solid veterans. Overall, I feel like I didn't jump on the hot players as they flew up the board but got some veterans at values that I liked.

Picks-11-20 I got a lot of corner (Cantu, Gordon, Blake) and middle (Furcal, OCab) help in the middle rounds, as well as getting a 2nd catcher (Pierz) an OF I liked in the 15th (Reimold) and some pitching (Correia). It might have been better to come out with a 5th solid starter in these middle rounds.

Picks-21-30-I filled out the rotation (Latos, Zito and Hammel) here, got an OF I like late (Scott) and some solid RP (Gregerson and Wuertz) who I like for the ratios and possibly saves if Bell is dealt.

Overall I'm a little short on power but like the balance of the other hitting cats. The pitching has a lot of pressure on Beckett, Hamels and Oswalt with the endgame pitchers being a mix of vets and some upside. How do you think I did overall? Thanks
Looking forward to my first NFBC season in 2010.

Did you check the latest news before drafting?

If not, it could work out, who knows, these guys could become bargains.

I haven't seen the cat.... but I'm definitely looking for one. It's gotta be out there somewhere.

Pedroia at 3.11 is really good value!

Overall not bad, but you are correct...you are going to be short on power, and those recent issues are gonna hurt.

Nothing you can really do about that.

Looks like a middle of the pack team, but who knows? :D

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Got to love the Fielder and Crawford start and i like Pedroia.Like a lot of the value where you took guys like Hamels,Oswalt,Tori, and Reimold late 15th very nice.Would have liked more pitcher maybe in the Martin pick.Still if the pitchers hold up i like it.

Yeah, I've gotten that comment from a number of people. I needed to get one more starter somewhere in the rd 10-14 area to make the pitching good enough for this team.

I really like the Fielder/Crawford combo out of the first two picks. The guy who drafted at the 5 slot got a Braun/Ellsbury combo which was nice too.

The recent injuries will hurt obviously, but I thought you did a solid job in the draft. You might have some problems in the back end of your rotation, but I think you drafted a pretty balanced team. Good job.

Jermaine Dye? Retirement awaits and that one looks like a bad pick.

Even though I'm a Phillies fan I avoided Hamels like the plague this year. Something wasn't right with him last year in the playoffs.

I like the Zito pick late in the game.

Predition, middle of the pack at best.

Philly Phantom whats with the name...were you a big phantom fan when they were in philly? I work a block from the now Adirondack Phantoms...We do business with them and they put our logo on the ice...Phantom games are fun it has been a while since we had AHL here. Also I am a die hard phillies fan in baseball.

Dye had been going in the 250 range in the drafts I looked at so I thought 300 would be a good value for him.

I'm not a Phantoms fan but I live in the Philly area and wanted a team name that would be ominous.... I'm thinking the Philly Black Cats might have been more appropriate at this point.

I have another NFBC draft coming up in a couple of weeks and I see a number of people predicting middle of the pack for this team. What do I need to do differently to crack the upper echelon?

Thanks

Philly,

The best advice you will ever get is this:

Don't pick guys (like Jermaine Dye) based on where they are going in mock drafts. As I said, it looks like he's retiring, so getting him at 300 compared to 250 won't do you any good. He's going to give you zero's. Don't even look at a mock draft. Do your own research, pick guys you think are going to do well, regardless of where others are picking them.

Good luck to your team! Maybe you will prove me wrong.

TA,

That's a really good point. I'll chalk it up as a rookie mistake with the thought that I could have gotten 20/80 from him when he signed. I thought the value at that point trumped everything but being 35 and not having a job was really the most important point.

Thanks again!
Looking forward to my first NFBC season in 2010.

I think you just got destroyed by injuries - Gordon, Nathan, and Martin.. the 3 major injuries of the spring and all on your team... terrible luck because it was a very solid team before that happened...

Philly,

I don't agree with Toxic Assets. Dye's been in talks with different teams, and a deal to his liking hasn't gotten done yet. He might be a starter somewhere or, worse, a reserve, but I don't think he's retiring. You might get your 20-80 season out of him yet. I don't think so and 20th rd might be early since he is unsigned but I don't think you're going to get a zero with that 20th rd pick.

Nice team overall, agree with others about the power but nothing that some fine tuning can't fix in free agency. No reason you can't win yourself some $ with this team. Good luck.
