Solving The Free Agent Time Delay Problem

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Mar 31, 2010 5:42 am

Okay, one of the suggestions we received from our NFBC players in Las Vegas was to have all free agents for each position displayed on one page. Shawn and others were adamant about that. The IT department worked hard to make that possible and that feature was available when the FAAB debuted yesterday.

Unfortunately as you can see, loading every available free agent at every position takes A LONG TIME!! And of course that's not ideal for you. So we are going back to Plan A.

We originally had pages set up for each position and will go back to that. But we will try to extend that first page to 50 or maybe even 75 players and if you sort by category within that page (let's say you're looking for steals or homers or saves) the top 50-75 players will appear. That should help out and avoid the long lag time inbetween.

We realize that having 250 players at your disposal on one page is best, but for most players the paging with more players appearing on Page 1 with the function to sort by category seems like the best solution right now. I hope you understand and we'll continue to do our best to handle this situation and improve it as the season goes on. Look for this change within the next day. Sound good?

Good news Greg - thought: don't take suggestions during open bar in Vegas ;)

Unless I missed it there does not seem to be a search function in the free agent page either. That would be a time saver. . . can that be added?

Having to scroll through pages makes it difficult to find players. With all 1B's on a page, for example, I can just do a browser search for a player, or cut and paste.

Also, with players listed on multiple pages it actually takes more loading time ... rather than waiting 10 seconds once, we may have to wait only 5 seconds, but we'll have to do this 3-4 times. How is that heplful?

Most people already know this, but some may not...

Holding down the "Ctrl" button and pushing the "F" button brings up a "Find/Search" popup, which allows you to search that way if need be.

(first or last name)

Hitting enter a second time, looks for the next one down the line.
I strongly agree with KJ (I was just about to post that comment myself). Is it possible to have a choice of seeing all or just 50-75 based on a box the user selects?

Let me second (or third) the option to have a "show all" button.

I understand wanting to cut down on server load and query time for the first screen load, but for those of us that don't mind waiting being able to see all batters and pitchers is a huge win.

Thanks.

I think cleaning up the list should be first priority. I cant believe curt schilling, randy johnson and richie sexson are or on 40 man rosters and all these guys ive never heard of.

Anything that doesn't give us 10 seconds load time is preferable to me. And the load time is there any time you load a new position also.

Thanks for all the hard work Greg!

Differing opinions. You'll just have to make the call, GA.

I'm only concerned for this week that FAAB WORKS, and soon so those who are traveling have time to enter bids properly. We can iron out preferences later.

While im at it. The drop player should defaut to a blank instead of first player on team list . Once you make a bid or pick a player to drop it should auto save, this would save lots of time. Same thing with the amount bid. It should auto save instead of hitting a button everytime and then having to redo everything if you load another page witout saving.

Rosters should be auto-saved as well.

Somebody will forget to hit submit.

I'm sure John and his team are reading this thread and will do what's best for a) making sure time is saved for this week; and then b) fine-tuning the FAAB system as we go forward. That was my suggestion in today's meeting.

If we can have a link to Show ALL and one by pages, that seems like the best answer. I'll see if we can do that. Then we have the best of both worlds, right? KJ, do you agree with that?

Depends on the default Greg. If I have to wait for the short page to load, then click "load all" every time, it just makes the wait even longer.

If I can set this as a personal preference (or even have it default to what I did last every time), then I'd agree we'd have the best of both worlds.
We both know who to ask about this! :D I think John worked until 4 or 5 this morning, but he should be awake by now and ready to make a call on this. We'll find out what we can do and if what you say above is the solution we'll see if our man John can find a programming way to make it happen. Sound good?

The list should shorten signifantly after this week right? 25 man rosters plus drops after this week right which should be 300 or so players.
Dough and Kenny - I agree as well, I emailed John early this morning on both of these issues and the player tracking feature that we used to have in STATS.
Another issue is that apparently you have to save your list before scrolling to another page. This should be fixed. Now when adding conditional bids to a list and then scrolling to the next 50 players the condtional bids disappear unless I hit save list. This also weighs in favor of having all players on one page.

Heels. Was just about to post the same thing, a HUGE PIA, I hope this gets fixed.

First you have to scroll down find your first player hit bid, then scroll all the way back to the top and hit edit list to be able to continue adding cond'l bids then once you get to the bottom you can't even click next! You have to scroll all the way back to the top hit SAVE then go all the way back to the bottom and click next!

I'm not even done now I have to click edit list again to continue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and so on everytime I switch the page.....

Greg I'm not a complainer not even close but I'm really teetering on the edge with why all this wasn't taken care of weeks ago. I really really hope this gets fixed before Sunday.

After doing a sort by position or by category, there isn't a button to hit bid.
