"Lastly -- in regards to stats. I want everyone to know that we've received probably 20-30 different variants of how people want stats laid out on this site. It's amazing how many people want it to look differently -- but none are consistent."
This line really frustrates me. There is a general frame of how "most" people like to look at stats. Box scores have been around for so long and have not been changed for a reason. You can literally take the top 5 fantasy baseball website stat services and easily mold it into an efficient, easy to read service. It's not THAT hard.
What's amazing to me about this entire mess is they are trying to reinvent the wheel. Is there not one general layout that can be generally accepted?
The Live Scoring page is such an inefficient laid out scheme, it's mindboggling how bad it is. I question whether there is any kind of input from someone who has actually played fantasy baseball before. It just seems like I have to press so many buttons to find out simple information regarding my team as well as my competitors.
I know from looking at Yahoo StatTracker that they have done a lot of things right. Shouldn't that be a possible starting point?
From the first look on StatTracker, I can see Standings on the left in smaller print, then next to it has a big layout of all your "live" players from catcher on down to pitchers. The totals for the day are at the bottom (duh) .
It automatically defaults to the "Today" stats. One touch of the button I can see season stats for every single player (bench included). Simple, easy. 1/10 of a second load time.
One touch of the button (from the same page), I can see every single team's up and down points for the entire day (the team at the top with the most points gained for the day down to the bottom). No pressing 3 buttons to get information like the nfbc setup, it's all one button (with almost zero load time) away from all the information that's needed. It's very efficient, very easy to look at, and extremely fast.
On top of that, on the same front page of StatTracker it shows the score of every single game including who's up, how many on-base, and any new information "run scoring double". I can click on any of these games and get even more information, live box scores, number of pitches. I can even click "Full Box score" and from there when I click on a player's name it will immediately take me to their full profile.
Why are we constantly trying to re-invent the wheel? Let's take something that's working and make it BETTER?
I think first what has to happen is there needs to be a small focus group of experienced fantasy players who are willing to work with the tech guys throughout the season to get this right. I'm afraid the current scheme will need to be totally scrapped. It's THAT bad. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
At this point, it would be nice to have a sticky of all (if any) improvements are made to the stetup during the season to show there is a real desire there to make this the best fantasy baseball experience. Right now, I have serious doubts.

I don't think Walla would be happy if you gave him a chocolate cake, a stripper, and $100,000....
The cake would be too dry.
The stripper wouldn't be attractive enough.
The bills wouldn't be crisp enough.

I'll be honest, some of you sound like petulant little girls.
So there was a little transitional problem and we all had to deal with some minor workarounds.
WERE YOU REALLY THAT HARMED? HONESTLY? HOW?
I've known Greg & Tom for years, just getting to know Ryan a little (I even got to see him sweat as an auctioneer... )
I can appreciate we all want everything seamless and perfect at all times, but really - were you all that 'damaged' by this 'hardship'? You guys are all hammering the hell out of Ryan and Co. for what, exactly? They've heard and understood they need to do better. They've responded to fix the problems.
Sure, it would be nice if they knew it ahead of time and many people were here all winter telling them they were going to fail and you were right. They should have known. Ok, point made, good job you win a gold star. Now it's being/been fixed. Do you really think this is cool having first Greg, then Tom and Geoff and now Ryan debase themselves in front of you?
Either you will WITNESS the product getting better week-by-week or you will choose not to invest your dollars in this contest. Everyone knows that.
Now, maybe Ryan deserves all of this. I have no idea, but I also have no reason to assume that he's being insincere and I've never witnessed anything but honest reaction from him.
Yes, we're putting in a lot of money to play these games, but a fair bit of it comes back at us. It's not like you're paying thousands of dollars in entry fees for the software.
I'm confident the gang will get things fixed. If you have a new point to make, by all means make it... that's great. Ask Ryan pointed questions if it helps you understand how it's being dealt with... that's cool.
But, really, reading most of this lashing out is just embarassing as a participant. I'm not even remotely pissed off at NFBC, Fanball, Ryan... and I have a hard time believing that a big percentage of the players are raving mad with purple veins popping out of their necks like is being portrayed by the angst displayed in some of these posts.
Feel free to make good points and ask good questions, but bank your 'WE the People' speeches... you don't represent me with your raving.

Here is my problem: while I agree with many of the posts, and dont quite understand how 1000 other websites have perfectly well functioning systems AND NFBC had perfectly well functioning sytem up until this year, that is not my gripe.
A week ago Sunday night, I bid for and won Gorzelanny for 12. I woke up Monday and inserted him into my lineup since I had a few SPs go down. I later learned that he was removed from pool due to not being available in some leagues.
Now leaving everything else aside, everyone in NY League 4 presumably had access to Gorzo, as I understand it. I won him. And the fact that I dont have the benefit of his week 1 stats, is going to bother me all year, because this is not a $50 office pool league...this is the big time.
I understand why the decision was made to remove Gorzo, but that doesnt lessen my feelings of being gypped.
I dont have anger or seek to blame anyone, but I will say that this is something Id expect from a first year home league. I say this not out of anger or disrespect, but it will be difficult for me to plunk down big money again.

Great post. Cut through the clutter of the 30-40 random suggestions about laying out stats and just take what the guys at Yahoo fantasy baseball or CBS Sports fantasy baseball are doing and more or less replicate it. Those live standings/stats interfaces are miles ahead of the weird-looking live stats/scoring interface on the NFBC pages now. No need to re-invent the wheel when it's already been invented and is running smoothly elsewhere.

Overall this has been an inconvenience, but not a disaster. I appreciate the responsiveness of Greg et al in trying to get things fixed. In fact, this is the easiest FA bidding software I've used (as long as you don't drop Arod in the process).
ESPN fantasy baseball was down for two weeks at the beginning of the season a couple of years ago -- and their idea of a fix was to run the season without the first two week's stats. Compared to that, Fanball looks great.
The most serious problem has been the "fixing" of the FA pool without precise communication about what is being done, which leads to problems like Gorzelany. I would like to suggest that any further deletions to "clean up" the FA pool only occur on Monday and Tuesday (with normal additions based on call-ups locking 7am Sunday). This week I bid on Pedro Martinez. He was in the pool (I doubt he was drafted and dropped), and I was not sure what would happen with the bid. There should be clarity that if he's in the pool as of a cutoff time, that he's free game, even if he shouldn't be in the pool by the rules. If you take players out late in the week, someone who put in a bid before he was removed can claim him (unless the software has been modified to prevent this).

~Dyv While some can afford this more easily than others, many really have to stretch their budgets and/or max out their credit cards to make this happen. This is, after all, disposeable income in a recession. Add that to the fact that this is the social event/entertainment package of the year for many. It's difficult to have multiple hobbies, a full-time job, a family, and still have enough time required to compete in the NFBC. With all of the time and finances required, it's reasonable to have high expectations. When those expectations are not met, or worse yet fail miserably, what solution do you recommend? It's important to convey the grievances. Not only do the issues and problems need to be pointed out and discovered, but those not in the know need to know just how important certain aspects and expectations are. I'm all for being mature, professional, and patient. That said, I see nothing wrong with speaking your mind and asking a couple of tough questions. We've paid for that right. Could we expect the necessary change and improvement through silence? Doubtful.

The point is, clearly, the issues are understood and you gain nothing further by asking people to prostrate themselves under the guise of 'WE (the players) all want that' - fact is, I sure don't and I'm guessing others are satisfied the minor issues have been and WILL be dealt with promptly and fairly.
As for people straining their budgets to make this work - that would be truly sad and horrible if true. This is a luxury item, if it's not that for you and you're compromising your lifestyle, your future, or the safety of your financial situation then you're completely making a horrible decision for yourself and your family and you are, frankly, a fool. (Problemgambler.com ?)
AND on top of that, you SHOULD have high expectations and they SHOULD be met. Of course, this is exactly what Greg, Ryan, Tom, Geoff and everyone else has said and committed to and fixed or are fixing. Right? No, seriously... right?
And yet, listen to you... 'fail miserably' you say - is that really what happened? Can you tell me what part of the system has failed you miserably, exactly? Not just failed, mind you - but the exaggerated 'miserably'?
Fact is there were a few minor glitches, all were repaired easily and I don't know of any 'miserable' negatives other than a little wasted time and some minor frustration while we waited for solutions?
So, tell me, Scott - what is the exact damage or harm you've received so far? Can you quantify it?
Thanks for helping a simple guy understand,
Dyv

I can totally respect that. [/QUOTE]In you opinion, Dyv...could the baseball launch have gone much worse and how? (assuming the programmers actually could program, and the folks at the draft tables didn't lose the draft results.)
It's all getting better now, so I understand about looking forward and agree with you. I have high hopes.

lol, what a funky question... could it have gone worse and how ?
Sure, it could have gone horribly worse if firm action wasn't taken to fix the problems and communicate reasonable solutions. The allowance of people to rectify their rosters on Monday based on NOT having knowledge of their FA results was a 'save' of sorts since it made sure nobody was harmed in what they wanted.
Had Greg & Co not taken action to resolve the issues and patch out acceptable resolutions then the rollout could have been far worse.
As it was, the glitches were fixed in about 12 hours and the rosters were allowed to be set.
Credit solid commish work imo.
