Zambrano to the Bullpen?

Sure he could resign, but if he's fired instead he gets the rest of the money owed to him on his contract. I don't know how else to explain this bizarre move.

You have to question a guy who cant appreciate Paul O'Neil and recognize a class act.

Can it belong before the Mets send a first round draft pick and cash to the Cubs to acquire their manager?

Zambrano actually could flourish in the role. He has always had the, 'Hey Mom, look at me' attitude. Perfect for a stint in the bullpen.

If Zambrano does stay in the pen, I think it’s very likely that we see Carlos in the closer role by mid-May.

This situation is very similar to the Kerry Wood case a couple years ago. I think that Wood’s ego coupled with the fact that he was the most senior Cub and face of the organization forced Piniella to make Wood the closer. He certainly didn’t earn it in the spring of ’08. If he hadn’t, he would have been left with an unhappy, uncooperative player.

Does anyone think that Zambrano is going to be happy pitching the sixth and seventh innings of a game the Cubs are losing by 5?

Dough,

I was blinded temporarily by reading an adjective used to describe John Grabow as "suitable".

I'm okay now.

I'm with you in agreeing that at the moment it makes their pitching staff as a whole better, but I like KJ's angle as well stating this will allow Z to be more flexible in waiving his no-trade clause, then blowing it all up, and having Sandberg start from as close to scratch as possible in '11. Of course, true scratch will never occur until Soriano decides he doesn't want to play baseball anymore!

Of course, true scratch will never occur until Soriano decides he doesn't want to play baseball anymore! If I were Ryno, I'd be tempted to turn it down. The Cubs are a franchise that missed their shot. Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano, their cornerstones (such as they are), have had their best years.

On whole, be it Zambrano starting or relieving, their staff is mediocre at best.

If I am the owner, here is what I do-

1. Fire Jim Hendry

2. Put out feelers on Zambrano. Gauge the interest in Ramirez and Lee and put out the word that both could be available at the trade deadline.

3. They say there is a sucker born every minute, I guarantee that some GM has a dim enough bulb to covet Soriano. Put him on waivers and hope that that assumption is correct.

Heck, somebody in the NFBC owns Ross Gload! :D

Sorry, Gload owner. So sorry...

4. Have the new GM study what Minnesota and Oakland has done in the past and what Seattle is doing in the present and to use that as a guide for the team that will be built.

5. Only after all that is done, would I offer the job to Sandberg. Sandberg will have already managed most of the kids that would be filling the roster. A better scenario for him.

Of course, I'd be surprised if ANY of this happened, here's why-

1. The firing of GM's has a political correctness about it. Most GM's are fired during the off season.

2. Trading Zambrano, Lee, or Ramirez would send a signal to Cub fans that Management has given up. Little does Management know that Cub fans have already given up.

3. Soriano's feelings would be hurt once he knew he was put on waivers.

Why should Management care?

I don't know.

4. They're the Cubs. They'll fall right back into the old trap of a big splash to show fans they're 'trying'.

5. They'll offer Sandberg the job and say take us as we are. Sandberg will have to weigh hometown sentiment and common sense.

Just my take.

Two things Dough. They may be the Cubs, but they're not the Tribune's Cubs. Big difference I think, of course we'll find out.

Secondly, if you think there's any chance Sandberg would turn down an offer to manage the Cubs, you don't know Sandberg.
