I knew most of the hype/dollars were going towards Holland but thought John Ely has a better chance to succeed in LA. I thought Ely with 3 straight quality starts to his credit compared to Holland's 1, mixed in with him pitching in the National League and 1/2 his games in LA, I think Ely has a better chance to succeed going forward. Also a nice bonus of a 2-start week. Hope $80 was worth it. We'll see.
Yes, Holland had great peripherals in AAA but he was disastrous last year. 8-13 with a 6.50 e.r.a. and 1.70 whip covering 138 innings, so brutal. Seems like most have a short term memory problem.

Ely is filler; his stuff is short of mediocre. Holland is a legit top of the rotation prospect. Holland wasnt good last year, but he also was really unlucky.
Come back in August and see how this one works out.

It's crazy....we aren't even a quarter thru the season and in my league 50% of the budgets are gone already. More than half of the teams have blown well over $500 already and a few of them are down to just chump change. Bidding goin on for Holland for example is just not smart. It's not like the kid has not been in the majors before and therefore turns into some Ryan Braun of the pitchers, he was pitching last year and sucked. What changed so much to warrant 20-30 percent of the budget? Did Arlington become Petco Park?
Reminds me of the Cecil hype...
On other news, I am giving Rich Harden ONE MORE CHANCE....after I sent him to hell on Friday. It's either him vs Baltimore or Lilly in Texas and... I'm not even thinking about playing Pineiro in STL despite Mr. Groundball being great for me this week. They know him too well there

Once the novelty wore off, Laura and Jack realized their son was not merely pitching in the major leagues, but excelling. Ely pitched a combined 12 2/3 innings over his next two starts, allowing three earned runs and no walks while striking out 13. All this despite a fastball that rarely broke 90 mph.
What Ely does possess is four quality pitches -- four-seam fastball, curve, changeup and cutter -- that can be thrown for strikes at any moment.
"At this level, when you can get an off-speed pitch over when you're behind in the count, it puts a different thought in their mind," Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "All of a sudden 88 to 90 is a lot sneakier when they have a second or third pitch in the back of their mind."
The night before Ely made his major league debut against the Mets, Andre Ethier was asked if he'd gotten a chance to see Ely in spring training.
"Who?" Ethier asked.
John Ely, tomorrow's starter, he was told.
"I was just focused on today, but I don't even know who that is," Ethier said. "John Ely? I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but I don't know who that is. Who is John Ely?"
Ethier had a different answer when asked about Ely on Tuesday.
"He's definitely handled himself well and showed he belongs," Ethier said. "He has good stuff. Anyone can tell he's not overpowering. It's not like he throws 95. But he knows how to pitch and locate. I always love watching Greg Maddux-, Tommy Glavine-type guys who just go up there and paint it like that, throw pitches to spots.
"He knows how to do it. He's got a long way to get in the same category as those guys, but he's that type of pitcher that mixes it up and throws a lot of stuff at you."

Two weeks in a row we lost out on good young rookies by $10 or so. This week we lost John Baker to the DL and went $145 on Max Ramirez. Other options were ugly and holy crap fugly!
Next closest bid was $10.
Sigh...
In my league, Ely went for $156 - next closest bid was $56

I agree wholeheartedly. There is something about the fastball that enamors people but location and poise are something that is much more valuable in my opinion. Interesting to see how things shakeout but I see Ely as a better option right now.

Each week I read this thread and am to embarrassed to reveal my over paid free agent pick ups. I entered 5 NFBC teams this year, a (classic, 500 sat, Super, and two DP's) with the intention of learning, but also hoping to break even. The hardest part of being a newcomer is the FAAB process. I suck at it.
In my classic league, which I'm currently fourth I had to play all week without a SS and MI due to the injury to cabrera from Cleveland and the injury to Hardy. I had no back ups. So today I went ahead and got Eckstein for $68 with no other bid and Renteria for $57 with the second bid being $5. I also picked up Hinske for $26 with no alternate bids. This is a learning process.
On the bright side, I'm no worse than the middle of the pack in most leagues and am actually winning one. I have Strasburg on the way in 4 of the 5 leagues, if he pans out I could be alright.
I've dropped players already that I paid over $100 for. Hopefully one can overcome these mistakes.
Good luck everyone......

Coglan for 16 in a 15 team league,what a steal.
I would think closer to 100 as he's the hottest hitter in baseball the last 10 games.

I agree with Eddie. This is a serious gift. I have him in both leagues and thankfully didn't drop him. He is just hitting his stride and if he can replicate his SB's from the Minors, $15 will be one of the better FA bargains this year. Congrats.

Coghlan and Maybin are both going to lose time with Stanton coming up.
Rolling Dumb FAAB Pickups Thread
I think Maybin will lose the most time. However if Coghlan struggles he might sit against lefties. I just can't see Freddie derailing his most productive hitter over the past 10 days. Coghlan still struggles against lefties but he has earned a few extra feet of leash. He looks like a completely different player at the plate. I think he is primed for a great second half.

Probably right - for now at least. Coghlan needs to keep hitting though because a Coghlan-Ross-Stanton OF aligmnent is horiffically bad defensively. If he slumps, it will be very easy to slot Maybin back in CF and move Ross back to a corner position.
If Fla. drops out of it, I could definitely see them trading Ross.

I guess he could sit againest a tough lefty once in awhile but being this hot he should keep playing.I would be more worried if i was a Maybin owner.Actually trading Ross would solve the outfield promblem.
