When making the pick, I figured it was an extreme long shot if Patterson ever saw the show this season, but pulled the trigger anyway....
I remember thinking....well that was a throwaway pick. Now I'm thinking, maybe not.

My CPatt Story:
I was living outside of STL at the time - I believe it was 2004. I jaunt up to Wrigley for a weekend to catch the Friday and Saturday Cub/Cards games. CPatt is off to a rockin, all-star type start that year.
I wind up drinking a few too many Old Style's and head across the street to the souvenior shops (across the street from Cubby Bear!). Feelin no pain, I pluck down 250 for an authentic CPatt jersey. Feelin proud as hell, I wear it all day Saturday and for the drive home on Sunday. I pull into my driveway about 3:00 that Sunday afternoon listening to the game on the radio and - BAM - the clumsy bastard trips over 1st base and blows his knee out. Never the same again (as if he was much to begin with!).
It's the small things like this that makes being a Die Hard Cubby fan that much more difficult to swallow!
Needless to say, I'll pass on potentially rostering him this weekend!

Usually each spring I like to buy a Cub jersey. Sometimes I go retro (Sandberg, Williams, Banks), and sometimes current players. Anyways, a couple years back I decide to go with one of the young kids. So I’m looking on EBay and I see an authentic Corey Patterson jersey for $59. Seems like a good price and not many people are riding the Patterson bandwagon, so I get it.
Now a couple months go by and Patterson is having a great start to the season. I haven’t even worn the jersey yet and they are starting to sell for a premium due to the small supply of available jerseys. So I take my Patterson jersey down to a vender friend of mine near Wrigley and he offers to buys it off me. We haggle back and forth and finally settle on $150.
We talk about the Cubs season for a minute or two after the sale and I’m just about to leave when this dude comes stumbling out of the Cubby Bear. My friend says “Watch this”
“Stan” starts layin’ it on thick, telling the guy that Patterson is a lock to be the Cubs center fielder of the future, that this jersey is hot and he’s only got one remaining, and that it’s usually $279 but if the guy can do cash he can have it for $250. Done deal. In just a matter of minutes the jersey is sold twice. I’m happy with my money and “Stan” is up a quick $100.
Well, the Cubs are having a good season and I decide to use my extra cash to buy some scalper seats for the Sunday game. I get first row behind the first base dugout. Great seat. Unfortunately, not a great game. The Cubs are losing and it’s late in the game. I’m one too many Old Styles into a long afternoon when Corey Patterson comes up to bat. I start screaming at Corey. “Get a hit!’, “Lay off the curve!’, “Your shoe’s untied!” Before I can get another comment out, Corey rips a single into right. As he’s running down the line toward first I see him look over at me and he gives me the “take that” look. Just then, he starts to stumble and takes a fall. Unfortunately he blew out his knee and has never been the same.
Over the years since, I have always wondered two things. Why didn’t Corey listen to me about his shoelace? And what ever happened to the guy that bought my jersey? I think I will sleep well tonight.

Corey Patterson Homerun!!!!
that hit just added atleast 100-150 more in FAAB dollars. The guy can steal 30-40 bases easy. Can you say Rajai Davis!
Corey Patterson bids must be 200+ if you need SB.

He is in Baltimore hoping to catch a Griffey HR.

Lint,
Interesting coincidences in our stories from that weekend in '04!
I did the same thing with a Felix Pie jersey in '07 or '08. What did Stan the Man have to say about ole Felix!?!?
It should go without saying that I will treat Starlin's jersey like the head of Medusa since I am the jinx of all Cub "prospects"!

It’s late April ’07 and the Cubs are off to a slow start. Usually I try and sell my April and May tickets but for some reason I decided to keep this game against the Cardinals. I’m glad I did.
The weather that day was great for an April ballgame in Chicago, upper 60’s with a light breeze blowing to the right field corner. It’s a full house with 40,000+ in attendance. The Cubs play a great game and Felix Pie hits his first Major League HR to right-center.
I’m all happy after the game and decide to head over to the Cubby Bear for a little post game celebration. I’m having a couple of Old Styles at the bar when this guy a couple of stools away from me starts talking to me about the game. We’re having a good conversation when I notice that he is wearing a Corey Patterson jersey. I tell him how I think that Dusty Baker ruined Patterson but that unfortunately I think Felix Pie is going to have the same type of uneventful career.
The guy at the bar says no, “Patterson is a bum”. “I think Felix Pie is going to be the next Garry Maddox. Great speed, descent avg with 10-14 HR power and Gold Glove defense”.
Ok I say, “then why you wearing that Patterson jersey”. I myself had my Andre Dawson jersey on.
“Oh! It’s the only Cub jersey I have”
I tell him about my friend “Stan” and I tell this guy that if he pays with cash he can probably get a ‘deal’ on a Pie jersey. He thanks me for the info and we have a couple more beers before I leave. I don’t know if he ever bought that jersey from “Stan”, but I do know he had no luck with Cub prospects.

Ah Lint, time for me to lay down the Ace of trump!
Pie's first major league HR was in STL - April 27, 2007. I was at the game 6 rows behind the Cardinals dugout; still got the stub! Thought it'd be a 'keeper'!
I was living in Edwardsville, IL at the time and rarely missed a Cub game in the 'Lou for about 7 years down there!

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

When I was a sophomore in high school, I got Corey Patterson to sign a baseball for me back when he was with the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts. Thought I had my college tuition all locked up.
Sad to think that all these years later I couldn't get a 6-pack of PBR with it. Heck, I think I paid $10 for the ball -- joke's on me!
