As long as I've been a sports fan, it happens. You know, a Manager's spot opens up or a head football coaching job opens up, and the press rush to list the 'usual suspects' for the job.
What got me going is the Cubs job. I read a blurb that Eric Wedge, Bob Melvin, and Fredi Gonzalez are in the mix. Blah. Blah. Blah.
I'm sure these guys are all nice guys who know their baseball. These guys will knock on every door until one opens. The Cubs have had enough 'old school' with Piniella, haven't they?
Forget the interviews, just forget' em. Get the Cub fans excited (admittedly, an easy thing to do), and tell them that our man is ready to be the next Manager. Of course, that fellow is Ryne Sandberg.
What is the worse that can happen? The Cubs lose?
If anything, the hiring of Sandberg would make them even more of a loveable loser. And nobody in sports has made more from losing, and not winning, than the Cubs.
The Cubs can win with Wedge, Melvin, and Gonzalez. Sure. But they can do both win or lose with Sandberg and both would be acceptable...at least for a few years.

There is no truth to the rumor that after Francisco Rodriquez knocked out his girl friend's dads tooth that he texted her and said, "That doesn't count, he has false teeth."

40 man rosters really water down the stats over the last five weeks. Heck, with 'rests' and six man rotations, twice a week starters are even tougher to come by. Veterans on non-contending teams seemingly need more time for a boo-boo. Rookies, starved to show are eager to take their time.
Also with no dl, information on injuries become more sketchy. All combine, somehow, to make September a tougher month in which to hold a fantasy lead as well as catch the leaders.

I’ll take Sandberg.
He’s not up there with Banks or Santo or Williams yet, but the guy is an icon with the Cubs and the fans will give him every opportunity to succeed. And if he can somehow get the Cubs into the WS in the next few years, he will forever be a legend in Chicago.
Just look at Mike Ditka, he was a good ex-Bear that fans liked. After winning the SuperBowl he became a legend and has been living off that ’85 season ever since.
Good Luck the last 3 weeks………………

Agreed.
The Cubs job is unlike those in other cities. The personality in the dugout becomes a virtual characature (sp) of himself.
If Sandberg wins, it's great.
If he loses, that's ok.
The others are unable to break from the pact, or Sandberg, based on past performance.
A stodgy Wedge, etc will be hard for Cub fans to take. Sandberg personifies hope for Cubs fans. Hendry is already losing a grip on his job. If he becomes 'the man that passes on Ryno' his days will be numbered.
Good luck to you over the last three weeks. September can wreak havoc on lineups.
