Y'all remember Mark Reynolds, right?
Strapping guy.
Plays third base for the Diamondbacks.
Keep that thought.
If you've ever heard John Sterling broadcast a Yankee game, you know that it seems every move on the field is magnified to the nth degree.
Sterling has these pet calls of his when the Yankees hit a home run.
For example, "THAT'S AN A-BOMB BY A-ROD!!!"
I was thinking it would be cool for Reynolds to be traded to the Yankees. We could be hearing this:
" THAT WAS A REYNOLDS (W)RAP!!!"
Sorry, got off track.
Anyway I am a conossieure (woo hoo, I can't believe spell check wasn't all over me!) of strange baseball records.
There are rumblings that Reynolds will not play anymore this season.
If so, Reynolds ends his season at .199. Probably the only time in history that a NFBC 2-3 rounder finished below the Mendoza line over the course of a full year without major injury.
To add insult to injury, he also finishes as the first man in baseball history to have strikeouts that totaled more than his batting average, 206.
Dave Kingman has nothing on Mark Reynolds.
Of course, striking out is nothing new to Reynolds, in fact, he has less this year, than last, 223.
It's just that striking out a lot is more palletable when you're hitting 44 bombs.
Shandler was right in his assessment of Reynolds.
'Concerns about batting average. Slides in ct%, ld% create dangerous downside if power goes from superhuman back to merely elite.'
At the same time, he had him as a third rounder and the sixth third baseman off the board, like many of us.
Sometimes, we just don't listen to our own advice.
For those that believe in the 'Age 27 philosophy', Reynolds was a year early.
Reynolds leads the Diamondbacks with 32 home runs. Still, his rbi is only third best on his own team. He is the Jesse Hester of baseball. He'll hit the long ones and make highlight reels, but have a string of games, dormant.
In 2011, he'll be taken by teams desparate for power. Dan Uggla and Adam Dunn, two other like power sources will pass him by and have their names called before his.
Other factors come into play for Reynolds next year.
The Diamondbacks are rumored to be paring payroll, which could make for a weaker hitting lineup around him.
Also, Diamondback Management is determined to introduce 'humidored' baseballs to Arizona.
I'm a sucker for the underdog, but this dog may not hunt.
He makes life a Hell for owners at times.
Watching a game live or following on the internet, you'll see him come up with the bases loaded and less than two out, only to see the inevitable whiff.
Reynolds adp falls to the sixth round next year. Mostly by teams who need the homers and can take a major batting average hit.
Sometimes, we wish we could take two players with our one pick. We do with Reynolds.
Unfortunately, that other player is Mario Mendoza.
And that is a Reynolds wrap.
Note- Each week, leading up to the draft of 2011, I'll pick a player, review him, and give an opinion about his play and where he'll slot in next year's draft.

On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

And you were kind in not addressing the reduction of his SB this year.
