Who Deserves To Be In The Inaugural Class Of NFBC Hall of Fame?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:48 am

As I mentioned during the season, I think we now have seven years of results and performances from the NFBC and it's time to open our NFBC Hall of Fame. We'll create an online version of our hallowed Hall and open the doors after our induction ceremonies in late March. But first we have to decide who deserves this honor.

I agree that the inaugural class has to be special, likely has to be limited to the very special few who have excelled over seven years of the best competition in the industry. And I even think it has to include players who we all think will continue to excel in the future. After all, this is a unique Hall of Fame that inducts players during their prime playing years, not at the end of their careers. So these owners must be worthy of the honor today and in future years when folks compete against them.

The criteria I put on the Hall of Fame page included:

* Excellence through time in the NFBC main event.

* Consistency through time in the NFBC main event.

* Winning titles in the NFBC.

* Winning prize money in the NFBC.

* Excellence in several NFBC formats; consistency in multiple formats.

We have a complete history of performances from every player in every year in every contest, so we should be able to evaluate owners with their stats rather easily. The process I'd like to use is to narrow the list down to a select few with input from all NFBC players and then list those accomplishments and make a final decision. The process with include input from the players, Fanball members and of course Tom and myself.

We're not going to make this an overly political process and hopefully the data is so overwhelming that folks won't disagree with the decision. But at the end, I believe the selections should come from the NFBC: mainly Tom, myself and Fanball. It can get too political any other way, but all feedback will be taken into consideration.

My goal is to honor the Hall of Fame members on Draft Day in the various cities, award plaques to those honorees and to create an online Hall of Fame that folks can tour and see the accomplishments and history of the NFBC. We'll add to this list each year if selections warrant it, but there's not a guarantee that we'll add people each year. The honor has to be earned on the playing field. Some years we may have multiple additions and in other years we may not have any additions. The players will make those decisions for us.

So with all of that laid out, who is deserving of being inducted in the inaugural class? You tell us. Let the fun begin and I have a feeling this won't be very hard. ;) Thanks all.

Who Deserves To Be In The Inaugural Class Of NFBC Hall of Fame?

Post by Glenneration X » Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:54 am

I haven't been here as long as most, only two years.

Still, in those two years the names I always hear in any discussion of the best of the best always include Childs, Jupinka, & Srebro. There are others that slip in and out of the conversation, but these three are in every single one.

They're the Ruth, Wagner, & Cobb of the NFBC (I'll give you one guess who's Cobb ), and any inaugural class should include these three.

Now that the obvious have been mentioned, I'll leave it to others with more history here to discuss any other worthy candidates.

NFBC Main Event Lifetime Rankings: 2004-2010

1 Stephen Jupinka 374

2 Shawn Childs 327

3 Mark Srebro 310

The list above makes it clear to me. Before this season I would not have put Mark in a HOF group. But he shot up the ranks with a very strong main event finish, and after seeing here that he finished in the money in 13/14 leagues, I think he joins the elite. In addition to their main event accomplishments, each of these guys have won a lot of titles in satellites and other live events. These 3 would get my vote. ;)

STEVE .................. MARK ................... SHAWN

Are we required to only choose 3?

My top 10, which also includes some admittedly subjective "points" for general contributions to the betterment of the contest, in no particular order:

Shawn Childs

Steve Jupinka

Mark Srebro

Rick Thomas

Terry Haney

Lindy Hinkleman

Ken Magner

Dan Kenyon

Greg Morgan

My opinion is that it is still a little early to have a Hall of Fame list. Ten years would be a good starting point.

As stated before, any first class without Greg Ambrosius is just silly. C'mon!

Without him, we may not even know who Steve Jupinka or Shawn Childs is.

Greg has created the greatest of fantasy contests. He has followed that up with giving first class customer service.

Maybe, we're taking Greg for granted. If Shawn or Steve, or I, or Mark, or even Walla Walla were to leave this contest, there would be little fanfare. Greg leaving, would change the dynamics on every level.

Some will argue that this is a 'Players' Hall of Fame. To them, I say without Greg, there are no players.

If a Hall of Fame has to be established after seven years, fine.

But, don't leave out the most instrumental figure in the NFBC.

I dont think that you can leave Mr. Hinkelman off of the HOF list. Even if he never wins another $125 league, he accomplished something that will probably never be done again. Guys in my home league, who could not care less about the NFBC, refer to "that pig farmer" and his accomplishment of 2009.

This is the critera for the Poker Hall of Fame.

The criteria for being in the hall are simple. (a) A player must have played against top competition. (b) Player for high stakes. (c) Played consistently well, gaining the respect of their peers. (d) Stood the test of time. (e) Contributed to the overall growth and success to the game of poker.

Who Deserves To Be In The Inaugural Class Of NFBC Hall of Fame?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Oct 20, 2010 3:33 am

Okay, today I'm going to present the historical facts for our NFBC Hall of Fame candidates. With our new setup under MY TEAMS, it's very easy for me to look up past history of every player and put it out there for all of our die-hard viewers to see. I think this is the best way to make a smart decision when it comes to our inaugural Hall of Fame class.

I'll post the results here and you can comment all you want on their credentials. I'll then create a separate thread once I'm all done with the data for all of the NFBC candidates and maybe even set up a voting procedure. I think the facts will speak for themselves, but you never know.

And at some point, maybe even as early as January, we'll announce our results and come up with a process for honoring our inaugural NFBC Hall of Fame class. I want this to be fun and a goal for others to achieve. We have seven years of data and I think the evidence will sway us one way or the other on whether this makes sense to do this or not. I think you'll see that some candidates are worthy whether we vote them in after Year 7 or after Year 10. They are that worthy.

First up is our 2010 NFBC overall champion, Stephen Jupinka. The data will be posted next.

STEPHEN JUPINKA

NFBC FACTS

Entered: 33 leagues since 2004

Won: 14 league titles (42.4%)

2nd: 3 times (51.5% in Top 2)

3rd: 4 (63.6% in money)

4th: 4

5th: 3

6th: 1

7th: 1 (30 of 33 times he's in top half)

Other finishes: 9, 13, 14

Main Events: 8

1st: 4 (NFBC record)

2nd: 1

3rd: 1 (cashed 75%)

4th: 1

5th: 1

In the overall standings, he is our Lifetime Standings leader, having placed 10th, 18th, 35th, 54th, 2nd, 33rd, 1st and 94th.

My records might be off slightly, but Steve has spent approximately $46,000 in NFBC entry fees and has won just over $170,000.

Steve has also won money in just about every different format. He has won:

Main Events

$500 Satellite Leagues (4)

$325 Slow Drafts (3)

12-team Online Championships (1)

Invitationals (KJ Duke)

He finished second in the debut NFBC Auction Championship.

His Achilles heel might be the Ultimate League! :D He has competed in four Ultimate Leagues and finished 3rd, 5th, 13th and 14th. Don't ask me why, but that's been his lone failure.

Interestingly, it's fun to see how few leagues we actually offered our top players before the past few years. Here's Steve's resume in the NFBC:

2004: 1st Main Event, 1st $500 Mid-Season

2005: 1st Main Event

2006: 2nd Main Event, 3rd Ultimate, 5th $500 Sat

2007: 5th Main Event, 1st $500, 7th $500, 3rd Ultimate, 5th Ultimate Auction

2008: 1st Main Event, 1st $500, 1st $500, 14th Ultimate

2009: 3rd Main Event, 1st $325 Slow, 4th $500 DC, 1st KJ Duke, 9th $1,000 Sat, 1st Online Championship, 13th Ultimate, 1st $250

2010: 1st Main Event, 3rd Super, 4th Main Event, 2nd Auction, 6th Live Double Play, 1st $325 Slow, 1st $325 Slow, 4th $325 Slow, 2nd $125 Sat, 4th $125 Sat.

Is this person Hall of Fame ready? Are these the type of credentials that warrant a spot in the inaugural NFBC Hall of Fame? Winning over 42 percent of your leagues and cashing in over 63 percent of your entries? You be the judge.

11 of 226 people didn’t vote for Babe Ruth to enter the HOF

23 voters didn’t think Stan Musial was worthy of the HOF……………..

There will always be someone that thinks a particular individual is not deserving of an honor, but if the numbers that Stephen Jupinka has put up aren’t worthy of the NBFC HOF, then there shouldn’t be an NFBC HOF.

Hmmmm....this is a tough one. Has he really accomplished that much? I've got to tell you I'm on the fence.

In all seriousness, no-brainer. If Steve's doesn't qualify, who does?

3rd: 4 (48.1% in money)

6th: 3

7th: 1 (40 of 52 or 76.9% in top half)

Other finishes: 8th (3), 9th (1), 10th (2), 11th (3), 12th (2), 13th (1).

Main Events: 8

1st: 4 (NFBC record)

2nd: 1

3rd: 1 (cashed 62.5%)

5th: 1

7th: 1

8th: 1

In the overall standings, he is the only person to finish in the Top 5 FOUR TIMES. He has finished 3rd, 5th, 102nd, 3rd, 58th, 3rd, 154th and 214th.

My records might be off slightly, but Shawn has spent approximately $68,500 in NFBC entry fees and has won just over $120,000.

Shawn has also won money in just about every different format. He has won:

Main Events (4)

$1,250 AL Auction Leagues (2)

$1,250 NL Auction League (1)

$1,000 Satellite

Invitational (Shawn Childs League)

$325 Slow Drafts (won free entry in 2009)

He has finished second in the Ultimate League twice, 2nd in the AL Auction League twice on top of his two AL titles, and in 2009 he had three second place Online Championship finishes in that 12-team concept.

He will admit that this wasn't his best NFBC season as he finished the lowest ever in the Main Event, placing 7th and 8th in his Las Vegas leagues and 154th and 214th overall. But in the six previous seasons, Shawn won four of six league titles and finished second one other year. And his four Top 5 overall finishes are unprecedented.

Here's Shawn's resume in the NFBC:

2004: 1st Main Event, 1st AL Auction

2005: 1st Main Event, 4th AL Auction, 6th NL Auction, 3rd Mid-Season Sat

2006: 5th Main Event, 1st $1,000 Sat, 3rd Magazine League, 11th $1,000 Mid-Sat, 1st NL Auction, 3rd AL Auction, 2nd Ultimate

2008: 2nd Main Event, 2nd Ultimate, 12th $500 DC, 4th AL Auction, 13th NL Auction, 5th Childs League

2009: 1st Main Event, 2nd Online Championship, 2nd Online Championship, 2nd Online Championship, 4th Online Championship, 2nd $325 Slow, 4th $500 DC, 1st Childs League, 11th Ultimate, 10th KJ Duke, 1st AL Auction, 5th NL Auction, 8th $325 Slow

2010: 7th Main Event, 8th Main, 10th $325 Slow, 2nd Childs League, 5th Diamond, 2nd AL Auction, 2nd Auction Championship, 4th Online DP, 3rd Live DP, 5th Live DP, 4th Live DP

Is this person Hall of Fame ready? Are these the type of credentials that warrant a spot in the inaugural NFBC Hall of Fame? You be the judge.

MARK SREBRO

NFBC FACTS

Entered: 32 leagues since 2004

Won: 11 league titles (34.4%)

2nd: 6 times (53.1% in Top 2)

3rd: 4 (65.6% in money)

4th: 2

5th: 3

6th: 1

7th: 2 (29 of 33 or 87.9% in top half)

Other finishes: 8th, 9th, 13th.

Main Events: 8

1st: 4 (NFBC record)

2nd: 0

3rd: 1 (cashed 62.5%)

5th: 1

8th: 1

9th: 1

In the overall standings, he has finished in the Top 6 three times and in the Top 15 four times. This past season he was the only NFBC owner to win two Main Event titles (winning in Atlantic City and in New York on following weekends) and he finished 2nd overall and 15th overall. He has finished 93rd, 74th, 106th, 5th, 6th, 96th, 2nd and 15th.

Interestingly, his best finish during the first three seasons of the NFBC was a fifth place, but during the last four seasons he's been highly successful. His first Main Event league title came in 2007, but since 2008 he has won 10 league titles out of 26 leagues and last year he cashed in 13 of 14 events he entered and won six league titles.

My records might be off slightly, but Mark has spent approximately $24,000 in NFBC entry fees and has won just over $62,000.

Mark has also won titles in a couple of different formats. He has won:

Main Events (4)

$1,300 Mixed Auction Leagues (2)

$250 Satellite League (1)

$125 Slow Draft, Draft Champions (4)

He has finished second in the $1,300 Mixed Auction League, third in the Main Event and third in the 12-team Live Double Play. He has entered two Supers and finished 5th and 13th

Here's Mark's resume in the NFBC:

2004: 9th Main Event

2005: 5th Main Event, 7th Mixed Auction

2006: 8th Main Event

2007: 1st Main, 7th Mixed Auction

2008: 1st Main Event, 3rd $250 Sat, 1st $250 Sat, 6th $250 Sat, 13th Super

2009: 3rd Main Event, 1st Online Championship, 5th Online, 4th Online, 2nd $125 Slow, 4th $125 Slow, 5th Super, 1st $1300 Mixed Auction

2010: 1st Main Event, 1st Main, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 2nd $1,300 Auction, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 3rd Slow, 1st Live Double Play, 3rd Live Double Play

2 quick thoughts:

No disrespect to Shawn or Mark b/c they are elite players and pals of mine.

1) Seeing Jupinka's numbers against the mind boggling record of Childs just left me all the more impressed. How do you dwarf Child's records?

2) I hope Mark turns the "I am the best" antics down this offseason and preseason. It was funny when you were mediocre. It cannot play so easily when you are what you now are. One of the best in the world at our little hobby. I also get bothered a bit when Mark gets labeled as a grinder. Sure, he works really hard in season. He also has a great read on player evaluation and remembers everything. Funny story somewhere in or around 2007 he PM's me and asks my opinion on if he should go big in FAAB on Fred Lewis. I encourage him to do so and explain why I love his upside. Keep in mind Mark PM's with everyone and he and I alone PM on a pretty regular basis and talk about a lot of things. Fast forward to the 2009 super league draft. Fred Lewis was a lot of our favorite breakout candidates in 2009. Mark takes him 2 picks before me right before a break. Over the phone at the break he says I knew I could not get Lewis past you one more time b/c you love him Chest. I just laughed and said well played.

Another thing to watch with Mark is the backside of his pitching staffs. He almost always gets "lucky" and has solid 5-7 starters in round 18 or after. To me that is more impressive than nailing Carlos Gonzalez.

The bottom line is 3 very good players who all do it a different way. Congrats on even being considered for this accomplishment.

haven't been around for as long as most but based strictly on results Jupinka and Childs are sure fire HOFers based on 7 years of winning leagues and placing highly overall.

in comparison Sebro has a 3 year tack record of winning leagues and placing highly overall so in my mind he'd be on the ballot again next year and the year after . maybe Sebro's record will look better when compared to any resumes Greg posts in the future. for now i like a 5 year period of winning without 1st overall finishes.

if the guidelines for the HOF arent as strict as 5 years winning etc. then i think it'd be fun if a place in the HOF wasnt guaranteed for life (since everyone is still playing anyways). if you struggle for a few years you are relegated! all in good fun.

TERRY HANEY

NFBC FACTS

Entered: 30 leagues since 2004

Won: 3 league titles (10%)

2nd: 5 times (26.6% in Top 2)

3rd: 3 (36.6% in money)

4th: 3

5th: 1

6th: 1

7th: 2 (18 of 30 or 60% in top half)

Other finishes: 8th (2), 9th (3), 10th (1), 11th (4), 13th, 15th.

Main Events: 7

1st: 2

2nd: 0

3rd: 0 (cashed 2 of 7 or 28.6%)

Others: 4th, 4th, 6th, 7th, 10th

Terry won the NFBC overall title in 2007 and finished fourth overall in our debut season of 2004. He finished 26th overall in 2009 when unfortunately he finished fourth in his league. His overall finishes include: 4, 176, 125, 1, 285, 26 and 61. He won the first two live events he participated in with the NFBC in 2004: His Main Event and the $1,250 NL Auction League.

My records might be off slightly, but Terry has spent approximately $42,000 in NFBC entry fees and has won just over $125,000. Winning the overall title will certainly help those numbers, but that's impressive nonetheless.

Terry has five runner-up finishes to go with his three league titles, including a second place in a pair of 12-team Online Championships. He also has a third place finish in the Ultimate Auction League.

Who Deserves To Be In The Inaugural Class Of NFBC Hall of Fame?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Oct 20, 2010 11:00 am

DAVID DIDONATO

NFBC FACTS

Entered: 15 leagues since 2005

Won: 4 league titles (33.3%)

2nd: 1 times (51.5% in Top 2)

3rd: 3 (53.3% in money)

4th: 2

5th: 1

6th: 1

7th: 2 (14 of 15 or 93.3% in top half)

Other finishes: 8th

Main Events: 6

1st: 2

2nd: 0

3rd: 1 (cashed 50%)

4th: 2

7th: 1

David won the $100,000 grand prize during his second year in the NFBC (2006) and has four Top 70 finishes. He has finished 70th, 1st, 64th, 97th, 157th and 65th.

But David is our second leading money winner in the NFBC thanks to his overall title and his dominance in the very high-stakes private leagues. He is the only NFBC owner to win two Ultimate Draft Leagues and he finished third in two other Ultimates. He also finished second last year in the debut NFBC Diamond League. Although he has competed in only 15 NFBC events to date, he has won four and has one of the very best cost/winnings ratios in the NFBC.

My records might be off slightly, but David has spent approximately $44,000 in NFBC entry fees and has won $240,750.

Here's David's resume in the NFBC:

2005: 3rd Main Event, 1st Ultimate

2006: 1st Main Event, 3rd Ultimate

2007: 1st Main, 3rd Ultimate

2008: 4th Main Event, 1st Ultimate

2009: 7th Main Event, 6th Online Championship, 5th Ultimate, 8th $250 Sat

2010: 4th Main Event, 2nd Diamond, 7th Live Double Play

Greg, the truth of the matter is if you're going to have a Hall of Fame, you can't go wrong with any of the six you listed here.

By listing their accomplishments, you've shown how each is worthy. Nicely done.

For each of you when you make the HOF, congrats & well deserved.

2005: 5th Main Event, 15th Mid-Season Auction, 7th Mixed Auction

2006: 8th Main Event

2007: 1st Main, 7th Mixed Auction

2008: 1st Main Event, 3rd $250 Sat, 1st $250 Sat, 6th $250 Sat, 13th Super

2009: 3rd Main Event, 1st Online Championship, 5th Online, 4th Online, 2nd $125 Slow, 4th $125 Slow, 5th Super, 1st $1300 Mixed Auction

2010: 1st Main Event, 1st Main, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 1st $125 Slow, 2nd $1,300 Auction, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 2nd Slow, 3rd Slow, 1st Live Double Play, 3rd Live Double Play

Is this person Hall of Fame ready? Are these the type of credentials that warrant a spot in the inaugural NFBC Hall of Fame? You be the judge. Pretty close to being accurate. I just looked at all of my leagues over the years at Fanball. One league that I did not participate in was the Mid-Season Auction League in 2005. You have me down for a 15th finish in that one. If you remember, that was the auction that had all kinds of problems (the same players being able to bid on multiple times, interface freezing up, etc..). I and other bailed on the auction and never got a team nor did we run the team. I hope you can remove that team from my resume as I didn't pay for it and had nothing to do with it.

Total tally for me should be:

33 total leagues.

1st: 12 league titles (36.4%)

2nd: 6 times (54.5% in top 2)

3rd: 4 (66.7% in top 3)

4th: 2

5th: 3

6th: 1

7th: 2 (30 of 33 or 90.9% in top half)

8th: 1

9th: 1

10th: 0

11th: 0

12th: 0

13th: 1

14th: 0

15th: 0

And to think, I didn't have any money finishes (0-4) until 2007
