Man, Woman, and Baseball

You know how in those chick flicks, a woman will dreamily look into a man's eyes and ask what he is thinking?

Now, you and I both know what the man is thinking, but in order to get where the man is thinking, he has to play the womans game and say something the woman wants to hear.

I don't miss that part of the man-woman game.

My wife and I have been married for 35 years. She knew about my obsession with baseball before marrying me. Poor girl. The game has changed. For the most part, she already knows what I'm thinking. Or, at least the subject matter.

For all those thinking sex. C'mon get your mind out of the gutter. Well at least momentarily.

Maybe you guys should take the Longoria test...

Would you rather have Eva Longoria waiting for you in bed or Evan Longoria in the second round of a draft?...No, wait, that doesn't work either, not even for me.

Let's just say, that sometime during your life, you'll think about other things more than sex....well, maybe.

ANYWAY, my wife usually doesn't ask me what I'm thinking, but last night made the fatal mistake.

Maybe she thought the Christmas season and visits from our daughters had brought my mind to the bosom of family. Away from the daily summer routine of endless ballgames. My reply?

"I'll tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking how stupid is fielders indifference? We're in the ninth inning of a blowout game and the pitcher and catcher are trying to combine to get three outs, right?

A runner on first base breaks and they let him go uncontested, UNCONTESTED! They are trying to get an out, an out presents itself on the base paths and they just let him go. WHAT IS THE POINT!?

Is that baserunner too much of a bother? Really?

I'll bet the pitchers agent is screaming the same thing. Two singles and the pitchers ERA is 9.00 for his inning of work.

Does it really matter where the out comes from? Is it, somehow, not manly to throw out a runner as opposed to getting a batter? These guys go deer hunting during the off season and shoot Bambi for crissakes, and they can't throw down to get a runner who is in their crosshairs?! An out is an out is an out, right?"

I looked at my wife for maybe a 'right on'...none

Maybe a nod in agreement...none

She just looked at me and said,

" Wife's indifference."

Tony Parker, apparently opted for Evan this year, after drafting Eva in previous years. In a quote, he stated:

"I just felt that 3b was a bit thin this year and wanted to firm up the position early. Eva is great but I felt like I could get her numbers later in the draft"

The Longoria test is a good test.

For slo drafts, even the $1000 draft, Eva would get a lion's share of the attention.

For Main's, Super's, and Diamond's, Fantasy players could be swayed by the wallet in their back pocket, more than the little fella next to the front pocket.

I know that you know this.But...The advantage to the pitcher is the fact that the fielders are not holding the runner on.They play at regular fielding positions and do not cover the base when he breaks.So you have a good chance to get the groundball out.Like I said you knew that.

I would like to know why if you score a runner from third on a fly ball it is a sac.Score him with a grounder you get charged an at bat.

Maybe it is my advancing age and hard CPA heart, but I would choose Evan...even in the real world in the long run he would be MUCH, MUCH cheaper to keep....

I did know, Dave. But, have always thought it an excuse, not a reason. If that were the case, they would play the same way for the first eight innings, but I do know where you're coming from.

As for the sacrifice fly, in a way you bring up fielders indifference's cousin. An at bat is not charged on a sac fly to a hitter because of the good that it does for his team and because the defense is helpless to prevent the run. But, a plate appearance is given to the hitter to worsen his on base percentage.

A ground ball scoring a run brings us back to the fielder's indifference, if the infield was playing back, they were, for all intents and purposes, letting the offense score the run. Thus the at bat.

I could be wrong or changes could have been made since, but this was the way it was put to me by a man respected long ago when I questioned the scoring.

Never watched any shows with Eva, but I prefer the similar-looking girl from "The League".

Since she's in a fantasy sports show, maybe she could make a guest appearance at the NFBC:) ... Greg ???

Well, I can tell you that it isn't because of the cool acronym. Daniel Okrent is the originator of WHIP. It's a statistic made up by him expressly for fantasy baseball.

When starting his brain child, WHIP was called 'IPRAT' or Innings Pitched Ratio. It was changed to WHIP later.

Back then, Okrent had to furnish the stats by combing the newspaper box scores daily. Walks and hits were convenient in that they were in the pitchers box. HBP were sometimes included at the bottom of the box score, sometimes not. Since it wasn't included all the time, it wouldn't have been fair to include it in the stat.

Should it be included today? Sure. All stats are known immediately now. In a perfect world, hbp would be included and maybe IBB would be excluded, but I like that some stats have their faults.
