Glenn,

Good job getting 27 and 26 days left in the same picture? I guess your Sunday will be too busy to come up with another one.

If not, I vote for my favorite player growing up, Billy Williams. And if you can find a picture of him in the on deck circle swinging at a loogie, I'll be impressed.

Countdown to the NFBC

Post by Glenneration X » Sun Feb 20, 2011 12:04 am

26 DAYS left for the "Experts" to decide if they will once again be throwing their hats into the ring against us, the rank & file NFBC "Experts". In the past, there have been seasons where "Experts" like Nate Kravitz, Ray Murphy, and Cory Schwartz have managed top 10 overall finishes. Others unfortunately may not have fared so well. :( Hope to still see you in NYC again this year Ron. Don't worry, supposedly there's little chance of Walla being there......

I sort of cheated today by using a number pictured on something other than a baseball jersey (probably won't be the last time ). So since some of those who have commented in and seem to be enjoying this thread are Cubs fans like Max, Russel, & Cooperstown, I thought I'd post a bonus pic accomodating Cooper's request for Billy Williams famously in the on-deck circle swinging at his own spit or gum. I mean after all, Cubs fans have had so little to be happy about the last 103 years. :( Alas, I couldn't find the picture. It just wasn't meant to be. However, all is not lost. I did find one picture of a Cub in the on-deck circle that I thought would bring back joyous memories to all of us. ;) Enjoy guys......

JOYOUS MEMORIES

That black cat sighting in Sept 1969 (at Shea I think), precipitated the end of what was a great Cubs season.

The Cubs had an 8 or 9 game lead when that black cat appeared, and then they kept losing and the Mets kept winning, and if your superstitious (what Cubs fan isn't) then you blamed it on that damn cat. And it wasn't just losing, but the way the games were lost. Dropped popups, pickoff throws to unmanned bases, errors and more errors.

Sorry Glenn, but not so joyous a memory.

That Cub on deck was Ron Santo.

Most people know that Santo died over the winter. I'm sure the Cubs will have some tribute to him on Opening Day and a statue will be going up outside of Wrigley later this summer (Aug I think)

[/QB]Low Blow Glen, Low Blow! However this could finally be the Cubs year... Lets here it gang!

“Go Cubs Go” Lyrics

By Chicago folk legend Steve Goodman.

—–

Baseball season’s underway

Well you better get ready for a brand new day

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today.

They’re singing …

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today.

They got the power, they got the speed

To be the best in the National League

Well this is the year and the Cubs are real

So come on down to Wrigley Field.

We’re singing now …

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today.

Baseball time is here again

You can catch it all on WGN

So stamp your feet and clap your hands

Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.

You’re singing now …

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today

Go, Cubs, go

Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say

The Cubs are gonna win today!

24 DAYS 'til we get to add to our resumes to determine who is the best amongst us.

Some accept their well deserved accolades quietly with humility and grace....

...others are a little more open in proclaiming they are "...the greatest of all time!"

RT, there's probably an even bigger "proclaimer" than Mikey the Mouth in our midsts (Of course, he has a bit more than a 3rd place finish on his resume). Don't ask who, I refuse to name names ;) .....

PS...Just having fun with you Mark, but was there any doubt you'd be back?

23 DAYS 'til we get to add to our resumes to determine who is the best amongst us. We all want that NFBC Main Event Overall Championship on our list of accomplishments. Not an easy task. Over the years, such renowned and universally respected players as Childs, Gekko, Doughy, RT, Dobies, Bedell & others (as well as a mediocre & barely tolerated player referred by some here as GlennX ) have put together great seasons where that Overall Championship seemed so close. However when all was said & done, each was left on the outside looking in at those who've won Championships.....

Perhaps this is the year Childs, Gekko, Doughy, RT, Dobies, Bedell, or some other great player gets to raise his arms in victory and add his name to the list of Rastelli, Oldenski, Didonato, Haney, Jurney, Hinkelman, and Jupinka who've won it all. Perhaps it will be some player who've yet to achieve success in this arena and finally puts it all together. Perhaps it will be some newcomer to the scene. Perhaps even, if all the stars align, it will be that mediocre player mentioned earlier... We start to find out in just 23 days.....

It's hard to believe, but three weeks from today March Madness begins!! WOW. Yes, for all of us heading to Las Vegas for the first weekend of NFBC drafts/auctions, 21 days from now we'll be gambling on 16 first round games. Heck, we'll have a couple of losses in the books from those early-elimination rounds now that the NCAA has expanded the field to 68 teams. Who's joining me at the Bellagio sportsbook for some friendly college basketball wagering?? :D

See ya there and let the countdown continue Glenn. GREAT JOB on this thread by the way. Very clever with the photos. Tom owes you beers in New York for this one.

About those beers, I'd say I owe you and Tom a few for getting our contest back on track. Tom, in 3 weeks I've got 1st round. Greg, you'll have to wait 'til I finally make it out to Vegas. Who know, maybe come football season.
