Move Miggy C down your draft board?
Local radio in Detroit reporting this morning that Cabrera, supposedly over his drinking issues, got a DUI late last night. When confronted by the officer, Cabrera yelled at the officer "Don't you know who I am?", and proceeded to drink from a bottle of scotch in front on him. Way to have your head in the game as you head down for Spring Training...

Do you think its safe for me to take him with the #12 overall pick today or should I wait to get him with my 2nd Round pick?
In all seriousness, its sad to see young guys like that suffer such stupid misteps, but thats how we all learn. Its also sad that these guys haven't figured out that "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM" doesn't work outside of the roped line at a night club!

Joke all you want, but if I have a top 5 pick, Miggy's not the "given" he was a week ago. The talent is undeniable, but this could prove a larger problem beneath the surface. Call it immaturity, incredibly poor judgment, or whatever else you want. Personally the term I use for drinking in front of a deputy who is questioning me for drunk driving is "insanity." This has been a lingering issue and to be charged with DUI so close to the season screams trouble. Do you think Pujols is out drinking and driving in preparation for the season?
This is the opposite of the NFL so we know he won't be punished by the league (is alcohol Cabrera's PED?), but until the root of the problem is addressed, this could cost Cabrera both time and/or performance in 11. The guy's not 18, he's almost 28 (allegedly)! He'll go in the first round of drafts, but most don't view the first round as the time to take chances. Great timing as the slow drafts were delayed just long enough for this to emerge. Greg, I expect a post on how far he falls in these 10 drafts! I wouldn't be surprised to see him land at Winston's #12 in a draft or two. Good luck!

I know I/we joke about it, but it really is a major concern. The last time he pulled this was the night before another HUGE game to get the Tigers in the playoffs if I remember right. Not good...

Last year he was off the booze the entire season and had another great year. This mis step assures he will be off it again. Better to get this out in the open and out of the way early. He doesn't report until Sunday. In the previous incident he was not charged with anything so there is no threat of major repercussions.
I'd love to see everyone drop him as far as possible.

"When an officer told Cabrera to get into his patrol vehicle, the five-time All-Star said "(Expletive) you." He also told the officer "do you know who I am?" and made reference to someone who wasn't at the scene, saying, "I’m going (expletive) kill him." Officers had to deliver "3-4 knee spikes" into Cabrera’s left thigh to get him to cooperate. Cabrera also "kept running out in the road with his hands up" and was described as "belligerent, cocky, combative and argumentative" in the police report. "

I'd love to see everyone drop him as far as possible. 1.) There's no way to know whether he was off the booze or not last year. There are plenty of functioning alcoholics in the world.
2.) The conclusion that this means he will stop drinking is unsupportable. It assumes he stopped in the first instance, and it assumes he has the ability to stop at all.
Regardless, I don't think I would drop him very far.

How well he is able to handle it midseason is anyone's guess, but I certainly think it's premature to call it water under the bridge.

Ok, I knew that was coming.
1. He was very visible in Detroit all of last year and it was the medias conclusion that he was not drinking. The season when he was drinking he was out and about and everyone knew what he was up to and he still performed. He got away with it until the incident at the end of the season. Huge blow to him and the team.
2. I conclude that he will quit again for the season because I believe he did it last season. It worked for him and he'll do it again. It appears the guy doesn't know how to go out and have a few beers.
He'll relapse again in the future. My money says it's not this season. I'm leaving him a very close number two on my board.

Wed. Morning:
Dombrowski: "Hello, St. Louis? We are willing to take Albert
Pujols off your hands and pay him what he wants. We think
he'll be great enough long enough to make the contract
reasonable. We'll give you Miguel Cabrera, but you have to
throw in someone like Colby Rasmus, who your manager hates,
since Miggy is signed through his prime to a deal you can
handle."
St. Louis: "Sounds good- it's a deal!"
Thursday Morning:
Dombrowski: "Hello, St. Louis? it's Dave Dombrowski, and we
are willing to take Albert Pujols off your hands for Miguel
Cabr....hello? Hello?"
St. Louis: "Sorry, you have the wrong number."

As I stated before, talent is NOT the issue. One report revealed that Cabrera said something along the lines of "you don't know anything about my problems!" when the officers were putting him in the car (sorry I'm too lazy to research the exact quote). This suggests that Cabrera was pushed into drinking by a personal issue. In the reports I have read he APPEARS to have been alone. Who gets that drunk alone? Did the Babe drink alone?
Maybe he has a love child on the way, maybe his wife is having an affair with his brother, maybe he contracted an STD. In any event, I think it's safe to assume a woman is the source of the issue!
Seriously though, Mantle and the Babe were notorious partiers but they obviously handled their vices relatively well. Is Cabrera just out partying or is he trying to drink a larger problem away? We may never know. How could we? My point was and continues to be that I would think twice before spending a top 5 pick on the possibility that something is hanging over him that will affect his focus and performance in 2011. If he's just a wild dude having a good time like a couple of Yankee greats, then great. How confident are you that's the case?

Funny stuff. Diagnosing his problems based on a short quote taken in who knows what context. I think his statements "suggest" that he is going to win he triple crown this year. Babe and Mantle didn't handle their vices any better. They just didn't have to deal with an amateur reporter on every corner with a cell phone/camera. Please pass on Miggy and I will gladly take him at #2 or later. The guy flat out rakes drunk or sober.

1)Stopped drinking and raked, or;
2)Kept drinking and raked!
Either way he rakes! Go Miggy! Go!

Things were different back in the day, right Bill?
The summer between high school and my first year of college, I had partied too much and was pulled over by a policeman. He looked at me and said, "Dan, how far away do you live?"
I told him about a mile. He told me to get in the passenger seat, while he re-parked his own police car. Then drove me home, while telling me that his team's softball game was the next Monday night and how he expected me to be there. Then walked the mile back to his own car.
I never forgot that kindness and played on his team as much as possible. He also 'forced' me to watch a drunk driving video that had me never drinking and driving again. In fact, soon after, I made the decision just to never drink again.

If you think Cabrera will outproduce Pujols because of his lineup or skills or whatever, fine. You're almost certainly wrong, but OK. But the argument that Pujols impending FA is what moves him behind Cabrera is nonsense.
