Today, Baseball Season Begins

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Mar 31, 2011 12:10 am

Today, baseball season begins.

There's no game like it.

Most games start and end with a clock, baseball has innings.

Most games have points, baseball has runs.

Most games have the ball scoring points, baseball has players scoring runs.

Most games have the ball on offense, baseball has the ball on defense.

Most games have a direct line to scoring, baseball takes a circuitous square route to score.

Baseball is innocence. Playing catch with dad. Looking at baseball cards. Little League. Revering players from the past, while marveling at players of the present.

Sheen, Kowalski, and Ghadaffi are names that can be brought up another day.

Today, it's Jeter, Pujols, or Halladay.

Today, baseball season begins.

For the last umpteen years, I've watched 'Field of Dreams' the morning of baseball season, and will again today.

Shoeless Joe, Moonlight Graham, and Terence Mann....bliss

The oration by James Earl Jones is classic baseball americana.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game; it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that was once good, and it could be again".

Today, baseball season begins.

People will show up at the game an hour and a half early, not to imbibe or tailgate. No, they will go early just to watch players practice. To hear the crack of the bat. And be happy.

People will pay too much for parking, food, and drink. And be happy.

People will endure the crisp spring air as our weather changes from winter to spring. And be happy.

Our fantasy season opens today as well. I have been drafting almost non-stop since the last pitch of the last regular season.

It's merely killed time till now.

Today, we start finding out who was right and who was wrong in regards to judging the talent on the field.

Today, begins a grueling six months of our players being injured,, replacing players on our rosters, and under performance.

Today, reality replaces projections.

Take a moment, and enjoy the time of the season.

It's been a long winter. Now, it's spring.

Today, baseball season begins.

.

There are very few days of the year that have a better feel about it than baseball's Opening Day. Enjoy it everyone.
