Nostalgic for the Giambi era

How fitting that it was Giambi with his 3hr 7rbi night that put the foot on the throat of the Year of the Pitcher II ! . Formerly at the forefront of the old roid mania. I don't know about you guys but I kind of miss the 7hr nights. The 16 hr 60/60 weeks. Back then your pitcher threw a great game it really mattered. Now 22ip 3er 0W's loses you points.

Crazy times at hand... crazy Giambi looks like Grandpa Moses up at the plate with that gray beard and yet he still hit three MONSTER home runs last night. He entered last night's game with three hits on the season and then adds 3 HRs and 7 RBIs one night after striking out to end the game. Amazing.

I agree with you Steve. Baseball needs an offensive jolt to spice the game back up. Is there any way we can let these hitters use "some" juice without the full Barry-load?

Give them just enough to make the baseball carry an extra 20 feet without expanding their hat size by 1 1/8th and shrinking their jewels by one-fourth.

If we can do that just for the hitters the game will be back to where we can enjoy some offense again.

Speaking of head size, is it just me or is Bartolo Colon's head the size of a watermelon these days????

Like Ryne (His MelonLand name was 'Rind') Sandberg, Melancon is looked down on by MelonLanders.

Both, ignoring the traditional MelonHeadwear for bright lights and big money.

MelonLanders await the day for these once hometown heroes to perform wearing the customary headwear that is attributed to MelonHeads.

Secretly, MelonLanders hope for more bad Melancon performances. Their hope being that instead of bags over fans heads at Minute Maid Park, melonHeads will be adorned.

Uh, not really, I just wanted to see if it was a kick typing that.

It isn't.

What is sad is that Giambi has more home runs (4) this week than a couple of my teams.

If the world ends today, Giambi will have more home runs over the last couple of days than any player in baseball.

Giambi is a funny cat when thinking about him historically. A former power hitting MVP, he has never led the league in home runs or rbi.

Playing at Yankee Stadium in 2003, a paradise for power lefties, Giambi led the league in ROAD home runs. He hit 29 on the road, 12 at home.

Last year was the first year he hadn't hit double digit homers since 1995!

Funny, I started this post in order to be a smartass to all the FAAB revvers and ends up a salute to Giambi.

Last year, I went to a Colorado Springs Sky Sox game while Giambi was down there.

I like getting to these games early so I can see both teams hit.

When Giambi wasn't taking batting practice, he was signing autographs. After the game (he homered) he stayed 45 minutes sitting on the dugout signing stuff for kids.

I don't know the man. But, he gets it now. He was the King of Colorado Springs and he fit the role perfectly that night.

And apparently, he is fitting as a role player for the Rockies.

Having witnessed the End of the Steroid Era first hand on Saturday night at Miller Park, I agree that we may need to look the other way as our heroes bulk up again. It's almost scary to think how many players must have been using during the previous 10-15 years when you see the miniscule offensive results today. I mean, it's as if few players can even get the ball out of the infield anymore. Saturday's game saw the Brewers and Rockies combine for 5 runs and 10 hits. Three runs were scored in the first inning and then we sat and watched 2 runs in the next eight innings. Sunday's win saw a total of 4 runs on 6 hits.

Now it was still a lot of fun and my kids had a blast watching the Saturday night crowd of Cheeseheads drinking more beer than a whale drinks water, but still the offense is non-existent. It's tough to get them as revved up for a Brewers' game as it is for a Packers' game when runs are nowhere to be found. And much of the weekend was like that across the league.

You wonder how long the owners see the decreased attendance numbers and the decreased number of runs and come up with a solution. I have to believe this gets addressed at some point because scoring is definitely way down with no end in sight.
